Brazil - Croatia (3:1)

A win an imperative for Brazil, Croatia would be happy with a point

  • Published:

At the World Cup opening, Brazil have to justify the expectations of their fans. They will probably go to the next stage regardless of the outcome of today's game, but a blunder would certainly ruin the atmosphere. Croatia would be happy with a point

Both teams would probably be a lot happier if they had a different opponent at the start of the WC. The Brazilian hosts have the imperative to win and there were certainly some teams less renowned than Croatia that they could have gotten. On the other hand, despite very courteous statements about this being a dream come true, Croatia would probably prefer a weaker opponent which would allow them to get points more easily.

What do Brazil base their optimism on? We would say on quality rather than home court advantage. In fact, the latter could be very counter-productive considering the public pressure. Their coach is a guarantee of quality, as are their starting 11 and the guys on the bench, even those great footballers that couldn't make it to the 23-man shortlist in Brazil.

Veteran Julio Cesar will be on goal while their four defenders could very well cover their midfield positions. In fact, Marcelo and Dani Alves are wing backs and spend a lot of time attacking while Thiago Silva and Davi Luiz often go up front and create the extra man in the final stages.

- We have to maintain the high rhythm of the game, that's what I will insist on in all games. There's an alternative for every player, even for Oscar. Willian and Ramires have no problems, while Hernanes can do his role up front. Fernandiho can take the control of our game at any moment - said Scolari before the game but he did criticize his team's reaction after set pieces:

- Goal from set pieces can decide games, especially those hard ones. And we are not organized enough from set pieces.

Even though there's no doubt that the Brazilian fans are only interested in their fans and their efficiency, Scoliari was a bit more studious:

- I expect us to be able to block Modrić and Rakitić and prevent their creation of chances. The game against Serbia was a good introduction for this today. They impressed me but they also answered my question about what to do with Croatia today. We must certainly not underestimate a team with players from Real Madrid, Bayern, Shakhtar...

A lot of their hopes in offense lie within Neymar. Even though he has a bit of an "up and down" form, he's capable of settling a game at every moment. Hulk will do his tasks on the left and Fred will wait for a chance when and if they get on.

Scolari has no injury problems, but there were truly many players who were hoping for a call-up but stayed at home. The list of absent players is officially empty.

Croatia didn't come to Sao Paulo to lose before they run out onto the pitch. Their coach Kovač has instilled enough confidence in them to go into the match confident of their success.

- We said we would do our best, it's up to the players now - said Kovač briefly.

It's clear that Croatia, like Brazil, will try to play a 4-2-3-1 system. Instead of suspended Mandžukić, they will use Jelavić from the start. Olić and Perišić are expected to be on the wings while the trio Kovačić-Modrić-Rakitić is one of the best in Europe. The only question is whether they managed to impose themselves in the game.

A problem for Croatia lies in the absence of a left-back. Strinić and Pranjić are not ready, Milić wasn't called up and they will experiment with Vrsaljko. He did a fairly good job as a right-back in Genoa, but the biggest challenges are to come today against Hulk. This might be a blessing in disguise for Croatia in the end as physically inferior Pranjić would have a hard time stopping Hulk.

- I think we can make use of Brazil's problems in defense. They conceded very few goals but I think we can do something with an intelligent performance. We will look for our chance - said Kovač. He has been practicing diagonal penetration in the the opposition's half for the past few days.

Many things would have to 'click' for Croatia to remain undefeated. One of those things is good refereeing, which will be in the hands of Nishimura. He's a relatively mild-mannered ref who has shown an average of 3.59 yellow cards in 91 international games.

If there is something Croatia can match Brazil, it's the quality of their midfield. Their Rakitić-Modrić-Kovačić triangle can surely match Gustavo, Paulinho and Oscar and Kovač has said a couple of times that he doesn't plan on parking the bus (as long as we have the ball, they can't score..).
This is not a typical Brazilian team with individuals like Ronaldinho and Rivaldo who dominated the opposition's half, even weaker teams have kept them at bay in friendlies and the scored from the distance, set pieces or quick one-twos. If a weakened Panama who struggled with fatigue in the second half managed to have 40% possession, I can't see why Croatia couldn't get at least 2% more. Even if they conceded 3-4 goals, which I doubt will be the case tonight.
