Can Modena last on the top of the table?

Modena keep the leading position after eight rounds, which is surprising, but the tough part of the schedule is just coming, and it will show how good they really are

Even before the season started, everyone knew Modena have quality, but not many dared to claim they will be the ones leading the league by mid December. But that's what a look on the league table reveals, their winning streak couldn't be ended even against Novara - it was even a first defeat for Novara. If they didn't have a "black-out" in Montichiari, they'd have the max effect with points right now. 

- I'm really satisfied, we played the first two sets almost perfectly, I can't remember us making any big mistakes in that period. Maybe that's why we were arrogant in the third set, Novara used that and with a great offense, they got the game to the fourth set, but then we got back to the good things from the beginning and calmly ended the game. First place? It's a nice feeling to be on the top of the league table, we can only wish we stay there as long as possible - coach Alessandro Beltrami said after the last win. The opposite Samanta Fabris felt the same: 

- It's true Novara weren't their true self, but the biggest part of it goes to us, we were aggressive from the start and kept pressuring their defense. Now that we're on the leading position, it definitely won't be easy to stay there because difficult games come one after the other, but we won't just leave what we worked hard for this whole time to someone else. 

Before the away game in Treviso, Beltrami doesn't ignore the fact that everyone sees Modena differently now. 

- It's important to keep that hunger for the winning that got us where we are, we have to be aware that now, we're a team everyone will want to defeat, and with that in mind, we have to stay fully focused and keep ourselves in great form. We'll really need that approach against Conegliano, who are slowly stabilizing after the initial stumbles, and now win in continuity. The audience will be on their side tonight, as well. 

Conegliano were successful in the first game of the round of sixteen for CEV Cup, even though Maribor proved to be an opponent tougher than expected on Wednesday (the first and the third set 25-23), but they won all three sets in the end. But they forgot about that that same evening, and focused all of their attention to the event of the week. It's not often that the championship leader is coming to Treviso. 

- We know that the game against Modena will be tough, but we're still looking forward to it. When you play against the championship leader, you are extra motivated right away, and I expect my team to be up to the task and show character in front of the full arena. Of course, we don't ignore the fact that Modena are on the go, and their moral is really high, but we have to believe in ourselves and our abilities - coach Nicola Negro said. He pointed out the opponents' virtues: 

- Speed, and block and the defense being connected are Modena's strongest weapons, their game is pretty fluid in general, and that shows top individual quality. Our task is to mess their system, and the best way to do that is to impose the rhythm that suits us. 

The standard block Barazza's comeback will definitely help. She didn't play against Maribor because of the flu. This game's center figures should definitely be two best hitters of the league, Ozsoy for Conegliano (148 points so far), and Fabris for Modena (146).

Hats off to Modena for six wins in a row, and everything they did so far, but they're not a mega-team that will keep winning forever, especially in a league as evened out as the Italian. Their positive series has to end sooner or later, and the possibility that it will happen tonight in the away game against one of the direct rivals for the top of the league is definitely not to be ignored. The odds on Conegliano's win - I think they're better than Modena's, regardless of the current league table state - simply looks too good to be ignored, and against a team assembled for this season (Glass, De Gennaro, Adams, Ozsoy, Nikolova...), nobody can be a favorite in PalaVerde arena in front of 5 000 fans, even if they come to Treviso as current leader of the championship. The home team are progressing slowly, but steadily, and mostly win lately, getting closer to that form they had at the season beginning. In general, a logical way things to happen in the following weeks is that Conegliano start rising, and Modena start falling, and I think that will start happening with this game, so this bet is worth taking.
