Real Madrid - Barcelona (87:78)

Both coaches agree this will be a long and difficult series

  • Published:

In the first game, which offered a festival of offense and attractive game-play, Barcelona won a break led by brilliant Tomić (17 points and 11 rebounds). Things should play differently today, especially by Real, who have not room for error.

It is a rare thing indeed to see a match over 190 points in a national championship final. The series between Real and Barcelona was expected to produce spectacular clashes, but such a festival of offense is surely something a neutral observer can only wish for. At times it seemed as if we were watching a friendly match in which the score was secondary, a match with no defense, as if these were not bitter rivals. One should think back far indeed to remember the last time Real and Barcelona played an important match (without extra time) that ended with such figures.

Previewing the first game, we already mentioned Real's issues on defense in the semifinal series against Unicaja. The team from Malaga failed to take advantage of that sufficiently to make it to the final, but we also pointed out that such performance by Real would not cut it against Barcelona. It is a well known adage that offense wins games, but defense wins titles. Allowing your opponents to score 98 points in your own court during a finals game is absolutely unacceptable, even when you have the offensive abilities of Real. The Madrid crew got away with it in the two home matches against Unicaja, but Barcelona did not let it slide. Unless they wish to lose the title and turn this season into a tragedy, Real will have to buckle up on defense.

- We went in with insufficient energy and they gained confidence and took the lead. This was just the first game and we knew this would be a long and difficult series. We certainly need to do a better job in defense, individually- said Laso.

- We knew it will be complicated. Defense, rebounding and the game we had during the season will be crucial. We're very good when we do well on defense and rebounds. We weren't on Thursday. We allowed them to score a lot and could not play at our pace- said Sergio Rodriguez of Real.

- This is just the first game, we still have four to go. The second game will be very important. We'll fight to win, and have to defend better 1-on-1- added Salah Mejri.

Last year in the final Real also lost one of the first two home matches, but took the break back in Barcelona and won the title in the decisive game. Nothing is settled yet, that's true, but Real will have to change their attitude. After they got slapped in the third game in Malaga, we saw a much more serious and tough Real and a game with just 146 points in regular time.

-We're playing the second game on Saturday, one we have to enter with a different mentality. This is just the beginning, and we had a similar situation last season. The team have proven they can play defense during the season, and that's what we have to do, play tougher than we did today- added Mirotić, who was the best player in the previous derby matches this season, but underperformed horribly on Thursday (just four points):

- Frankly, I'm angry at myself for not helping the team, as I did not perform as I should have, but I have one more chance on Saturday. Today was not a good day for me.

-
We're thinking only about the next game. Yesterday is in the past, and my players need to have a clear head. We need to focus. I obviously expect more from Mirotić, but also from Llull, Reyes, and Durden- said Real's coach Laso, who even got injured during the game, which will force him to sit out the rest of the series and undergo surgery afterwards.

- It will certainly be difficult, but I'll try to stay focused. The war has just begun, we still have a long way to go.

Although his injury bothers Laso, something bothers him even more.

- Refereeing. Some things are just tiring. It's frustrating to see the same referee officiate nine times for Barcelona, going from the Supercup, King's Cup, the playoff against Baskonia, Valencia, Real... However, if you think that is an excuse, you're wrong.

Barcelona, on the other hand, managed to keep a perfect away score in the playoff. After dismantling Laboral Kutxa in the quarterfinal and winning all three semifinal matches against Perasović's Valencia, Pascual's team won in Madrid as well. This was the first time Barcelona have beaten Real in an important match this season, but also a victory that gives them very nice prospects before the rest of the final series.

- Both teams played a very attractive game with high shooting percentages. We controlled our turnovers and rebounding better. However, the first victory does not decide anything, this will be a very long series- said Barcelona's Pascual, agreeing with his counterpart from Real, and added:

- We will have to do better on Saturday, the past is behind us.

Just like in the home matches against Unicaja, Real turned up the heat in the third quarter, but Barcelona held out when the opponent reversed the score to +5 (73-68), and did better in the final period. As expected, the Huertas-Navarro-Tomić trio carried the game, but unlike the fifth game against Valencia, this time they had great support from Boštjan Nachbar, who had a great performance (17 points, 7/10 shooting).

Barcelona are in a great situation now, and can look at the second game with much more ease, but they are far from satisfied with their performance so far. Pascual wants to repeat the Valencia run and win the first two away games, aware of the fact that Real are more than able to get back at them in Blaugrana. It was expected that Real would have the edge in a high scoring game, but Barcelona managed to win despite allowing 93 points. This should be very different match from the one 48 hours ago. Let's not forget that none of the five matches Barcelona played against Valencia ended over 152 points, and neither of the five final matches these two teams played last season went over 156 points either.

- Ever match is different. We scored a lot in the first one, but we also allowed a lot, which is unacceptable in such an important game. We'll have to play much better on defense tomorrow and take care not to concede easy points. We feel well, confident, but we have just a 1-0 lead, we need two more victories- said Papanikolau, who would not comment on Real's refereeing remarks:

- Both teams are under pressure, we want to get a 2-0 lead, Real want to equalize. The team that is stronger mentally will have an edge. We entered both the semifinal and final series with a handicap, and winning the title would be the greatest of feelings. We've gone through some tough periods, but we did it as a team.

The first game offered a great attacking performance on both ends - 191 points in 40 minutes but I doubt that will happen again today. Had Real managed to win, perhaps I wouldn't be writing this tip but this way I'm pretty sure we'll see a much tighter game. Real played two open games against Unicaja and managed to get through and they used the same approach in the third game where Laso's team got a rude awakening and realized they can't play like that. The 4th game ended with 73-73 after 40 minutes. Defense will be crucial part of this game and we should see a much more serious approach from the reigning champions. Barcelona have a better defensive line than Unicaja and all 5 of their games against Valencia were low-scoring affairs (152 points or less). Even though they won on Thursday, Barcelona were not too happy with their defensive performance as they are aware they allowed too many 'cheap' points. These teams played in the finals last year as well and none of those 5 games ended with over 156 points. Simply put the stakes are high and today's game could be decisive. They have shown many times this season that they are capable of playing excellent defense and 4 out of 5 H2Hs before Thursday ended under this margin. Even an irrelevant game played in May went under, and the one at Euroleague Final Four when Real demolished Barcelona and we the second half turned into an exhibition match. The margin is very high and has a huge value and I think this will be nothing like the game played 2 days ago.
