Lack of quality on the bench and physical inferiority a huge problem for Al Ahli

Flensburg played an average game and managed to beat Taubate without too much trouble. Vranješ wants a better performance and a new win today

Al Ahli didn't have too big expectations ahead of this competition. The goals that were set were realistic as the problems in the preparations were too big for a noteworthy result. A defeat against El-Jaish almost certainly means the end of their dream of reaching the semifinals. Only 30 good minutes was not enough and El-Jaish crushed them in the second half and got the win.

- The team played well in the first half but the second showed lack of real preparations. We literally had one month to prepare for this, which obviously isn't enough - said Mahmoud Najji, who's taking coach Zaoubi's place (absent with back injury).

- It was a great game. We were ready to play with them and had our first coach been with us, we would have been more competitive in the second half as well - said Mahfoudh.

If the lack of preparations was felt in the first game, we can't imagine what the scenario will be like today when they are playing against a much stronger opponent. Only 24 hours have passed since their game against El-Jaish and Flensburg have a much bigger quality in their ranks. Their top 6 players have played 40 minutes or more, they didn't make too many rotations, which only confirmed how thin Al Ahli's squad is.

Their physical inferiority was mentioned ahead of yesterday's game as well as they only have 3 players above 180 cm (no one above 185 cm or 90 kg).They scored only 3 goals from 9 meters out against El-Jaish, and Flensburg's defense is even better. We can expect Al Ahli to struggle a lot with conversion, while technical errors will open up the space for easy goals for Flensburg.

The reigning European champions have, quite expectedly, opened the Super Globe cup with a win but they were far from thrilling, especially in the first half. It was visible they needed some time to adapt as they played a solid game only in the last 25 minutes.

- I'm happy with the result but not with our performance. We had a difficult week in Germany and we had to face a long journey to Doha. In the first half, we struggled against Taubate's 4-2 defense, which is something we don't usually play against in Europe. In addition, they had an excellent keeper that got many saves. We did much better in the second half - said Ljubomir Vranješ.

- We played pretty poorly and we are not happy with the way we played. We have to change many things if we want to fulfill our goal - said Karlsson.

Flensburg's goal here is the fight for the title and it's clear they will have to beat Barcelona to get it. Their first-game performance wasn't enough but Vranješ has a couple of games in which he can put things into their place. We can expect a much better performance from Flensburg today. While Al Ahil played with the same 6-man squad for most of the game, only 2 Flensburg's players spent over 35 minutes on the court. The quality of the bench could play a major role today.

- Flensburg are a team that focuses on each game. Now we have only the second game in our mind. Of course, we have to do better if we want to lift the trophy - added Vranješ.

The game against El-Jaish has shown all of Al Ahli's weaknesses. Poor fitness and lack of height were a problem against the strongest Asian team in the second half, which El-Jaish could have won by 10 goals had they kept the pressure up. Flensburg are one step above El-Jaish and their defense is even better and can limit Al Ahli to under 20 goals. Vranješ definitely wasn't happy with their performance yesterday and Flensburg still beat a tricky opponent by 6 goals despite their mediocre performance. I expect them to do better today and get a double-digit win. Al Ahli are without their main coach here, they will be even more tired and Flensburg's defense could result in numerous technical errors and easy counters.
