The Danes eager to make up for the first day

  • Published:

The Saudis have nothing to match except for aggressiveness, and their disastrous offense could bring lots of easy counter attack shots for the Danes

The Saudis were a huge outsider of this group even before the championship started, and the first match only confirmed that. Even though the Russians were far from their true selves, they easily celebrated by 10. The Saudis tried to play faster in the first 15 minutes, even pulled the fast center, and got a few goals that kept the difference smaller. However, when the game became transitional, all their realization problems surfaced up, and the difference kept growing. In the rest of the game, they didn't show much, the players were getting nervous, and that resulted with more aggressiveness (nine 2 minutes suspensions by the end).

- According to the statistics, it seems our team are the youngest in the championship. It's hard to play against teams like Russia. We came to the championship because another team gave up. However, at some moments, especially with the defense and the goalies, we played pretty well - coach Goran Džokić said.

The goalie Al-Nassafan was pretty good, had 13 saves in the end, and even saved a few sure hits. But even that didn't help. The Saudis are pretty weak offensively, and the Russians punished all their technical mistakes from the counter and semi counter attacks by the end of the first half-time. That could really be prominent today, because that's where the Danes are dangerous, and the Saudis have the bad luck of getting an extremely motivated opponent.

The favorites struggling at the beginning of big competitions is quite usual, but the favorites mostly manage to get out of the uncomfortable situations thanks to their strength. Denmark started the match against Argentina greatly, and when they were seven goals ahead by the end of the first half-time (13-6), it seemed they'll avoid the first match stress.

Still, the scenario was completely different in the rest of the match. Hansen and company were weak, and allowed Argentina to come back. Regardless, Denmark controlled everything, had 24-21 four minutes before the end, and it seemed they'll manage to finish the match. However, they didn't score any goals till the end, conceded three, and didn't manage to turn the last offense successful.

- I'm really disappointed, we didn't play well enough in the second half-time, and there are other things we have to analyze - Gudmudnsson had a reason to be critical.

The Danes showed lots of problems when facing a set defense. The Argentinians went deep into the main backs, and disrupted the Danish ball flow.

- The offense was really bad. We had lots of sending offs during the match, and it was tough, but we needed to solve the game at the beginning of the second half-time, when we were at 16-10, or 17-11. But, we missed too many chances - Gudmundsson added. Only Eggert scored over three goals (5/7), but he also missed two seven meter shots (1/3).

- The pressure was on us to be the first in the group, and we still can be. The pressure isn't bigger than it was before the tournament. Even if we won, we'd have to defeat the other four opponents, so there's no difference - Landin said. He had 10 saves against Argentina.

The game against Saudi Arabia will be the easiest one for Denmark, and it makes sense that Gudmundsson will rotate the lineup and save the leaders for much more important matches that will follow. However, considering their bad performance two days ago, they'll try to play for real, at least at the beginning. The Danes will try to get the win against the aggressive Saudis with as least wrestling and fighting as possible. They will base their game on the defense and fast counter attacks that could bring lots of easy goals.

- That's how things work. After one bad game, you're the biggest idiot on the planet. Luckily, we play every other day, so we have one day left to convince people we're playing well again - Mikkel Hansen said, and added:

- We have to have special energy on Sunday, and do our best. That should do it.

- The most important thing is to respond the right way - Gudmundsson said.

A high handicap, but I think it's worth it. Based on everything we've seen in the first three days, the Saudis are the weakest team of the competition. Their handball is getting worse, they're out of the top five teams in Asia, and they came here rejuvenated, with the youngest team here. They simply don't have anything to match their opponents, their offensive is disastrous, and defensively, they rely on being rough, and the referees won't tolerate that. They had 9 sending offs against the Russians, and only thanks to a very bad game by Russia, and a very good Saudi goalie who saved 4-5 sure hits, did they managed not to lose with a huge difference. They were much stronger two years ago, but still lost by 14 to Poland, 18 to Belarus, 10 to Slovenia and Serbia. Now, they're definitely 4-5 goals weaker, and the Danes will be extra motivated to make up for the bad game against Argentina. They should have and could have won by 6-7 goals difference then, but didn't do it. Today, their firm defense will be a big problem for the Saudi offensive, and their good wings will score lots of goals from the counter attacks. The Saudis are very bad in the defensive transition, and the question is how much will they even try when the difference grows. They will hardly score 20 goals, and the Danes can easily score 35 with the counter attacks. Denmark are a team ideal for crushing the weaker teams, especially today when they're motivated, and I expect the difference to be at least 15-20 goals.
