Russia - Hungary (23:27)

Torgovanov's first match on the Russian bench with lots of problems in the back line

  • Published:

After the Qatar debacle, Torgovanov came to coach the Russians, and this is his first test. Igropulo isn't in the lineup, nor are the injured Gorbok and Atman, Derevenj is out, and Žitnjikov and Sorokin are questionable... The Hungarians are almost complete, the only one out is the injured Gulyas

The Russians won't keep the Qatar World Championship in good memory. They went there eager to take a step towards the top of the world's handball, and ended up only the 19th. Kulešov said right after losing the round of 16 that he'll back out, and the Russians only did their job in the last matches. It was obvious that a new era will begin, and Dmitrij Torgovanov became the coach for the national team. He's coaching St. Petersburg. When he played for Russia, their national team won anything they could, golden medals in Europe, world, and the Olympics.

- We're only focusing on the European championship qualifications right now - Torgovanov said after becoming the national team coach.

As for this group, Russians were in a good situation when Torgovanov came. They only played one match, and beat the home team who were one of the favorites for one of the first two places of the group, Portugal. The match with Ukraine is postponed for June for political reasons, but considering the situation in that team, it's hard to expect them to join the fight for Poland. Out of these three, Hungary-Russia-Portugal, two teams will be picked, so the +5 from Portugal is really valuable.

- We've analyzed the World Championship and made conclusions. We're hoping to take the crucial step towards going to Poland now - Torgovanov said.

They'll play two matches against Hungary in the coming days, and lots has to be solved in those. Torgovanov won't be able to rely on the injured Gorbok and Atman, two very important players. The Russian team we'll be seeing will be quite different, without some players who played a big role in the past years, and the one that stands out is Igropulo who didn't get invited.

- We'll be watching him play at his club - Torgovanov said.

Another issues he has to deal with are the injuries by Derevenja and the goalie Sorokin, and Žitnjikov is questionable, too. Him not playing means the Russians lost the only play maker in the team. Eldar Nasirov is most likely to take that spot now.

- We lost key players in the back line - Torgovanov complained. His team will have a lot of problems against the tough Hungarian wall.

Unlike the Russians, the Hungarians watched the World Championship on TV. They got stuck against the Slovenians in the qualifications, and these qualifications were a beginning of a new era for them, without Lajos Mocsai. Talant Dujšebajev started in a good way, with two wins, but the Hungarians had a really hard time in the home match against Portugal. The final result of the second match suggests that it was much simpler against Ukraine. The Russians will be their biggest test so far.

- We're playing against a really dangerous opponent, and we didn't have a lot of time to get ready - Dujšebajev said.

They're playing this match only four days after Veszprem and Szeged faced each other in the Cup final, and Dujšebajev was playing the Cup final with Kielce against Wisla on Sunday. Lack of time to get ready is the biggest enemy for the Hungarians in the first match, and the Russians spent much more time together.

- The Cup final brought Peter Gulyas' injury, and he'll miss the match against Russia - Dujšebajev complained.

Except for Gulyas, all the other important links are there, including Nagy, Harsanyi, and Lekai, who missed the first two qualifying matches because of their injuries. Dujšebajev is aware how important these two matches are.

- With all the due respect to Ukraine and Portugal, it was clear after the lot that we and the Russians are the favorites of the group. The first place is really important, because neither of us secured the Olympic games yet, and the first place would give us a more favorable lot at the EC, where we can hunt the place in Rio.

Torgovanov definitely wants to start off with a win but I don't think that will happen. The Russians are without their top players (Igropulo, Gorbok, Atman, Zitnjikov is questionable) and that will cause struggle in the back line. Torgovanov changed the list compared to WC to leave only 6 players who were in Qatar on it. That means that collaboration between players might be a problem on the floor. But, most importantly, Russia are nowhere near Hungary quality-wise. The visitors are here with almost all their top players and with a clear goal. They want to win both games to secure the top spot in the group. Granted, they did have very little time to prepare but these players know and work with each other very well since the majority come from Veszprem and Szeged. I think there will be no problems regarding that. Russia will probably not be able to deal with the Hungarian defense - what Torgovanov has is not good enough and this should be a sure win for Hungariy unless they do horribly for some reason.
