Bordeaux - Evian (2:1)

Bordeaux undefeated in prior clashes of these teams

  • Published:

Evian bringing some quality reinforcements, including dangerous winger Sougou

After a great August, Bordeaux had a disappointing start of September. They played a very poor match in Guingamp, barely being a threat up to the final period, and deserved to lose.

- I hope this will jolt the players into realizing that we can only succeed through hard work. Had we played this way against a team from the lower league, we would have lost too. It might be a good thing that we're no longer top ranked, it might bring us our focus back- said coach Sagnol later on.

Interestingly that was the fourth time in a row that they concede a goal, but up to now they always reacted in time. This time they started playing after 75 minutes.

Against Evian they will likely take initiative right away. There are no major roster changes, but we'll probably see some new faces such as Faubert and Plašil. The injury of midfielder Traore remains the biggest problem for them.

- They're in desperate need of points and will fight for them with all they've got. Technically they're not among the best of the league, but they make up for that with courage and drive- commented Sagnol on the arriving team.

A defeat against Marseille put Evian three points behind the other teams. Their weakened defense had a day they'd rather forget, especially first-timer Givet, who was not even in the roster for this trip.

He brought recovered Sabaly instead, who will be a great asset on the left, and another wing reinforcement, returning Sougou, one of the better performing players last season. Along with Tejeda from Costa Rica, who is still waiting for more play time, this could be a completely new edition of this team.

They never beat the Girondines, but managed to get a draw three times (out of the seven matches played). All four defeats were with a minimal lead, and they managed to score every time.

- We're going away without fear,  Guingamp showed that they can be beaten. We're only interested in the score, we cannot think about the quality of the game now. We'r ready for war- said midfielder Kone.

Bordeaux played a few great games, but conceded a goal in each of them except the first one against Montpellier. Their defense is obviously a sore spot, at least until the reinforcements manage to adapt (Ilori and Contento had a disastrous game in Guingamp, and neither have a substitute right now), which Evian can take advantage of, especially if Sougou goes on from where he left off last season.
The away team have not scored points three times in five games, but they're definitely not repeating the fumble from the premiere, and they achieved their goal against PSG with a 0-0 outcome. Other figures are strongly in favor of this bet: they scored in seven of their last ten away matches, and five of the last games these teams played each other, with Bordeaux failing to defend at home since January!
