Lokomotiv Kuban - CSKA Moscow (77:84)

CSKA have a 40-3 lead in head-to-heads

  • Published:

Despite the disastrous ratio, Lokomotiv are getting closer to the Moscow team. Their games last season were real trench wars and one should not expect anything different today

Lokomotiv have been great in their debut season in the Euroleague. They got to round two without any problems and have somewhat ruined their standings only in the last games of the first phase. However, it doesn't matter too much as the real deal starts in Top 16 and the team from Krasnodar will be in the right mood there. It is possible that Pashutin timed the form for this part of the season like he did last season when Lokomotiv performed best when it mattered the most. This resulted in them winning the Eurocup and getting a place in the VTB finals.

Lokomotiv have played their last game in Spain as they were defeated by Laboral. This game had no meaning as both teams had secured the Euroleague Top 16 before that and it only decided the final ranking in the group. Lokomotiv controlled the result in the first half but suffered a major dip in for in the second (43-24 for Laboral)

- It was a difficult game as we expected when we cam here. We managed to play good defense and control the game in the first two periods but after half-time, we were unable to stop their pick-and-roll with Hamilton. We made some defensive errors, we lost the focus and the game and they put more pressure on our players with the ball - said Pashutin after the game and added what he expects from the rest of the competition:
- We have to focus more on defense for Top 16. All teams in that stage are very strong all though our group had strong teams, too. We have to be ready to play team defense, team offense as each game will be like the finals for us.

Lokomotiv surely see their chance for getting one of the first four spots in this group and the place in the quarter-finals which would be a huge success for the Krasnodar team. The first game is a huge clash against the CSKA.

- CSKA are very strong in all positions. Sonny Weems was very good at the end of regular time, while the tall players dominated the paint. We have to limit Krstić, Kaun and Hines and at the same time watch out for the perimeter players. We can play like a team - collectively in defense and be versatile in offense - said Pashutin in the game preview.

Unlike Lokomotiv, CSKA didn't rest in the last few days. They played a VTB League game at home against the Lithuanian Neptunas. An easy win for the Muscovites was expected but the game turned into a real drama which CSKA barely won. A great shooting performance by Neptunas  (total of 13/28 for 3-pointers) kept them in the game for 3/4 of the game four consecutive 3-pointers in the last period even got them a 71-65 lead.

CSKA were down until the very end but then after Šarakauskas missed a free throw and Weemeus scored with 4 seconds to go, they managed to get into overtime. Neptunas didn't have enough energy there, they were completely deflated and CSKA used that to get a convincing win (in terms of result).

- As expected, we needed a lot of time to get into the rhythm. However, the players needed to take a break around Christmas and we were ready for that risk. Neptunas did great and they have several tall players in their squad that stretched our defense due to danger from the perimeter and this was very tricky for us. The end game was difficult, we were very lucky that our opponents missed the free throw and allowed us to take the game into overtime. We made the right decisions in the crucial moments - said Messina after the game.

Neptunas are renowned as a three-pointer team with fast flow of the ball in offense and perimeter shots which they use to make up for the lack of height. These teams are always dangerous if they're in a good mood, tall Krstić and Kaun had many problems with the mobile Lithuanian centers that often brought them away from the paint. However, Messina's team cannot be happy with their number of rebounds as Neptunas dominated this segment (42-30, 15 in offense) despite the fact that none of their players are above 205 cm.

CSKA were one of the favorites to win the European title but judging by what they've shown in most games so far, they will not be able to achieve that. Messina has a great squad at his disposal but his team doesn't seem to play the way he wants them to. They often struggle against weaker teams and they get the wins due to great defense in crucial moments. Stronger teams like Barcelona and especially Fener, revealed all their weaknesses.

Their serious intentions start with this game and it's time CSKA pick up the level of their game. The group is somewhat easier than the other one in which all teams are relatively tied. In this one,  Partizan, Žalgiris and Bayern Munchen are slightly below the rest of the competition. This will also be the first Russian duel in Euroleague's history.

- It will be a very difficult and important game at the start of Top 16. We will face the team with good shooters, lots of talents, lead by coach Pashutin who was the Russian national team coach until recently. Defending the perimeter and pick-and-roll, and controlling the rebounds will be crucial for us to win - said Messina who will not be able to count on Kaun who got injured on their last training session and was left behind in Moscow.

- Lokomotiv are looking great this season, they kept the core after torturing us in the VTB finals. They are definitely one of the favorites in this group and I expect a difficult game in their arena. We've had our ups and downs but Top 16 is starting and we have to become more constant - said Teodosić.

Lokomotiv Kuban are CSKA's traditional customers. They only managed to break their run of 16 consecutive defaets against CSKA in last year's VTB League finals, but the Muscovites got the title with 3-1. Their overall head-to-head ratio is 40-3 for CSKA which is truly remarkable. CSKA have the game to handle Lokomotiv, they've shown that in the last preparatory game before the start of the season when they beat them  by 76-65 at the Gomelsky Cup.

We saw a strong game then and we can expect one today. All the games in the VTB League finals ended in low figures (137, 118 in Moscow, 127 and 113 in Krasnodar) and both games in the regular part of the season were also under 140 points. Today's game is very important as it is Euroleague round 2 and both teams want to start it a win. The fact that the teams in question are rivals should only contribute to the firm game.

We should see a battle for each point in this game. All their head-to-heads last season were very much under this margin, especially the games in Krasnodar. Lokomotiv had many problems at home against the defensively stronger teams this season. Maccabi, Panathinaikos and UNICS have left them under 60 points. They played a tough game in St. Petersbourg just like all three against Lietuvos. I expect things to be the same today. CSKA win the games through defense while their offense is everything but convincing. On Monday, they were below this margin in the regular time against the super-fast Neptunas and the Lithuanian team had a great three-point percentage. I expect a much tougher battle here, I wouldn't be surprised by a game with way under 130 points.
