Netherlands - Mexico (2:1)

The Dutch have the individuals, Mexico have a team

  • Published:

Both teams are pleasant surprises of this edition of the WC. The Netherlands sailed through their group, lead by the Van Persie-Robben-Sneijder trio, while Mexico left a great impression as a team. But, one nice story will have to end today

The Dutch came to Brazil with a rejuvenated team and only a handful of well-experienced players, and nobody was sure what exactly this team are capable of. Louis van Gaal did a great job, and the Dutch are one of the four teams with the a perfect record after the first round. They were especially impressive in their first match, when they crushed the current world champions Spain 5-1.

Even before the tournament kick off, it was quite clear that the strong-suit of this team is not the youthful defense, but the offense lead by Arjen Robben, Sneijder, and van Persie. The orange team scored 10 goals in the first three games, becoming the most efficient team of the tournament. However, van Gaal is thrilled with their defense game more than with anything else:

- We did concede three goals, but two of those were the result of penalty kick. We conceded a field goal only against Australia. It's a proof our defense is at a high level, and doesn't allow the opponent to create good attempts. As a coach, I am extremely happy with fact my tactics is bearing fruit. If it wasn't, my head would be at stake.

Van Gaal couldn't count on van Persie in the last group stage game (suspension), and on defender Martins Indi, who had a concussion. Both are at his disposal today, but Martins Indi will start the match on the bench.

Mexico have done impressively so far, but van Gaal is worried about something entirely different ahead of their meeting in Fortaleza:

- What concerns me most is the damp and hot weather in Fortaleza. I was here last year, and humidity might be a great problem today. That is why I'm choosing only the ones who are completely ready for the line up. Yes, it will affect Mexico as well, but they are definitely better adjusted to those kind of conditions than us.

As for the opponent, the Dutch coach has learned something form the last game:

- I think Chile and Mexico play a very similar game, which is why we'll put similar tactics into force. I think I've learned a lot from that match, and I'll know how to stand up to Mexico.

Mexico were a very pleasant surprise, looking back at their first three games. The fact they reached the next stage is not as surprising, but their game is definitely deserves praise. They dominated against Cameroon, played a close game with Brasil, and then destroyed Croatia in the last game. But, if they lose today, all the good things they did so far will be erased. A win would see them meet with either Costa Rica or Greece, which sounds really good...

- We have to stay calm, modest, and not get carried away by the fact we reached the round of 16. We want to do a historic thing, but to do so, we have to beat the Netherlands.

As in the last matches, he won't be in the starting line up. Coach Herrera won't change much, mostly because there's no need for it. He can't count on the defensive midfielder Vazquez today, which might be a bit of a problem, since Montes and Medina, two defensive midfielders the coach was counting on can't help their team in Brasil. Defender Salcido is the closest to a defensive midfielder they've got here. His experience could make up for his shortcomings.

The rest of the team won't change, and neither will the formation. The 5-3-2 formation transforms into a 3-5-2 when they attack. Most of their attacks go on the sides, but the far-distanced shots are another thing the opponent should watch out for. They didn't score from afar in the first three games, but they did have a few good attempts.

- The Dutch are very intelligent in their game, almost computer-like. They have the players that can make the difference. We'll try to enforce our style, we're good in defense, it's our base in Brazil - goal keeper Ochoa said.

The Portuguese referee Proenca was appointed for this game. He did two games at this tournament so far, having awarded 3 yellow cards, and one red card, which proved he will not tolerate any unsportsmanlike conduct on the pitch.

Total shots on target 9.5 tip: Under   Omar
Odds Stake Min. odds Bookmaker
1.90 4/10 - Marathon bet
Nobody had more than eight hits to the goal post against Mexico - that's how many the title favorite Brazil managed, the Croatians were left with five, and Cameroon, who didn't look bad at all in that match, had four. The Dutch went over 9.5 against the weak Australia (14) and Spain (11), with the fact that at least half of those 11 against Spain were after the 70th minute, when the Spaniards fell apart. I think we don't have to fear that kind of scenario today, Mexico are an experienced and organized team, coming to the game like "the badger" which suits them great (we've seen it twice already), and I believe they'll stay competitive till the end.
The risk for this bet is the injury time, so that option shouldn't be eliminated, but it won't be surprising if they stay under the margin even after 120 minutes. I'll adjust the stakes a bit (I'd take a 6/10 in the group), but the bet is still too good to be tossed away.
