Handball » World Championship (M), 2. round

Germany - Russia (27:26)

One more victory would get the Germans very close to one of two top spots

  • Published:

The Germans had the best possible revenge on the Polish for the defeat in the qualifiers, and can be optimistic about the rest of the competition. Russia did a modest job against the Saudi team, but even that was enough for a double digit victory against the inadequate opponent

The Germans arrived to this championship with a great desire to score big and get back among the elite of world handball. Beating Poland at its start will be a huge boost for Sigurdsson's team, and is also payback for the defeats they suffered in the qualifications. Germany expertly took advantage of all the mistakes Poland made, of which there were quite a few, took the lead in the second half of the first period and had a great reaction when Poland caught up in the second period.

Much was said about the German perimeter lineup and offense prior to this championship. Germany made an amazing 69% of their shots against Poland, largely due to poor defense on behalf of Poland. They were led by Weinhold with nine goals, his shots from behind the nine meter line are a great indicator for the rest of the competition and Germany will sure need the.

- We did not start well. Offensively we did well, but on defense not as much, we did not get the help we needed from Heinevetter. It took us about 15 minutes to stabilize our defense, and we managed to put together a 4 goal lead by halftime. When they caught up, we kept our focus and faith that we can win- said Weinhold, adding:

-It's important to win the first match and get over the initial nervousness. We need to win another match or two to get to the next stage, but our starting position is definitely much better now.

They are in a very tough group and cannot sleep on their laurels. Today Germany will face Russia, and a victory here would get them within a step from their goal, one of the top two positions in the group. The Germans will face a different challenge today, a faster team, but they've proven they can face such opponents too in the matches against Iceland.

- Ever since we drew them in our group I didn't have a good feeling about this match against Russia, they play modern handball. However, this is a 50/50 match, if we stay focused we'll have a good shot at scoring another victory- said Sigurdsson, who has great respect for Kulešov:

- They have a very, very good coach, one of the best in this generation. Russia have a good perspective in the coming years.

- They're certainly playing faster under this coach. Atman and Igropulo give them two very good perimeter players- said Kneer.

Russia left a very modest impression in their first match against Saudi Arabia. However, it's always hard to find motivation against such opponents in first games, especially if the other team is prone to play rough, aggressive handball. Russia played well for the last 20 minutes of the first half and took off too a safe lead. They routinely worked through the second half, scoring just 10 goals (conceding 8).

- This was a game against a not so strong team which we just wanted to win, and we did. We want to forget this past match, the more important ones are coming- said Kulešov, and commented on their next opponent:

- We're preparing for the game against Germany, which will be crucial for the group ranking. They've rejuvenated their team, but they have Bundesliga experience and are under Sigurdsson's tough leadership.

Russia made many mistakes against Saudi Arabia, but that game cannot be a benchmark. Kulešov distributed play-time well, with each player playing one half on many positions, nobody played more than 36 minutes or scored more than 4 goals. The lead with which they won against the Saudis was not important, what's coming is, and that's four games in six days. The game against Germany should give us a much better picture of their potential.

- They play very good, tactical handball. They show great commitment and are ambitious, they've mad ea step forward lately- commented Kulešov on their next opponent.

This margin is too high when Germany is involved. Sigurdsson brought lots of discipline to their game and the only time in nine games since he is leading that Germany went above this margin was the first one, against the Swiss, at 58 goals. Against quick Iceland in the preparation period they played at 55 and 49, and have still not conceded more than 26 goals, if we count in the preparation matches and their first game here against Poland. Germany had a 69% scoring rate in that game, Poland were at 62%, their goalies at under 20% saves, and the game still stayed under this margin. They'll hardly repeat such scoring, especially since they're rather limited on offense. The Russians slowed things down against the Saudis, with a 10-8 second half, and I don't expect them to run much today either. Kulešov largely calmed them down, and this is also an extremely important match. They mostly stayed under against tough 6-0 defenses in the European Championship (Serbia 52, Poland 46, Sweden 56), and I expect this to be another game at 50-55 goals.
