Triumph were the better team yesterday

Triumph have lost only three home games in the entire season, all against top teams, while Spartak have won only three away games

Triumph have managed to get the grip of their game after a poor performance in St. Petersburg and got a convincing home win. Interestingly enough, the result was the same as in the first game (74-57). However, Triumph had a much better control of the court and got the double-digit lead very quickly and sunk Spartak who turned their attention to the game today. 

We saw a completely different Triumph then a few days ago, Triumph similar to the one from the early stages of the season. Karashev managed to lift his players and one could expect the leaders of his team not to have such a poor day as in the first game. It was clear from the start who the better team was and Triumph were carried by a motivated Higgins (17 points, 5/10 field goal) to a new win and the third decisive game.

- In the first game in St. Petersburg, we missed too many things but we tried to play defense. Today, we did a good job in defense but we also did well on the attack. Our fans have helped us a lot and the home court advantage is very important. Higgins did very well in the attack and the rest of the players supported him. Zaryazhko and Valiev were very useful...Overall, I am happy with the way the Russian players did. I can't say we got rid of our Final Four fatigue, it's still present but we've shown character. However, Spartak will not give up until the end and we have to continue in the same rhythm tomorrow - said Karashev after the game.

The great news for Triumph is that Voronov and Spiridonov were available and the former scored 13 points and was the second top scorer for his team. Chappell was also in a good mood (10 points) but their front court could have done more (Landry and Raković got 6 points each).

Triumph have only confirmed they are the better team. Everyone was wondering about the state of the team after the first defeat but after what we've seen yesterday, Triumph are going into today's game as a huge favorite. It's hard to expect a major change in 24 hours and if Triumph play nearly as good as they did yesterday, they might as well book their flight for the quarter-finals.

The club from Lyubertsy have done a great job defending Spartak's foreign players. The American quarter scored a total of 35 points and neither one got more than 12. Bertt and McGrath played for over 32 minutes, Bostic played for almost 30 and their narrow rotation was bound to become a problem as the series wore on. Vetra saw that there was nothing to gain from the game and started rotating his team to give his leaders a chance to catch a break.

- Congratulations to Triumph, they defended very aggressively today. We were under pressure from the start and we lost control. We didn't find our game, we were too nervous, myself included. However, I think tomorrow will be a different game. We will go and try to be better than today. I think we have to be a bit smarter, considering the way Triumph play defense - said Gundars Vetra.

There was not much time to recover and Spartak are facing a tough task. Triumph have lost only 3 home games in the entire season, all against top teams (CSKA, Khimki, Gaziantep). On the other hand, Spartak have won only three games (Besiktas, Lietuvos, Kalev), and the wins in Turkey and Lithuania were the result of poor performances from their hosts. If Triumph play at their top level today, Spartak will not have much to hope for as they cannot match their quality. The home team have better Russian players and have shown they can stop their foreigners as well.

I've been thinking a lot whether to bet on Triumf yesterday and in the end decided not to because I wasn't sure how the players were doing, both physically and mentally, after the last defeat. However, the game yesterday displayed the real situation and the difference in quality between these two teams. When Triumf are at the top of their game, Spartak can't keep up, especially when they're not playing home. Besides, the Ljubercij-based club still have room for improvements. Triumf are a better-quality team in every segment, and they should be able to confirm that today. Spartak have improved since the season's beginning, but they don't have the quality necessary to reach the final and I find it difficult to imagine such an outcome. Triumf will do their best possible defense again, stop key players at Spartak, and they should again win by 10 points or more.
