Denmark - Russia (38:21)

Henriksen: We have to win this match

  • Published:

Denmark will probably fight for a place between 9th and 16th if they lose against Russia, because they already lost to Spain. The Russians were losing against Macedonia for 58 minutes, but ended up taking both points

The exclusive previews are written by our reporters directly from Poland, the venue for this EC!

Denmark had a very tough test in their first match, against Spain. Things didn't go as planned from the beginning, and the Spaniards quickly got away to 10-5. Henriksen tried pressing all over the court, but nothing worked. Spain had solution for everything. However, it seems he found his words in the locker room, because his players started the second half-time with a lot more eagerness, motivation, and decisiveness. The goalies Nielsen and Gade started saving a lot, and the Spaniards scored only 3 goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half-time. Sadly for Henriksen, Denmark couldn't keep that up till the end.

- I'm a bit sad because we played a really good second half-time, but from the first half-time perspective, that second half-time was quite an improvement, and we have to take that to tomorrow. We started well, but made too many mistakes in the last 20 minutes of the first half-time, and Spain are too good of a team not to use that. I repeat, it's a shame for that part, because we played much better in the rest, even though we missed a few sure shots in that part, too - Henriksen said after the match.

However, not everything is lost. Denmark still have the chance to go to the second round. After Russia defeated Macedonia, this match could be crucial for the second place.

- True, we have to win tomorrow. We know already that it will be a tough match. We expect an exciting match, but it won't be simple - Henriksen added.

The Russians run a lot, but Denmark like that. You could see it in the preparation matches against Croatia, in June, when their opponent was another team that force the fast center. They knew how to use all the space in the opponent's defense then, and there's a lot of that in the Russian defense. The Danish game organizer, Nicolas Norager, played a great game yesterday, pulled his team in the second part, and was made the Danish MVP. His good form is definitely another reason for Henriksen's optimism before today's match.

The match between Macedonia and Russia was definitely the most intensive one on the first day of the competition. The Russians came in as the favorites, but the previews that Jovic's selection could give them a hard time came true. The Russians started the match really badly, conceding eight goals in the first eight minutes. The Macedonians managed to stop them from getting fast and easy shots. Even the time-out didn't help Alekseev, the Macedonians got the huge eight goals advantage (15-7), and the Russians were in a difficult position.

Still, the end of the first part offered a better game, and a hope of turnover. Macedonia went to the half-time with +3, and Russia started the second half-time better, and evened out. In those moments, the Macedonian resistance seemed to be reducing, but they replied in a great way and got a new big advantage. The Russians were five goals behind in the last ten minutes, but used a few Macedonian mistakes when coming back to defense, and two unnecessary 2-minutes suspensions, to catch up in the last minutes. Aleksandr Alekseev's team got their first leadership in the 59th minute, in their last offense, and then had a stroke of luck when Taleski hit the goal post with the sound of the alarm.

- It was a really difficult and evened out match. Macedonia are a good team in all generations. We have to play better and win the next match - coach Alekseev said after the barely gained win.

Sergej Bolotin stood out with 7/11, and 4/4 7 meter throw shots, and like in the qualifications, Santalov had a big role (6/10). Roman Dasko scored six, with maximum effect. It's interesting that the Russian goalies conceded 20 out of 30 goals in the lower part of the goal, which could be interesting to the Danes.

As expected according to what they showed in the qualifications, the Russians play fast, with short offenses. The fast center is something Alekseev insists on, and that's what brought Russia the turnover in the last 10 minutes yesterday. However, Denmark aren't Macedonia, their roster is more evened out, and their players are definitely ready to follow the rhythm imposed by Russia.

Defensively, Russia will play 5-1 and 3-2-1 again, but Macedonians expertly revealed all the weaknesses and holes in that defense. Denmark are faster runners, and the Russian defensive players who didn't prove to be too good in 1-on-1 game, could be in big trouble.

Talking yesterday with Henriksen, when the Russians' preferred fast game style was mentioned, he only smiled and added: - It will be an exciting match. It's all clear, the Russians are running the most on this competition, they have a really fast center, and I hardly see this ending under 65 goals, only more. They played against a really slow Macedonia yesterday, who literally dragged themselves to the offense. The final result was 81 goal, with numerous hits to the goal posts by Macedonians in the last ten minutes. The Danes definitely won't play like that, they love running, and were the ones trying to impose the rhythm yesterday. The 52 goals against Spain shouldn't fool you, we'll see a completely different story today. Denmark faced Croatia in June, another team with the fast center, but are much slower than Russia, and it ended with 69, 60 and 54 goals, with Croatia only scoring 19 in that match. On the other hand, the Russians take everything to over with their style, with 61 against Macedonia, they also had over 60 against Poland, and 70 and 73 against Hungary. When the opponent who likes to run is on the other side of the court, it ends up like it did against the Belarus, who played +69 in four games. I wouldn't be surprised a bit if we see this end with 70 or over goals, and it's clear why this margin has a huge value.
