CSKA Moscow - Panathinaikos (77:51)

Greek defense is looking to create another surprise

  • Published:

CSKA confirmed what was known before the start of the series in the first game - they are much better in the paint. But, Panathinaikos's defense managed to get the game in overtime, proving this series will not be easy for the Moscow team

Both quarter final games on Wednesday were settled in over time. The away team won in Milan, while CSKA won home for the first win in the series. They were doing better for the first twenty minutes (40-33), but the away team did better in the second half time, which gave them the chance to settle the game in overtime. Panathinaikos were four points up few minutes before the end, but Weems scored five consecutive points to get his team back in the game and Hines scored a few free throws for over time. Panathianikos managed to score only two points in over time.

- As you saw, it was a tough game. We opened both half times badly, but managed to pull ourselves together later on. We got nervous in the second half time and made our lives difficult. The great final part of the game got us in overtime, and it helped with the nervousness that was there the whole evening. We knew it would be a tough series, and we have to be ready for the second game - Messina said.

- It was a very tough game. We expected the opponent to be physically very powerful, and we knew winning won't be easy. We managed to get back in the end, they missed a few shots. We played a great team defense, and made a huge step towards the ultimate goal - Hines said. He was one of the key player of the game (15 points, 8 rebounds).

Weems was the top scorer (21 points). Besides him and Hines, Hrjapa did a lot for his team as well. He took initiative in the key moments, scored 17 points, and recorded 11 rebounds. That made him the most valuable player of the game.

- The game was tough as expected. The Top 16 experience taught us that the final standings don't determine teams' quality - they're all powerful. Even if you got into the play off as the best ranked team, and you're playing the team in position four, it doesn't mean you'll get in the Final Four for sure. Panathinaikos have been displaying a good quality game. I'm happy we were patient enough to get better and win.

CSKA's coach is well aware this game might be the crucial one. Travelling to Athens with a 2-0 record would be a huge thing - CSKA wouldn't have to win there, because even if they lose both games, the last one in Moscow would be the crucial one. However, playing in Athens with a 1-1 records would be a tough task to accomplish. That makes the game on Wednesday very important, and everyone at CSKA want the same outcome today.

- We have to fix what was not good, but we also have to keep the same approach, will, and fierceness. This will be a tough series, we have to take it one game at a time - Messina said.

CSKA were far from their best performances, especially their center duo Krstic-Kaun. They were the ones expected to make the difference in the key against the psychically inferior Panathinaikos' centers. But, they scored only six points combined. CSKA dominated the rebound thanks to Hrjap and Hines (19 rebounds combined) and that segment of the game will be one of the most important ones in this game.

- We need to forget the first game against Panathinaikos. I think every game will be different. I expect both team to be even tougher. We have to prepare for the game on Friday - Hines said.

As expected, Teodosic injury left CSKA a little thin in the point guard position. Jackson and Pargo scored sic points combined, and Jackson spent 33 minutes in the game! But, he did a great job in defense with others, Panathinaiko's back court were pretty limited, Diamantidis scored 10 points out of 12 attempts (2/10 for three pointers).

114 points were scored in the first three quarters on Wednesday, which was definitely not expected. However, there was a huge battle for every point in the last quarter and over time, and that is expect today as well. Only seven points were scored in the five minutes of overtime. The pace was pretty slow throughout the game, both teams recorded less than 60 shots. The attempts were often finished in the last seconds, but great efficiency in the first thirty minutes resulted in a field goal efficiency of more than 50% for both teams.

Today's game is extremely important, it can take the whole series down a certain road. We can expect what's been happening in over time of the last game from the start in this one. Both teams will have difficulty scoring over 70 points if that happens.

Panathinaikos put up a much greater fight in the first game than expected. They must really believe in getting through and they were obviously right to have said that CSKA suit them. The first game was a great opportunity, but the loss of focus and Weems secured the win for CSKA.

- It was a great game, we did very well, especially in second half time. Unfortunately, we lost focus in the key moments. We have to forget all about it and focus on the next game - coach Avlertis said.

How big an effect will such a horrific defeat have on the team - that is the question. But, Panathiaikos are one of the most experienced teams in Europe, they should be able to get over it quickly. More importantly, the defense realized they can cause a lot of trouble for the Moscow-based team. They limited the opponent to only 32 points in second halftime. It was very clear that Teodosic was greatly missed at CSKA. The tactics won't change much for this game:

- We have to do everything good we did in the first game. That's aggressive defense, and better efficiency in offense - Alvertis said.

His scorers Bramos, Curry, and Ukic, who scored only five points combined in the first game, should definitely do better today. Diamantidis performed badly as well, which leaves Panathianikos with a lot of improvements to do in offense.

- The offense has to do better. We missed a lot of attempts in the first game. Of course, the defense had to be tough as well - only that can help us win - Curry said.

Panathianikos will undoubtedly rely on defense again. That's the only way they can stand up to Russians, who were better in rebound in the first game, and who are also expected to be better at it today. Panathinaikos therefore have to hope the defense can limit the opponent to 60 points. Their scorers also have to do much better. But, if they managed to make it into over time in the first game with all those problems, they definitely stand a chance today.

I am opting for the same bet as I did a few days ago, even though it didn't prove successful. The first game only confirmed how good the bet was, and if the shooting percentage wasn't as good in the second and third periods, the game would have been limited to well under 140 points. However, the last quarter and the over time were just what I expect today. There was a great battle for every point, and besides, today's game might be the crucial one. The win would get CSKA inches away from the Final Four, while the win would give Panathinaikos a great chance to settle everything home. The pace in the first game was very slow, the shooting attempts would often happen after 20 seconds. Diamantidis will try and set the pace his team wants today, and CSKA turned out to be a much slower team with Jackson and without Teodosic. I think they would both struggle to score over 70 points, which would make this bet a good choice.
