KIF Kolding - Besiktas (34:31)

Kolding without two important players

  • Published:

Besiktas have now lost any chance, even in theory, of getting to the elimination stage, while Wisla's victory against Barcelona brought Kolding back into race for the top spot. Kolding dominated in Turkey, Besiktas are facing a very hard game

This should be an easy task for the Danish champions, and a victory after two Champions league games without one. They had a draw against Wisla at home and then suffered a decisive defeat against Flensburg, who limited them to a single goal in the first ten minutes of the math. Despite all that, they still have a chance of getting to the top of the group since Barcelona lost in Poland yesterday. As the Danes have yet to play in Barcelona as well, it's clear there will be no relaxing today and that they will play this one full throttle.

They haven't played a match since Flensburg, and could finally have a breather during the week. Coach Aron Kristjansson visited his home Iceland for a while too, but found bad news upon his return. His starting left winger Martin Dolk and left back Lasse Andersson got injured against the Germans, with the latter playing great over the past few weeks and covering somewhat poorer performances by Bo Spellerberg. Both of them are out for the rest of the year, we'll see them back on the team with the new season in February.

- It's a shame, but such is life, I can do nothing about it. I'm focusing on getting 100% ready again- said Lasse.

- Of course it's a pity we have to play without them, they've both been playing well and we'll miss them. Luckily, we have other good players to replace them- commented coach Kristjansson calmly.

Dolk will be replaced by young Landin, brother of Löwen goalkeeper, while Andersson's minutes on court will likely be split between Karlsson and Spellerberg, if need be even veteran Boesen, whom they've seldom used this season.  Besiktas are the least of their worries in the big picture, as they have five league games scheduled between December 9th and 27th, with derbies at Aalborg and at home against Bjerringbro among those five.

Dolk was also the primary penalty executor, so it's likely Spellerberg will take over that task. After Wisla beat Barcelona yesterday, Besiktas have now lost any chance, even in theory, of getting to the elimination stage. This match is thus of little importance, the Turkish team were not strong enough for this competition. The only team they could parry were Alingsas, the rest were a level above. This season served primarily to get the team more experience in order to be more competitive in their next attempt at Champions league.

- This is the first time we've managed to get to the group stage of the Champions league, and we lack experience compared to other teams. Regardless of us no longer having any chance to advance to the next stage, we'll do our best in the remaining matches- said captain Done.

Today they'll be playing a tough away match in Denmark, and yesterday's defeat of the Catalan team in Poland made it even more dificult, as Kolding see they have a chance at the top spot and will not leave anything to chance. They already won the match in Turkey, easily, so Besiktas don't have much of a chance here.

A very low margin having in mind the way both teams performed so far and the fact the game should be decided way before it ends. Kolding were a defense oriented team last season and built their success on that, but this season we're seeing a different team. They're doing much better on offense, confirmed by the fact that the only time they stayed below 30 goals in their last eight home matches was against Barcelona. All eight were ended with at least 54 goals. Kolding should not have any problems with the Turks today, and should get a comfortable lead by halftime which should allow for a calm second half, just like in Turkey where the game ended at 57. Kolding are playing a derby against Aalborg in two days, and I don't believe they'll go full throttle on defense in the finish of the game, which should allow Besiktas to score their allotment too. The Turks on the other hand lost their last chance of getting to the next stage after Wisla beat Barcelona yesterday. This makes their motivation very dubious, especially when running back on defense, and could contribute to quite a few easy goals for Kolding. The statistics also favor this bet, as Kolding have five overs in seven matches (53.3 goals), while Besiktas have four in seven (54.1). Since the match should be practically over after 30-40 minutes, we should see a more relaxed game in the finish, and a total of at least 55 goals.
