Khimki - Valencia (76:61)

Van Rossom's injury might be crucial

  • Published:

Visitors just recorded a brilliant win over Barcelona, but the win came with a price - Valencia's key player got injured and winning without him today will be extremely difficult

Khimki were dominant in Valencia last week for some 30 minutes, had a 13-point lead, and got back home with a narrow one-point win only because of the bad finish. Kurtiniatis' team didn't do well against Valencia's zone defense, which resulted in only 11 points in the last quarter and a narrow win.

- First of all, I'm happy we won, that's much better than the 16-point deficit from last season. Of course, I'm not happy with the finish because we had a great lead and finished only one point ahead. We know Valencia are great both home and away and the next game starts at 0-0 - Kurtinaitis said after the first game.

Khimi's coach knows that everything is still possible, just like it was against Zenit. Who ever wins today's game will advance through to the next stage. The Russians are definitely confident with the fact they are undefeated home this season. This will be another great test for them, especially since they lost all the important games last season. Their motivation is to run even higher because Valencia knocked them out last season. Khimki won home by 15 points, but that wasn't enough to make up for the deficit from Spain. The situation for them is much better now.

- We practiced attacking against zone defense that caused us trouble in the first game. I watched the first game once again and I can say that there's a lot of things we can do better. The opponents have a lot of energy and we'll have to have a response for that. We are playing home, which normally means we have more energy and play better. We need to play like a team - Kurtiniatis said.

- Augustine knows that Valencia are in high spirits after winning the derby match last weekend:

- They boosted their confidence after the convincing win over Barcelona but we trust in our capability. We we have to do our very best to win. They have particularly dangerous guards and they will cause you problems if you give them room and let them find rhythm. The most important thing is that we defend well and play like a team.

Valencia did a great job in the first game even though that might not seem so since they lost. But, they managed to make up for a huge deficit in the last quarter to travel with Russia with hope:

- We know we need a 2-point win and I'm sure my team can reach that. Khimki are powerful and playing home, lead by a point guard who won Euroleague single-handedly last season - Duran said.

The point guard in question is Rice, who dominated the first game with 27 points and 5 assists. Valencia need to stop him at any cost in order to record a win. Last year in Euroleague final, Laso put Darden to defend Rice for a while and that worked perfectly but Real lost the final later on after Laso put Llull and Rodriguez back to guard Rice. We now have to wait and see whether Duran will go with Sato against Rice, which would definitely be the logical thing to do.

Valencia confirmed good form and quality last weekend when they crushed the mighty Barcelona by 20 points last weekend. Valencia were impeccable on the offensive end, with Pablo Aguilar standing out in that game. He might be Valencia's surprise factor for this match too:

- This is the final for us. We now we're in for a complicated game but if we play defense at the right level for 40 minutes, we can win. We stand a chance if we play with proper intensity - the power forward concluded.

Valencia certainly stand a chance, but how big a chance? It definitely got much slimmer after it became obvious Sam Van Rosson, their key player, will miss the game with an injury. Game organization and efficiency will be a great problem for Valencia without him. Krešo Lončar is questionable as well, but there's some chance he'll play. Liscuk is out from before.

Khimki are excellent in home matches this season. Of course, if we don't count the Russian Cup in which only Russian players are allowed to perform. In front of their fans they crushed mighty teams: UNICS, Lokomotiv and CSKA. In only three matches they didn't cover this handicap. After last season's experiences, Khimki are even more hungry for trophies this season and today they will have a special motive against a team who threw them out of this competition last year. However, Khimki beat them at home with 15, considering that it was even 21 in the minute before the last. This season Khimki are even stronger, more played in, while Valenica are weaker if you ask me. Those weaknesses showed in away matches, and although it's the end of Match, Valenica have no wins outside of their home court, except for the one against Bayern. They've already been to Russia this season, lost with -12 against Lokomotiv. Khimki are at least equally good, they play better in front of their fans, and in this match they don't have the right to fail. In the first match about a week ago they dominated, it should've been with a double-digit difference, but they didn't find their way around Valencia's zone defense. Today there won't be such tactical surprises and quality differences will be visible. Besides, Valencia are without Van Rossom, which is a huge minus for them. This margin doesn't allow any kind of relaxation in the finish, and I expect Khimki's double-digit win.
