Ivković: Top priority is improving defense

  • Published:

After a few defeats in a row, Efes are in a really tight spot. Novgorod on the other hand still have a chance to advance, and have a 2-1 score against Efes this season. Nenad Krstić might not play for the Turkish team

The neighborhood around Anadolu Efes is in serious crisis. Dušan Ivković is going through his worst period since he came to Turkey, his team lost three of their last four matches and nobody remembers the Cup they won any more. Defeats at Malaga and Moscow put a bit dent in their Euroleague plans, and a recent home loss to TED from Ankara, who arrived as the second-to-last team of the league, upset Ivković to such an extent that he smashed the drawing board he uses to sketch possession setups.

We played very poor defense and TED deserved to win. We've been having problems with defense for a few weeks now, and now we played the kind of defense we should not be playing at home. They had 64% shooting for two and 52% for three points- said Ivković angrily, also pointing out that they had three injured players, Furkan Korkmaz, Krstić and Lasme.

Korkmaz is off the roster due to an ankle injury, just like Krstić, whose ankle was injured in Moscow. According to the  info from the official Euroleague web pages neither of them will be playing today. We must stress that this was not officially confirmed by Efes, and the Euroleague web page is often wrong with such information. Here we might add that the Russian team's web pages also state that Krstić will not be playing and that Draper's appearance is in question, of which there are no information at all.

Lasme was on rotation on Monday too, he should not be in question.

This is an extremely important match for Efes, as their recent defeats jeopardized the quarterfinal for them. They are in 4th place along with Laboral and Kutxa (all at 4-6), but have better scores in comparison. Novgorod and Milan are just a victory behind them, which makes this match against the Russians a key game. Should they lose, Novgorod would have a 2-0 score against Efes. They already beat Efes twice before this season, scoring 109 in the last game. Fear is a powerful motivator, and Efes will leave nothing to chance.

We lost a few games where our defense was not at the required level, the level we want it to be. Our top priority is therefore to improve our defense- said the Serbian coach.

- Our defense was not doing well in Novgorod either, they have 2-1 against us this season, and this is a very important match for both teams. We have Krstić, Furkan and Lasme seriously injured, and we must play team basketball the best we can.

Matt Janning will be one of the players tasked with guarding Rochestie, although he became less of a threat with the arrival of Mekel and Trey Thompkins became a key player for Bagatskis. If Efes have any intention of playing proper, tought defense, then Draper, Janning, Perperoglou and Šarić have to give ti their best, with Šarić having the toughest task against Thompkins.

Last week's victory against Laboral kept Nizhny in play for the Euroleague quarterfinal. They are currently one victory behind Laboral and Efes, which is why this away match in Istanbul is so important. Nizhny won the first duel of these teams with a brilliant shooting night in which they loaded the usually granite defense of the home team with 109 points. A victory here would put them in a better position than the Turks, and they've already proven they can win at Istanbul, even without Rochestie and Mekel, who only came in later to strengthen the team.

We have to show character once again. We should not look at the results Efes lately had, this only makes things harder. Ivković's team will be even more angry because they lost at Novgorod. They have the quality to rise to the occasion- said Bagatskis.

Nizhny have good momentum after putting together three victories, last of which was in an away match in Finland. It was nothing flashy, and the weakened home team even had the chance to win, but Nizhny controlled the finish of the game better. It's definitely worth noting that Rochestie had a modest performance once again, with just 7 points and 3/12 shooting from the field, but the nine assists he passed out improve the impression. The rest of the team carried him, with Thompkins (22 pts, 6 rbs) and Parahouski (14 pts, 14 rbs) doing great work under the rim. Mekel did not impress either, (6pts, 2/9), but Kuksiks gave his best performance since his arrival in the team (16, 4/7 for three points).

That kind of a performance will not do if they wish to beat Efes once again, Rochestie and Mekel need to do more. Thompkins and Parahouski will have their hands full under the rim, in the previous game in Novgorod a few weeks ago they utterly dominated, scoring a combined 48 points and 16 rebounds. However, one gets the impression that Nizhny's odds to win mostly depend on the two point guards, as they're the ones who will have to impose the tempo they want.

- We already played one must-win game this season, now we have another. We faced Efes three times this season, we know each other well, and I think this will be a close, physical match- said Rochestie.

Their important American shooter Kinsey is still recovering from his injury, and might be back to play against Samara on Sunday.

A margin way too high in my opinion, probably influenced by the 200 point game played in Novgorod a few weeks ago. However, a game with such shooting percentages is unlikely to occur again, moreover, that will serve as an extra warning for Ivković and I feel it's much more likely that we'll se a match like the first two in the regular period of the league, which ended at 142 and 126 points. This is above all one of the key matches in the battle for the quarterfinal, Efes are in a very dangerous position and a defeat would put them very far behind the best eight. A defeat would practically mean goodbye to all hopes for Nizhny, as they have yet to face CSKA and Unicaja at home plus play an away game at Piraeus, meaning it would be unrealistic to expect them to win all three. Ivković said it all saying that his primary goal is to improve defense, an ailing segment in their past few games, and they will focus fully on that here. They can win only if they play proper, disciplined defense, as confirmed by the home match against Kutxa three weeks ago, which was also the only of their ten home games in European competition that went above this margin. Nizhny has slightly higher numbers, ranging close to this margin, but Rochestie pointed out this will be a close and physical match. Keeping in mind how important it is, I see no way for it to go over 160 points.
