The winner will almost certainly avoid Real and Barca

This is one of the most important Euroleague matches for both teams; the Greeks will be missing Petway, while the Turks get less important Sipahi back. Oly have a 9-0 score at home in the Euroleague, Fener have 9-1 away

Today Olympiacos have the chance to take a big, perhaps even crucial step towards one of the two top positions in the group at the end of this stage, which would bring them the home court advantage in the quarterfinal and almost certainly steer them away from Real and Barcelona in the battle for the Final Four. The team from Piraeus are top ranked after nine rounds, with one win more than CSKA and Fenerbahce, their guest today. Since Oly already beat Fener in Turkey, a potential victory here would give them a two victory lead and a better mutual score, something almost impossible to catch up to in the remaining four rounds. The clash between Spanoulis and Obradović brings extra tension to this match, as their relations have been poor for a number of years now.

Olympiacos routinely beat Rethmyn on Monday, choking Skortopoulos' team with their defense in the second half and allowing them just 23 points, which could have been even lower had they not relaxed at the end. It's common knowledge that defense is the key to success in all Olympiacos games, with Sferopoulos and the players constantly insisting on that segments and pointing out that it gives the team confidence on offense as well. The same will be the case today as well, since Fenerbahce can be very dangerous on offense, and with the arrival of Zisis they improved the defensive part too, showing performances worthy of a Final Four contender.  The arena will be sold out, and one can expect a boiling atmosphere in one of the crucial Euroleague games so far this season. 

- This will be a very difficult match for us. Fenerbahce have the quality and many experienced players, so we'll have to be very cautious, especially on defense. I want the players to follow the plan we set out. This is not the finale, but it is a crucial game for us- said Sferopoulos.

The strategist for Olympiacos will once again be missing Petway, Tsiarelis,and Katsivelis, first of whom is most important. Mantzaris' injury is also a major issue, making his appearance uncertain.

We will see many interesting matchups, with Fener's odds largely depending on the work Zisis does against Spanoulis, the man organizing every possession for Olympiacos. On the other hand, Oly's defenders will have to defend well against Bogdanović, and especially Goudelock, who is impossible to stop once he gets into his series. We should see a major battle under the rim as well, where the physically strong inner lineup of the Greek team will have their hands full with Vesely and company.

- We want to stay on top and will do everything we can to achieve that. Fenerbahce will be highly motivated after their defeat against Galatasaray, they'll be looking for payback and will be aggressive. Goudelock is shooting very well and it's hard to stop him. Vesely gets rebounds well, all their players have quality and it's hard to single someone out- said Hunter.

In the first duel of these teams in Istanbul Fener had the game won for a very long time, but wasted their advantage with a terrible finish marked by turnovers and a three pointer by Spanoulis. Now is the right time to redeem themselves as they're coming here after losing to Galatasaray. Obradović rained fire and brimstone after that match, laying into the team during the press conference and calling them egoists with motivation issues.

Today this will not be a problem as a defeat in Piraeus guides them towards facing Real and Barcelona, who practically booked the top two positions in the other group with the victories they scored last night, making this match that more important.

- We're facing the top ranked team of the group, Olympiacos are playing good, tough basketball with a strong defense. They're the best defending team in the Euroleague, this will be a difficult game, but we'll do our best, naturally- said Željko Obradović.

The performance of his team against Galata was truly appalling, since their opponent played with a 6 man rotation and scored 92 points.

- We were terrible on defense.

There was another reason for that apart from the attitude of the players. Due to Kenan Sipahi's injury Obradović was forced to put in Hickman, which usually means a foreigner out, Žorić this time. With Žorić out, there is a problem in defending pick-and-roll situations, as Savas and Erden cannot do it. Today we'll see a different story, and also the main condition to parry the Greeks - defending pick'n'rolls, which Spanoulis executes perfectly.

- We're facing the best team in Europe right now, and have a big chance here. This will be a tough game, but we want to win it as it would put us in a position that leads to the top two spots. We have to play well and forget about our last defeat- said Nemanja Bjelica, who was demolished by Erceg the other day, but who will play a big role today against Printezis, even more so since Petway is out, and his performance will influence the outcome of the game.

Obradović will certainly match Zisis against Spanoulis, and the clash of the Greeks will be among the high points of the night, as will the entire game too.

The first duel of these teams in the Top 16 ended at 142, the preseason match at 129, though that is no benchmark here. They'll be playing in Greece now, in a far, far more important match and we have a high margin that I believe to be worth playing. Oly have the best defense in Europe, no point wasting time to elaborate on that, and that segment got even greater focus with the arrival of Sferopoulos. Players point out everything starts with defense, which gives them the confidence for offense, and they do prove their point on court. Fenerbahce are a team with great offensive potential, but have also gained a lot defensively with the arrival of Zisis. I believe that the match-ups in this game indicate an under, as Zisis is definitely capable of making things tough for Spanoulis, and when you do that Oly gets in trouble. Equally so, Oly have top of the line defense players capable of largely stifling Goudelock, and especially Bogdanović. Considering how important the match is, and that the losing team will have a hellish route to the Final Four, I don't believe this will be a pretty match, and I believe the winner will be decided by 70-75 points at most.
