Schaffhausen - Motor Zaporozhye (32:37)

Baur: I want faster attacking

  • Published:

Motor worked on defense since they have to do without the defense specialist Evdokimov again. That was causing them quite a lot of trouble in the first match, even though they believed to have solutions that would replace him

The game in Ukraine wasn't as successful as the Swiss league defending champions had hoped for. They got down in the very beginning and never managed to get less than 2 or 3 points short of Motor. When necessary, the Ukrainian team would respond. Baur and Kadetten are to meet Motor once again, this time home, and cannot afford to fail.

- We'll see how important this game is later on, but it seems it will be the key game for us. If we win, we'll have the chance of reaching the next round, but a defeat would leave us with no chance ahead of the last match in this group we will play home - Baur said.

Baur is clearly trying to make his team aware of his important this game is, even though they probably already know it. Good thing for Baur's team is the fact they beat Aarau in a Swiss league game ahead of this meeting, which got them on the winning track.

- Each win is important. I'm happy with how we did that match, especially with the number of goals we scored. I think we can be proud - Baur said and added:

- Motor play tough defense and fast counter-attacks. We need to reduce the technical faults to a minimum and we need to be more efficient in offense. It is the key to success, which is why I expect us to play even faster and more goal-oriented than before. We need to be more dangerous!

Kadettern tried to use that tactics in the first match, but it didn't work all too well, except when Motos released the grip for a little while late in the game. Kadetten will try and do the same today, as their match with Aarau suggests. It ended with 62 goals scored, with Kadetten's goal keeper recording 15 saves. Stojkovic recorded 18 at Aarau.

Four of Kadetten's players (Liniger, Kukučka, Starczan Muggli) were announced to possibly get back, but in the end only left back Liniger really did, proving that the injury didn't mess with his ability to be one of the key players on his team. He finished with brilliant efficiency - 8/8, 5/5 in 7-meter throws. But...

Liniger really did great for the 15 or so minutes, but he aggravated his back injury and missed the training today - the coach said.

Claiming he's injured again might be just a deceit because Liniger is one of the key players on home team. Richiwien and goal keeper Portner's health were also talked about:

- Portner is not doing great, I can confirm that he will be on the bench. It's very important to have a second goal keeper on the team.

Nothing was said about the chance for Kukučka, Starczan or Muggli to get back. Baur says the list of injured player is still long and no one them will probably be back today. What Kadetten can count on today is loyal fan support.

- Playing home is always easier. The kind of support we had when facing Kielce and Dunkerque, can help us win today. We need to have faith in ourselves - Buar said.

Motor's coach Bebesko confirmed that his defense specialist Evdokimov won't play today either. The last match proved Motor don't have good-quality replacements for him. The only thing that saved them in the last match was the fact Kadetten did well below expectations and their goal keeper Stochl, who was much more successful than Kadetten's Maier.

- His injury forced us to work on defense ahead of this game. We tried to perfect a few new solutions after making those mistakes in the first match. It was not simple since we had only three proper practice sessions since - coach Bebesko said.

As per usual, Motor had to spend significant amount of time on recovery and the trip back home since they train in Kiev.

Motor are clearly keen to do well and for now cope with the constant travelling. But we need to see whether that will have effect on the performances. Their trip to Schaffhausen was almost shorter than their trip from Kiev after the last game - at least something they can be happy about.

- We'll be flying for some 6-7 hours, which is not as bad. After that, we have some 40 km on the bus to Schaffhausen - the coach said.

They changed the time zone, but probably won't have much problem adjusting to central European time. They are happy that the fans back in Ukraine will have the chance to watch the match:

- We will feel the support, even if the fans are watching us on TV. Ukrainian handball is getting more attention than ever before - a lot of channels broadcast the games - Bebsko said.

The first match went to 57 points; it could've gone up to 60 if it weren't for a bunch of missed shots. Kadetten was the leader of that, but Motor also had a couple of bad decisions. What can we expect today? Baur could give us an even faster and more dangerous offense which will create more chances for shots, and the big plus could be also the return of the left wing Liniger. For him the Swiss don't have a proper substitute, but I don't see such a scenario today. I also don't expect a lot of changes in Kadetten's defense which simply isn't that strong to keep Burka and Onufrijenko at bay. But they're not such a problem as is the pivot Seveljev - the Swiss had no remedy for him. I expect something similar today. especially since Jurca will play the second defense: that's ideal for Seveljev to show how physically powerful he really is. Of course, the things that go in favor of the over is the fact that the first Kadetten's goalman, Portner, has not fully recovered and that he will start the match sitting at the bench, and will probably stay there until the end. The second goalkeeper Maier is not the same class, although he's been put into Europe's future goalkeepers, which he proved in the first match. All in all, I think the 57-58 score match is not unrealistic.
