Serniotti: The semi-final is not yet lost

Trentino and UPCN played a match for the third position in the last WC, and the Italians won 3-0. The Argentinians want revenge

The Italians won't have nice memories of this game - there's not much left to say after 3-0. Their game was full of mistakes, both of the tactical and the technical kind, and recording a better results against such top-level individuals was thus impossible. They were in the lead by three to five points in the first two sets, but horrible assisting ruined their chance of actually doing something with it. Coach Serniotti and setter Sintini are to be blamed for that. Trentino in the end did so badly it seemed coach Serniotti didn't even bother to put any effort into preparing for Kuban's great club.

- We deserved a much better outcome, but we didn't use the opportunities we had against the team who are at the highest individual level quality wise. The result is a punishment for that - setter Sintini said.

As of set three, Suxhoa came on to organize the game, but that didn't help either. None of the Trentino's spikers had a successful day. Sokolov had a 14/37 record, Lanza 13/30, and Ferreira did just as badly. That was just one of the reasons for the defeat. They have not lost all chance of reaching semi final, but they will need a miracle in the next two games. They have to beat UPCN today 3-0, and hope that Al Rayyan beat the Argentinians 3-0. That will not be easy. Trentino beat the Argentinians 3-1 seven months ago to reach position three. Coach Serntiotti reflected on the match:

- UPCN sailed through the match against Esperance from Tunisia as expected. The Argentinian team are a few level above the African team and that was obvious from the start, despite them not doing their best. Coach Armoa staterd with the best line up, but then gave them time to rest later on since he didn't have to worry about the result. The opposite Lopes did best with 16 points, and the rest of the starting line up recorded two digit numbers, except for setter Gonzales. 

The Argentinians didn't forget about the defeat to Trentino in the battle for position three, and that will be additional motivation today. Just as importantly, the win today would secure the semi final before the last match against Al Rayyan, and that is exactly what coach Armoa wants. UPCN are a well organized team, the win yesterday gives them some peace and they can play with less pressure than the Italians.

- We needed the three points since this is the first step towards the semi final. We studied Esperance quite a lot to eliminate the chance of any kind of a surprise. We finished the last tournament in position four, and we want to take this one one level up - Armoa said.

Two days ago, I bet on Trentino believing in their organization and cohesion ahead of individual quality of Al Rayyan. It turned out the other way around as Trentino seemed completely lost at some points, and coach Serniotti made some wrong very wrong moves. On the other hand, UPCN had an easy task against Esperance, they got a confidence boost ahead of the crucial game, and they will certainly not want to decide the playoffs against Al Rayyan. Trentino won their last game against the Argentines by 3-1 but I would say that a lot has changed since that game, mostly in terms of confidence. In addition, UPCN seem like a team with more cohesion and team chemistry and they are more secure with their setter as Lanza and Ferreira are far from good form and the odds on the win for the Argentinians are certainly worth it.
