CSKA in a difficult situation with four defeats in a row

The Moscow team managed to ruin their season in under two weeks, the situation in the locker room is pretty bad, and climbing back from 0-2 will be very hard. Lokomotiv want to end the series today

In under two weeks CSKA have squandered everything they have fought for this season. After losing the first two home games in the VTB quarterfinal to Lokomotiv, Messina's team also lost both matches in the Euroleague Final Four, which means they're entering this match with four losses in a row. We'd need to go quite far back to find the last time CSKA had such a situation, but the atmosphere in the locker room is far from ideal.

After the huge shock in the semifinal against Maccabi, CSKA could not muster enough mental strength for the third place match. It was clear they were missing the drive and intensity to play against Barcelona properly, and the Catalan team won the consolation prize with better defending in the second half.

- Too many players were empty after the semifinal- said Messina.

-It was hard to play for third place, especially after losing to Maccabi in such a way. It's hard to pull yourself together mentally and play aggressively. Two days ago we had a victory, we just wasted it. Emotionally it was very difficult- added Kaun.

Their despair over their missed opportunity got even worse after Maccabi beat Real in the final and won the title. Once again CSKA had a shot at the European crown, but failed when their quality was tested. The disappointment is overwhelming, and it seems the team from Moscow will see a lot of changes this summer. Messina was rather disappointed after the Maccabi match, and having in mind the increasingly frequent speculations about him moving to the NBA, it would not be strange if he were to vacate the CSKA bench next season, especially after the club president publicly criticized him after the Milan defeat:

- Messina has not managed to build a team in two years.

CSKA need to salvage what they can now. The VTB league and Russian championship were consolation prizes in the past seasons, but as things look now, this time around they could miss out on any trophies. CSKA went to Krasnodar trailing 0-2 and need to beat Lokomotiv twice in two days, which they can only do if they play at their top level. CSKA and Lokomotiv player four games this season, and Lokomotiv have proven they have the game to parry the Moscow team. Both Euroleague matches were decided  by one possession, and in the Moscow games Lokomotiv utterly dominated.

- We have a very hard game to play in a very difficult situation. We need to find the energy, primarily on the mental level, and the team cohesion to rise up to the challenge- said Messina.

He cannot count on Jackson for the remainder of the season, so the game will once again be organized by Teodosić. Pargo can step in for brief periods, but is a victim of being left aside throughout most of the season. Jackson is  injured, Teodosić is still recovering from his injury, and this certainly affects CSKA. Apart from Jackson, Messina also cannot count on Micov.

In the mean time, Lokomtiv played the return match of the Russian Cup final, and could not make up for the severe defeat in Kazanj. On the contrary, UNICS managed to beat them with at least +15 for the fourth time this season, only confirming that their style does not suit Pašutin's team at all There was no doubt about the winner, UNICS had a strong start and soon secured their first trophy this season.

- Congratulations to UNICS for a well deserved win. IN Moscow we played like one of the best European teams, here we played like the worst. When you play this poorly on defense at home, you cannot win. In order for us to become a truly great team, we need to quickly refocus on our next opponent every time. That is the difference between us and giants like Real, who win both in the Euroleague and turn right around and win in the Spanish championship as well. That's the winning spirit, and that's what we're aiming for- said Pašutin.

Lokomotiv and UNICS might meet again soon. If Lokomotiv get past CSKA, they'll almost certainly face the Kazanj team again (2-0 in their series against Samara), meaning Pašutin will have to find an answer for those matches. However, they still have to close this series, and CSKA should never be written off, though it is clear the atmosphere among the opponents is not at all good.

- I'm glad we managed to win the first two games, but we cannot relax, as two victories mean nothing, the series is still not over- said Williams, the hero of the first two games, with  caution, but he believes they will succeed today:

- We have to play as aggressively as we did in game two. We forced them to lose a few possessions in the third quarter and then scored on the counterattacks. If we play well on defense in the key moments, it will all go well.

- We have very hard games coming up, and we have to play the aggressive defense we played in Moscow with constant defense and pressure on the player with the ball. We have to force the opponents to give us turnovers, which will get us chances for easy points. Rebounding will be very important, CSKA are an athletic and strong team that you have to counter with all five of your players on rebounding. If we fail to score through counterattacks, we need good passing of the ball in set up offense in order to find the opponent's weak spot. We were united and focused on the goal of beating CSKA in Moscow. If we keep that attitude in this game, we have everything in our hands- said Pašutin optimistically.

Considering what I've seen the in the first 4 head-to-heads this season, and considering the situation in CSKA's ranks, the visitors cannot be the favorites. I think the bookies chose to decide the odds based on the team's renown and not the result in the series and the fact that CSKA are on the verge of relegation. After their debacle in Milan, the Muscovite team is in disarray. The club chairman has blame Messina for their failures in the last two seasons and Messina was very angry at his players for missing the chance in the semi-finals. I think their cooperation is coming to an end and this might be the last game for the Italian expert. CSKA will be without Jackson and Micov, two very important players, while Teodosić is far from ideal form, his offensive segment is lacking while he is renowned for defensive problems. Lokomotiv have the game to handle CSKA as Hendrix and Brown can match their rebounds and cause a lot of problems with their mobility. Simon and Ponkrashov are in solid form and Kalnietis has recovered from his injury. This is at least a 50-50 game and I would say Lokomotiv even have a slight advantage on account of home court advantage. They know how to handle CSKA and even when the Muscovites were in much better form this season, the two teams played two tight games in Euroleague that were decided by one ball. Lokomotiv have dominated both games so far, and CSKA were on a much better level then. Even if the Muscovites manage to pull their ranks through some miracle, I don't believe they will have an easy task. A win for the home team at 3.00 odds also has a very high value while I have decided to take this option which would cover a tight defeat.
