Croatia - Norway (26:34)

Norway want to get even for the defeat in the group

  • Published:

Croatian goalies were brilliant in the first match, with over 50% of saves. Norway crushed Slovenia and Serbia in the last matches, and are now on a mission to prove themselves after they were eliminated in the round of 16

Croatia got their second win from the placement playoffs, and that secured Hrupec's team being placed among the top ten national teams. Their primary goal was the quarterfinal, but this placement is pretty nice, too. Croatia managed to defeat the Czech in the second match of this championship, but this time with lot less problems than in the preliminary phase of the competition.

Unlike the previous matches, Croatia started furiously this time and solved the winner in the first 15 minutes. They lead 4-0 early on, had 10-2 by the middle of the first part, and the Czech just couldn't catch up. They threatened shortly after the second part started, when they got to -3 (15-18), but that was all Krejcir's team did. Croatia sped up and got the most convincing win against any of the European national teams.

- Girls did their best, and since we're already tired now, we make mistakes like everybody else, but after winning by 11, I have to be happy - Hrupec stated.

He had three players in a great mood - Josipa Mamic (8/10), Valentina Blazevic and Katarina Pavlovic (6/9 field goal each). The goalies were great again, and like in most matches, had a huge part in the win (Kapitanovic and Besen had 16 saves total, 41%).

- We'll get some rest on Friday, we have a good day to analyze and regenerate, we have to get ready well and play another big game. We have six wins behind us and we'd like to finish the WC with another win - Croatian coach announced the match against Norway.

Like against the Czech, Croatia come to their second match against Norway with a win from a few days ago. However, they'll have a much more difficult job if they want to do it again. After the big disappointment and being eliminated from the battle for the medal in the round of 16, Norway are on a mission to prove their qualities and improve the impression they left. They defeated Slovenia and Serbia by 14 goals, and definitely come to this match as a favorite.

- Girls were really convincing. The result shows we're much better than Serbia and we were brilliant in the first halftime. We got relaxed in the second part, missed a few shots,  but altogether, we had great realization. In the final match on Saturday, we have a chance to get even with Croatia, and girls can't wait for that match - Norway coach Steffanson said.

It was the defeat against Croatia that started Norweigan problems. After that, they were defeated against Korea and Germany in the round of 16, after starting the tournament in a great way, with three wins. Norway are eager to get even, to prove they're a better team than Croatia, and if they play like they played the last two matches, they'll have a great chance to make it happen.

The first match between these two teams offered an even fight in the first 45 minutes, and the Croatian goalies were brilliant. Ivana Kapitanovic got substituted by Gabrijela Besen who literally locked the Croatian goal in the last quarter of the match. Norway didn't score in the last 14 minutes, and Croatia had a 5-0 series in that period, winning in the end.

Gabrijela Besen had 11 saves out of 15 shots in 27 minutes she spent on the goal, and the Croatian duo had 23 saves total, with only 20 goals conceded. With all the quality from the goalies, and decent performances by the Croatian defense, those numbers can hardly, if at all, be repeated. Neither of the teams lack motivation, Croatia want to thank their fans for their support by winning, and Norway want to get even for the defeat from few days ago.

Even though this is a fight for the ninth place, the last matches confirmed that Norway are definitely a team that deserve a higher placement. They were eliminated before the quarterfinals because of the defeats against Korea and Germany, who are among the top four teams in this competition, but perhaps the key defeat was the one against Croatia. It staggered Norway after the great start they had, and ended their rhythm. Norwegian coach confirmed his players are really motivated, and we can see how much from the matches against Slovenia and Serbia. They're respectable teams, and Norway crushed them in the way neither Russia nor Denmark could, by 14, even though Norway missed six counterattacks and could have celebrated even more convincingly. Even three goals difference will be enough against Croatia, who secured their placement among the top ten, and even though they shouldn't lack motivation in front of Croatian audience, I'm pretty convinced Norway will be more motivated. Croatia can't repeat the match they played in the group. Then, the defense were brilliant, lead by two fantastic goalies, and Gabrijela Besen played the match of her life. 11 saves out of 15 shots in 27 minutes on the court, without conceding one goal in the last 14 minutes. Norway had about 32% realization, by far the least in this championship. They faced tough Serbia's defense, a similar team in concept, also a bit slow like the Croatian one, and they solved that convincingly. They're undoubtedly better than Croatia, and I believe they'll confirm that in a normal match.
