Olympiacos without Spanoulis and Petway in the tough away match in Thessaloniki

Spanoulis got injured in the practice session ahead of the Fenerbahce game, which went on to prove they are not the same team when he's not on it. They are to meet another team with a good defensive-end today and without their driving force, Olympiacos will need to rely on defense even more

There is no doubt that the game in Thessaloniki is the best one in this round. Apart for the game in Athens, this is the toughest away game for Olympcicos in Greece and the one that could have a great impact on the race for the top spot in regular season. PAOK already brought Panathinaikos down home, they were very close to beating them in the Cup as well and Olympicoas won't have it easy today, especially what with Spanoulis being out.

While they were more than capable of standing up to Panathinaikos home, PAOK couldn't do the same in Athens last round. They manged to stay close the first half but Panathinaikos played better as the game resumed to record an easy win.

- We didn't want to let them run and we were successful in it for about 25 minutes. But, they scored a lot of easy points in the third period and got away - coach Markopoulos said.

Aris caught up with PAOK in the table but they lost last Saturday meaning PAOK have a chance to take a step into reaching the coveted 3th place. However, the task they will be faced with today is most likely the toughest one. They are to meet a team aiming for both Greek and European titles. Good news for Markopoulos is, Margiritis is back to training. He is very important for their key but still not completely ready. He is supposed to help at least a bit today, though.

- This is a game in which we need to be 100% focused, we can't allow Olympiacos to take anything without putting up a fight. They play a tough defense which results in a lot of easy points for them. Each mistake will cost us dearly and we need to careful. We need absolute focus to stop the fast pace. We have good option in offense to stay competitive - Markpoulos said.

Regardless of the great race for regular season top spot, Euroleague is still number one priority at Olympiacos. The home defeat to Fenerbahce put them in a tough position. In order to play the Qfs home, they will probably need to bat CSKA in Moscow. Fenerbahce did an excellent job in defense and stopped Spanoulis (5 points and 10 assists, 1-for-8 from the floor) whose performance was clearly affected by injury. Olympaicos struggled in rebounding massively (29-42).

- We had two players with problems, Mantzaris and Spanoulis. Spanoulis' injury is worse than Mantzaris' but they both deserve praise for putting the team first. These problems affected us, this was not one of out top games - Sferopulis said.

Spanoulis is out today, which is the most important thing. It's impossible to make up for his absence, he is the driving force on the offensive end, which should result in defensively-orientated Olympiacos focusing on that segment even more. 

Petway, Katsivelis and Tsiarelis are still out while Mantzaris went to Thesaloniki with the team but might not be able to help much. Given all the problems and PAOK's game style, we should be in for a tough game in which teams will fight hard for each point. Olympiacos managed to limit PAOK to 55 points in the first head to head at Piraeus and will definitely try to do the same here.

- We struggle with injuries and we want to make up for the missing players to record a win that will keep us at the top. We can't let them take easy shots or allow them second attacks after offensive rebounds. We need to be completely focused and not allow them to think they can win - Dunston said.

This margin is set a few points too high, even with ideal lineups and if you don't know anything about the current situation on the teams. The margin was set at 141-142 points when Panathinaikos played in Thessaloniki and Olympiacos are better in defense while Panathinaikos play a faster-paced game. Those games ended at 125 and 139 points. Oly are without their top player Spanoulis here. They cannot make up for him. He's the driving force on their offensive end. The game against Fener only confirmed that when he's not his best or when the opponents manage to stop him, Olympiacos struggle with efficiency greatly. Oly normally rely on defense more away from home, they finished under this margin in all tougher away games in Greece and defense should be even better today. PAOK's coach Markopolos wants total focus, slowing down the pace and reducing the technical mistakes to a minimum. I expect a heated atmosphere and a fight for each point. The first h2h, which was settled early in the second part, finished at only 135. I expect the game today to be much closer and each team finishing with 60-70 points.
