Even though Barcelona won all 4 head-to-head games over the past 2 years convincingly, everyone expects a tough fight of two top European defenses today

Barcelona are to start the quarterfinal series against Olympiacos after a defeat in El Classico, which this time, did almost nothing to cause upset for the Catalan team. The situation in the Spanish championship is more of less settled and that was one of the very few derby matches that was not crucial to anything. Barcelona are, that game not included, on a 5-game winning streak and their form is definitely at its peak now. 

- We in a good shape and ready for this series. Physical and mental toughness are crucial in quarterfinals. This is a clash between two Top 5 European teams. Olympiacos forces you into playing perfectly in order to win - coach Pascual said ahead of this game.

Realistically, this is by far the closest QFs clash and definitely the meeting of two teams that both deserve to be in Final Four given their quality. However, one team will be knocked out in QFs and judging by the head-to-head games from the last 2 seasons, Barcelona are much closer to getting through. They won all 4 matches convincingly, even though Pascual doesn't want to go back to that:

- That's in the past and not relevant for this series. We'll let people who do stats to deal with that.

They won't have a lot to say here, according to Pascual, as he believes that defenses will dominate here since they are the strong suit of both teams, Olympiacos especially:

- They are very patient and play the best Euroleague defense because of the long attacks and massive physical strength in defense. We need to be aware that getting each point will be hard work.

He didn't have to say anything else. It is very clear that Barcelona's defense will be focused on Spanoulis, who is to make a comeback after recovering from an injury. 

- He's a great player and almost all of their attacks go through him. It's very clear that a great deal of our effort will go into stopping him - Pascual said.

On the other hand, Barcelona's centers are expected to make a great contribution since they are much taller than Olymiacos's center line, despite maybe being physically inferior. Still, Tomic and Pleiss should be dominant and Doellman will pitch in as well, after recovering from an injury.

- Doellman is doing better, he did almost the entire practice sessions yesterday and I'm very optimistic about his performance - Pascual said.

Oleson and Satoranski are two great defense players who will make life very difficult for Spanoulis today. If they manage managed to stop his creativity and Olympiacos' brilliant pick and roll as thy did the over the past two years, Barcelona will have the upper hand for sure. Barca do not agree with Olympiacos at all and that might be the key to this series.

The most important thing for Olympiacos is that Spanoulis and Hunter went to Barcelona with the rest of the team. It has yet not been confirmed that they will play today, though. The driving force at the Greek team has been out for the past few weeks in order to prepare for Barcelona as good as possible. This is the peak of the European basketball season and Olympaicos need to stay top level not if they want to make it into Final Four. The odds for those two to be in the game today are quite good.

- They are ready and we'll make the final decision in the last practice session - Sferopoulos said.

Barcelona will be a great test for Olympiacos. The Greek team were stopped by a Spanish team at this stage last year (Real) after winning both home games and losing all three away. Olympiacos do not have the home court advantage once again and Sferopoulos knows how important it would be to win at least one of the first two games.

- We proved that we can play tough road games well. We need to stick to our plan and show massive dedication.

Olympiacos have been relying on defense in particular in away games this season and given the importance of this one, things should be the same today. The goal is to slow down the pace, suffocate Barcelona's game through defense, and try and make this an unproductive game to get a chance of winning.

- We need to be dedicated to defense, our plan and what we have been working on for the past few months. It doesn't matter if Barcelona suit us or not, we are aware of our potential and we believe in ourselves - Olmpiacos' coach said.

- Controlling the pace and defensive rebound is the most important thing here. We struggled a lot with that in the previous games - Sloukas said.

It's quite clear that a lot will depend on whether Spanoulis and Hunter will be able to help. As it seems, they are more likely to play but it is also not very realistic Olympaicos will take any chances if they are not competely fit and ready. It will be a long series and losing either one of them today would be a huge problem.

What Pascual said describes best what we should see today. Barcelona's home Euroleague games mostly finished under this margin this season but things should be very different today. The stakes are extremely high, it's the first game of the QF series and they are set to meet the top Euroleague defense today. Olympiacos are even more focused on defense away, limiting the mighty CSKA to only 76 points recently. They will use the same strategy today. With or without Spanouis, I expect them to struggle against Barcelona, who have two great defense players Oleson and Satoranski. I think this is the game in which both teams will struggle to go over 75 points. It's the start of the series and this should turn into the war of defensive ends.
