Netherlands - Norway (22:30)

The Dutch almost certainly out of the final tournament if they don't win

  • Published:

Although they conceded 27 against Turkey, the Norwegians did not waste energy on defensive issues. For them it was much more important that they scored easily

Oranje did not manage to surprise Croatia away. On the contrary, they suffered a double figures defeat against the highly favored home team, but they're not the least bit worried about that. As their selector admitted, they were focused on the second match, the one they're playing against Norway at home today. Against Croatia they managed to resist for about 10 minutes, but then their opponents left them dry for almost nine minutes and took off to a much more casual seven goal lead. The winner was practically decided then and there, the rest was a mere formality.

- I'm sorry that we played the last few minutes of the match so poorly. We just have to play our game to the end of the match, be patient and as disciplined as at the start- criticized the Dutch selector, but also revealed the positive side of the Koprivnica match:

- We started the match very well. We should definitely keep in mind we were facing one of the best teams in the world and put up a very good fight. We made almost three steps forward compared to our earlier matches, but the end somewhat devalued our game. I still believe that this was a great experience prior to the other qualification  matches and that the team have certainly learned something from this duel.

Above all they've learned they need to return to defense in order to have any kind of a chance against teams such as Croatia, and today they'll need to do that even more - the fact remains that Berge's players displayed an almost textbook example of transitional playing, they were almost infallible. The Croatian team on the other hand scored a bunch of easy transition goals against the Dutch, and such poor defensive transition will hardly get them any success.

- The Croatia match is great material from which we get details to work with in the coming matches. The crucial thing is that we're a real team, constantly together, very united. I believe that kind of an atmosphere does not happen on it's own; that shows that these guys are really eager to succeed and have a lot of confidence- added Fiege.

Their first goal, set even before the qualifications started, was to beat Norway, and they've been saving their best player, Van Olphen, for that match. Fiege already spoke about how important he is prior to the match against Croatia:

- He is very important for our team, not only because he is an European elite but also as he is a symbol of Dutch handball. Naturally, his return to the team will not mean we'll win right away, but he will definitely be one more quality player and make the entire team better.

Today they'll get a chance to prove that thesis, but this certainly won't be easy. The Norwegians showed how powerful they are against the Turks in the first round match they played at home. They came close to scoring 40 goals, and fully achieved their battle plan on court, which was to out-run their opponents.

- I'm extremely pleased with the decisions my players made on offense and the quality of our counterattacks, though I do feel we can do even better on defense. We had quite a few issues on that end, but I'm still happy with our performance- said selector Berge, who's obviously not too worried with the defensive side of the game.

Interestingly enough, his right winger Bjornsen had a different view of the Norwegian game:

- This was a match filled with easy goals. The wingers enjoy games like this, I'm very glad that the defense was good enough to provide us with many counterattacks.

As we've mentioned earlier, today they'll face a team who are not so disciplined when it comes to returning to defense.  This means that the Norway's offensive potential should show itself once again, but defense will be tested as well. The Dutch have shown they can work well with their pivot, and Olphen will give them one more good scorer. However, without a quality defense that will hardly be sufficient for a victory against a team whom handball experts see as a certainty in Poland next to Croatia.

The Norwegian coach Berge sent a very clear message after the first match and conceding 27 goals against Turkey. He praised the offense, but didn't really care about the defense. His main goal was to outrun the opponent, and will probably try the same today because their transition looked fantastic. Besides, we can expect the offense to remain their forte, after they lost the experienced Borg Lund in the defense. On the other side are the Dutch who showed a lot faster game when they faced Croatia, compared to the last year. They go more to the back, they play the fast center. Today, the rested Olphen will be back, which means a big offensive plus because he's not only the best Dutch player, but with him, the whole team looks much better. So, we should expect the Dutch team to use combinatorics, and on the other side is the defensively weaker and offensively stronger Norway, so I expect a match with about 60 goals total, like the one the Norwegians played against Turkey.
