Belgium - Algeria (2:1)

Belgium have to bring Halilhodzic's defense formation down first

  • Published:

Belgium are one of the favorites in the WC, but aren't given as much attention as some other teams. They are a very young and extremely talented team, but Algeria have something to hope for as well, even though they'd probably have to focus on stopping the Belgian offense

After a 12-year break, Belgium are back on the big stage with a team many already refer to as 'the golden generation'. But, we have to wait and see whether one of the youngest teams at this WC can prove just how good they are in Brazil. They did great in qualifications and managed to remain undefeated (only 2 draws in 10 games). They won all three preparation games ahead of the WC, two of those without conceding any goals.

Coach Marc Wilmots has put together a team that do well both in defense and in offense. They can attack continuously, but score after counter attacks and set pieces just as easily (8 out of 14 goals in the qualifying matches).

Their first rival in Group H are Algeria. An African team led by Vahid Halilodzic with a few young and talented players, whose time is yet to come, may be a tough nut to crack. That is precisely what Wilmots warned about at the press conference ahead of their meeting in Belo Horizonte today, well aware that the opening games at tournaments such as this one can be tricky and very demanding.

- How successful you'll turn out to be in World Cups is often decided by little things. We finally got here after 12 years, this is a big challenge for us, and my players are very impatient for us to start our campaign against Algeria. But, we have to be careful and always bear in mind the fact the team win the games, the individual very rarely - said Wilmots. He also took a trip down memory lane to remind us that Belgium got through the group stage in 1986 (reached semi final in the end) having recorded three different results.

- The team are at peace, we've been preparing in a great place, there's still no pressure, and I didn't notice any kind of anxiety with my players. People often talk about the lack of experience, but I think we built that into the team step by step, through our clubs and at tournaments. Just think about it, this group has been coming together ever since the Olympics. We still have a lot left to do, but we're very focused on what lies ahead, and we expect a win against Algeria - Belgium's captain Kompany said. Wilmots will stick to the usual 4-2-3-1 formation, but with Lukaku as the striker. He managed to recover in time, after getting injured in the last preparation match with Tunisia. All five players behind him will be either forwards or offense-oriented midfielders.

Algeria are opening their 4th WC campaign with a talented generation and a well-experienced expert as their leader. They are hoping for a miracle to get through the group stage for the first time ever. When it comes to WCs so far, they have that great win against West Germany in 1982, and a goalless draw with England in the last WC. Despite not scoring a single goal in the three matches in South Africa, the Algerians were not disappointed with their team.

Interestingly, Algeria have not scored a goal in the WC since June 3, 1986. They played a 1-1 draw with Ireland that day.

Ending that bad streak against Belgium is not going to be easy, especially because Halilhodzic's team will be very defensively oriented. They will try and stop the Belgian offense, but in spite of that, Algeria are not giving up hope.

- Belgium are the favorite, but the favorites don't always win - Halilhodzic said. His team will be in a 4-3-2-1 formation, and no one on his team is injured.

- We prepared for this game very well, we have analyzed Belgium thoroughly, and we're ready to start. Algeria are a young team trying to improve, we have noting to lose, we'll give our best so that we have no regrets afterwards. If we want to get past the group stage for the first time, we have to focus on three games. I have to convince my players not to be afraid of the fast and physically strong rivals, and that anything goes when it comes to football - Halilhodzic said.

- Belgium are always with 16 or 17 players who have been together for years. They often play the Champions League together and experience the top level football, unlike us. Hazard is their key player, we have to pay him special attention, but there's many other good things about their team. However, I managed to find some weak links we will try and take advantage of. There will be no surprises when it comes to their game, but stopping the kind of quality they have will be tough. Some say we'll be happy with a close defeat, but that is not true. They are the favorite, but we are counting on a miracle. Everyone in Algeria talks about that win against Germany in 1982, and that should lead my players on the pitch today - Halilhodzic said.

Belgium and Algeria met twice in friendly matches, Belgium won once, and the other game was a draw. Belgium won only one of their last nine WC games (3-2 against Russia in 2002).

A 40-year-old Mexican referee Rodriguez was appointed for this match. This is his fourth WC, his performances in the last Cups and other tournaments were good, he is capable of feeling the atmosphere on the pitch and adjusting to it. He has given 350 yellow, 51 red cards, and has awarded 29 penalty kicks in the 79 international games he has had so far.

One doesn't have to be an expert to compare players like Hazard, De Bruyne, Fellaini and Witsel with Bentaleb, Lacen i Feghouli. Belgium have the quality to compete with any team on this WC and in normal circumstances, they should dominate here by 15 % at least. Algeria are a good team and they will get much good results in the group, perhaps even in this game, better than what most people expect, but their assets are strong defense and fast transition and they often get low possession, even against weaker teams. Their rehearsals say a lot: Algeria beat Romania by 2-1 with possession of 39-61, Belgium beat Tunis by 1-0 with 59-41. And that was without Witsel and De Bruyne.
