Spain - Chile (0:2)

Spain's attempt to reach the next round

  • Published:

Spain were very much humiliated by the Netherlands, and if they lose today as well, there's no chance they'd make it in the Round of 16

For a long time, no one has humiliated Spain as the Netherlands did in their World Cup finals opening game. The titles in the Spanish press the next day mostly read 'Humillacon' (humiliation), and that word is precisely what describes the game best. Spain got ahead as Alonso scored the opener (from a penalty), but everything after that was about the Netherlands, who had the chance to score more than the final five goals:

- We have to win against Chile. If we lose, we're going home for sure, and that would be a proper disaster for us - Fabregas said ahead of today's game.

Coach Vicente del Bosque talked about the changes he plans to make today:

- Of course there'll be changes, but I don't want to make any rash decisions. I don't want to single anyone out as the person responsible for the defeat. I have 23 players at my disposal and I'll find the best possible solution for Chile.

It seems like Casillas's place in the starting line up is secure, after what he described as his worst performance ever. The substitute goal keeper de Gea is injured, and won't be ready to play until after the group stage. Gerard Pique, on the other hand, was not as lucky as Casillas. It seems like he will be replaced by Javi Martinez today. There will be changes in midfield and offense as well, but we don't know which ones yet. It seems like David Silva might be one of the victims, while Diego Costa's status remains unknown. He might be a good solution against Chile since their defense is not top-level.

Chile were regarded as a possible surprise ahead of the tournament, and they've had a good start to it, result-wise. But, the game against Australia proved tougher than expected, and they had to fight for the points till the very end.

Unlike his colleague, Jorge Sampaoli probably won't make any significant changes to his team. The most important thing for him is Arturo Vidal's recovery from a knee surgery. Chile's coach hopes he'll be ready to play the whole game. Their two center backs from the first game, Gary Medel and Eugenio Mena, are quite short, and because of that struggled with some shots. There's a possibility that Francisco Silva makes it in the line up because of it, but it's still more likely that this center back duo keep their places.

Ever since Sampaoli took over at Chile, the team became offense oriented, and claim they won't give that up, not even against Spain:

- We want to attack, and try and pin the opponent down. We're in a good situation after getting three points from the first game, but we want to win the second game as well. We have a certain game style, and won't change it for anyone.

Spain and Chile met in the group stage in South Africa last year as well, Spain won back then 2-1. The teams did two friendly matches since that, Spain won the first one 3-2, while the second one ended as a 2-2 draw.

Chile are a team that cannot play defensive football even though a draw against Spain might be a decent result for them. But that's logical as they're a team with great forwards and a defense that consists of players only slightly taller than 171 cm, which gives their opponents lots of space, especially from set pieces, as showed by Australia in the first match.
On the the other hand, we have Spain who were humiliated in the first round and will simply have to go for the win here today and find a way to improve their goal difference. Vicente del Bosque will definitely make some changes, and there was even some talk about introducing two classic forwards, which is not often the case in Spain. In any case, there won't be any compromise on either end.
It's no wonder that the games between these two opponents always have plenty of goals and I expect the same today, regardless of the importance of the game. Chile will rely on their strongest weapon - offense, and I'm pretty sure a ball or two will land in Iker Casillas's net, especially after his not-so-convincing performance in the first game. But the Spaniards will also know how to make the best out of Chilean defensive problems and will probably score a goal or two, or even more. I will go for over 3 goals here, which means the stake is returned if the game ends with exactly 3 goals.
