Panathinaikos - CSKA Moscow (73:72)

Ukić: The final moments of the last game were like an NFL game

  • Published:

Ukić's statement clearly shows what kind of battle is on in this series. Both teams are doing great in defense and every attack is choked out. Everything points to a new battle in which every point will be hard to come by

Panathinaikos have shown once more they're a team of fighters. Even though CSKA crushed them in the second game, the Greeks did not give up and they played their classic game in their OAKA. A slow game, every defense a borderline foul, a fight for every possession - that's Panathinaikos's game. They reduced the mighty Russians to a total of 59 points, they have shown how to play in Athens and got a deserved win.

- Our performance in the second game was an insult to ourselves and we have to atone. Defense is what we do best and that's what we based on tonight and that's how we have to keep on going - said Maciulis after the game.

Defense was brilliant, but the most exciting element of Panathinaikos's game were their offensive rebounds. Even though they are physically inferior to CSKA, they had 10 rebounds more and this brought them the win. It was particularly important in the final stages when they had no solutions for CSKA's defense but their offensive rebounds kept them going.

- We are ready. We showed that we are ready yesterday. We saw that we can play against them and now we'll got to get this series back to Moscow. We need OAKA to be even more filled and we will drain that huge defensive energy which you saw on Monday from it - said the experienced center Batiste who didn't play much in this series as he can't match Kaun and Krstić.

But Lasme and Mavrokefalidis can match superbly and the away team's centers were practically invisible in the third game. However, to get the series back to Moscow, they will need to do much better in offense as PAO had some crazy luck with some of their three-pointers, including the one by Ukić who scored from 9 meters away at the end of the game. As usual, Ukić had a very graphic description of the game:

- I expect today' to be even more demanding than the third game and you saw that the end of the third game was more like NFL than basketball. These games are not pretty to watch but there's plenty of fighting spirit and we are surely in for a new tiring match.

PAO often kept the ball until the 24 seconds ran out and this attacking inertia has created a lot of problems for them. CSKA have a much more free-flowing game up front and one should be honest and admit the Greeks need a new miracle and a new brilliant defensive performance to get this into the fourth game. But coach Alvertis is convinced his team can do it.

- We know what our advantages are and we have to use them. We have to keep the game in our tempo and that's the only way we can win. Of course, it's important to improve our attacking performance but the key is to maintain the defense at this level.

If they manage to limit the Russians to 60 points once again, they will definitely have the chance, but the question is whether they can repeat that performance.

As was expected, Panathinaikos have shown a completely different performance in their arena than in the second game. They controlled the results from the start, they were up throughout the entire 40 minutes and they kept their cool when CSKA took the lead in the final stages (59-58) for the first and the last time in the game. Panathinaikos put them under pressure in defense, left them without a point in the last three minutes and Messina had nothing left to do but to congratulate his opponents.

- All credit to Panathinaikos, they deserved to win. We fought but we didn't have enough quality win. We suffered the same fate as Panathinaikos in the first game - we fought until the end, we took the lead but we started losing the balls. The result is 2-1 and we are preparing for the fourth game.

Weems was CSKA's best shooter in the third game as well but he couldn't dominate as he did in the first two games. Panathinaikos played a much better defense on him and even though he scored 14 points, he had 5/14 field goal. In terms of stats, Panathinaikos's domination in rebounds (35-26) stands out the most  and it's definitely no coincidence. Panathinaikos are carried by their fanatic fans in Athens and their willpower allows them to make up for their physical inferiority.

Krstić and Kaun have so far been unable to make use of their physical attributes as they only got 10 points between themselves in the third game and had 7 rebounds. Just to compare, Lasme alone had 13 points and 4 rebounds. Aaron Jackson was pretty indisposed as he didn't get a single point in 25 minutes (0/6 field goal) and so Pargo got a bit more playing time. Hrjapa was generally their playmaker as he had 8 assists and his absence would have make the job for the Russian team even harder.

The fact that both teams took a total of 100 shots (Panathinaikos 51, CSKA 49) shows just what kind of game this was. The rhythm was very slow, the attacks were built carefully, especially in the second half when the points were hard to come by- After 45 points were scored in the second period, the third period brought a much higher level of aggression on both ends. After four minutes in the second half, we saw one basket scored for Panathinaikos, none for CSKA and the entire second half saw a total of 48 points. Both teams had a solid 2-point efficiency  (Panathinaikos 53%, CSKA 50%), but also a very poor three-point efficiency  (Panathinaikos 5/21, CSKA 4/17).

Today's game is even more important. Panathinaikos are on the verge of elimination once again, but CSKA also don't want the series to return to Moscow. We can expect a similar story like on Monday and it's hard to expect a run'n'gun game on either end, especially as this is the fourth game in last 7 days and each game is very energy consuming. It all points to a new trench war in which every point will be hard to come by. The series reminds us of the last year's quarter-finals between Panathinaikos and Barcelona when no game in a series of 5 saw over 130 points in regular time The first game brought a more efficient performance from both teams but after that, the focus has been on defense.

Messina will be without Miloš Teodosić but it seems they might have their main organizer in the potential fifth game of the series. Of course, no one among CSKA wants that to happen and they will try to secure the Final Four place today but the game on Monday has confirmed just how difficult it is to win in Athens. There is no doubt that Panathinaikos will be very aggressive in defense and will try to limit CSKA to low figures.

The margin is getting lower and lower with each game for a reason. Apart from the first half in the first game and several minutes in the second period of the second game, we have two teams completely dedicated to defense. After 45 points in the second period on Monday, the second half saw only 48 points. The game was slow, the attacks often ended in the last seconds and I expect he same today. It would be difficult to expect anything else in an atmosphere like that, especially as this is the fourth game in the last seven days and both sets of starters are pretty worn out. The margin may seem low at first glance but it's hard to expect anyone getting 70 points here and I think another game of under 130 points is a pretty realistic state of things. Panathinaikos have ended their last 5 out of 6 home games in the Euroleague with under 130 points and the only exception was the game against Fenerbahce which ended in 76-67. However, even that game would have ended under this margin if not for the free-throw frenzy in the final stages of the game. Today's game is perhaps their most most important yet as Panathinaikos are once again on the verge of elimination but CSKA want to prevent the series from returning to Moscow.
