Bayern Munich - Manchester City (1:0)

The form is not ideal, but expectations are great

  • Published:

Bayern are not in top form, but keep winning through sheer quality. City have not won their last two league matches, but still believe they can repeat the success they had here last year. The suspension of coach Pellegrino might be a slight issue, as he will not be able to lead his players from the bench

This is the third time in four seasons that Manchester City are facing the biggest German team in the group stage, and although they won 3-2 in Munich last year, they faced Barcelona in the elimination stage and the team desperately looking to play in Europe once again had to say good bye early. Things will not be easy today either, regardless of Bayern not playing their best lately.

Coach Guardiola's team are struggling with injuries and trying to get the players who lead Germany to the world title back in shape. Their performance in the Bundesliga has not suffered so far points-wise, but they're not as superior as they used to be last season. City will also be their toughest test by far.

- A new season brings new excitement. Our goal is to do better this season that we did last, as we were close to the title back then- said Guardiola, with many compliments to the opponents and other classic empty coach phrases. The only missing expression was that "anyone can win in football".
As the reporters insisted, he did say a few words about the team's status:

- Ribery will certainly be absent, though I still don't know what the exact nature of his injury is. He might play in the league duel on Saturday. Benatia just arrived from Roma and has some minor muscle issues, so we're not risking with him, we're happy with his progress.

Just like most teams, Bayer should field a 4-2-3-1 formation today. Pepe also lost center defender Badstuber, but the Dante-Boateng duo in defense is providing the safety he needs. Lahm will cover the right side, while Alaba and Xabi Alonso will hold the midfield.

Lewandowski was announced to play point forward, with Muller, Robben and Goetze behind his back. Some of the media have speculated that the Dutch player suffered a minor injury, so his starting position should be taken with some caution.

Manchester City have the Arabian sheikh's millions and two Premiership titles, but the Champions League is the icing on the cake that's missing for the club to get among the greats. They have made not significant changes to the team this season, none in fact if we disregard the arrival of the overpaid defender Mangala from Porto, who has failed to capture coach Pellegrini's attention so far, while forward Negredo left due to low play-time and issues with financial fair-play.

This means Pellegrini is working with the same roster he had last year, and is travelling to the Allianz Arena in order to conquer the heights of Europe. Speaking of the lineup, the injury of forward Jovetić and suspension of right back Zabaleta are spoiling his plans. Sergio Agüero's play-time is also carefully dosed due to his prior injuries and he usually enters from the bench, but the away team have their strengths and can bravely and courageously enter the battle with the mighty German machine and what remains of Guardiola's "tik-tak".

- Bayern might be stronger, but we are in the habit of going for the win everywhere we go. Arsenal got away on Saturday, but we've gained extra confidence for the trip to Munich- said the away team's strategist, Manuel Pellegrini, who will still be starting with extra defensive midfielders (Toure, Fernandinho, Milner) and just Edin Džeko at point forward, while something they can be happy about is the great form of David Silva, their best player at the start of this season.

- I think the way we'll approach this match, just like many others, is by trying to impose our football qualities, since allowing Bayern to have the ball makes it hard to get it and lowers your chance of success. Possession will be the key in this match, and a priority for us, since us having it means Bayern will have a hard time getting it too, and will not be that much of a threat-  stressed Pellegrini, who spoke to the English media about how unbalanced the groups are and how it's necessary for the draw procedure to change, but this sounds more like an alibi for the possible failure, as both Roma and CSKA are very serious opponents, as are Bayern too.

The Chilean will also not be on the bench tonight, due to suspension, so his assistant Ruben Cousillas will be at the tiller.

I appreciate Bayern and everything Pep Guardiola managed to achieve there, but this doesn't make much sense in my opinion. City are the English champion, and I'd struggle to find a team that are a complete favorite against them. An out of form Bayer with Ribbery, Schweinsteiger and Rafinha missing and with Robben in question cannot decisively beat City. On the contrary, I believe the English can surprise today, as they have the quality. The strength of Bayern was in their wingers and the heart of the midfield. Robben, Ribery, Kroos, Schweinsteiger, even Lahm, who did great work last year as defensive midfielder. Lahm is going back to right side as Rafinha is missing, Xabi Alonso just started put all the dots together in the team, Goetze and Lewandowski have yet to get used to the leading roles in Bayern. Far from it that the Bavarian team are bad, but they're not facing some underdog team: Kompnay, Toure, David Silva, Nasri, Džeko.
