Oly still without Spanoulis, Nizhny without Rochestie and Kinsey

The game has no result imperative, because Oly secured the quarterfinals with their third position, while Niznhy already lost all their chances. However, this is the last test for the Greeks before their probable clashes against Barcelona, while Nizhny are already concentrating on their important home game against Zenit in two days

One of the rare irrelevant games of the final round will be played in Piraeus. Olympiacos are definitely advancing to the quarterfinal from the third position, while Nizhny lost any chance for that some time ago. With all this in mind, this game has no result importance, and it will be marked by absence of some of the best players, Spanoulis on one side, and Rochestie and Kinsey on the other one.

Olympiacos played their last game a week ago in Moscow and in a clash against CSKA they lost the home court advantage for the quarterfinal. The road to Final Four will be difficult, and it probably leads through Catalonian Barcelona and Oly will have their work cut out for them. CSKA were the better team last Friday, they were in the lead from start to finish, even though weakened Olympiacos (without Spanoulis and Petway) were a tough nut to crack and didn’t surrender until the very end. They managed to impose their rhythm, strong defense, but it wasn’t enough to succeed. 

- Rebounds were very important today. We allowed them to make 19 offensive rebounds and a lot of points from other attacks - said Sferopoulos.

Olympiacos are having bad luck with injuries in this important part of the season, so even today they cannot count on Spanoulis and less important Tsairelis, but also Hunter, who injured himself on a practice during the week. Their absence from today’s game will not be very important, but it is important that they recover in time for the quarterfinal matches. Good news for Sferopoulos is Petway’s comeback.

- We managed to partially compensate for Spanoulis’s absence in the last few games. We don’t know if he’ll be ready for the first quarterfinal game, but he is in the final stage of recovery. Hunter’s absence is important, but we have players that can bring solutions. Petway is in good condition and he will be ready to play. 

Regardless of the fact that this game cannot change anything regarding the ranking, Sferopoulos wants a good game and a victory. Olympiacos are in a part of the season with a three week break in the championship, so this game is his last chance test before the quarterfinal. 

- We want to conclude this round with a win and we are going into this game as if it was the playoff. We want to work on some details in our game and remain concentrated - Sferopoulos said. 

Oly already defeated Nizhny in their first game this season. Even the Russians are having problems with absences, even bigger than the Greeks, because they will have trouble compensating for absence of both Rochestie and Kinsey, especially against one of the best defenses in Europe. Nizhny were long ago written off from the battle for the first four positions in the group and their home game against Zenit is much more important for them right now, because it could bring about a lot of answers in the battle for the fourth position and the home court advantage in the quarterfinal of the VTB league. 

- We’re focused on our game against Zenit, but we didn’t come here just like that. We have players who have been training hard and are hungry for official games - Bagatskis said.

The very fact that Rochestie and Kinsey stayed in Novogorod tells a lot about their priorities at this time. Nizhny also lost their last game in Moscow and were, similarly as Olympiacos, unable to do anything other than provide solid resistance. Kinsey and Rochestie were their best individuals with 37 points all together, almost half of the whole team, and they were the only ones to spend over 30 minutes on the court. 

Without them, Mekel should be holding greater responsibility, as well as their centers, Thompkins and Parahouski, who was one of the best individuals in the first game with 25 points and 11 rebounds. However, the effects of this trio will depend on the course of the game and the amount of time they play, and whether or not Bagatskis will decide to the use Russian players more. Zenit is on their schedule less than 48 hours after this game, and the trip from Piraeus to Novogorod is very long…

The decision to leave two top players in Novgorod makes it very clear what Bagatski's priority is at the moment. That's only logical because the game with Zenit will probably be the key one in the race for home court advantage in VTB league QFs. Since they meet Zenit in only two days, I wouldn't be surprised if Parahouski and Thompkins spend less time in the game today. Oly are still without Spanoulis but they already got used to playing without him. Olypmiacos are safe in spot three and this game is not relevant to their either. That is the only reason I'm going with smaller stakes even though I'm sure they'll take this game much more seriously. The coach said it's like playoffs for them and he will not allow his players to take it lightly. This is the last check they'll have before the clashed with Barcelona and finally, they are playing home, which is why they want to win. Even if the coach starts making changes, he's got 10 equality good players to count on, which is not the case at Nizhny. Without two top players who combine 33 points on average Nizhny's game loses quality. They will not be able to stand to Oly like that. Oly are tough enough to stand up even to those top players in the key. I'm going with smaller stake only because this is an insignificant game result-wise even though I'm pretty sure Oly will take it very seriously to record a double-digit win.
