CSKA Moscow - Olympiacos (68:70)

Oly know their chances increase in a less productive game

  • Published:

Both teams won one head-to-head this season, in which CSKA were limited to 76 points. The Moscow-based team will try and do well in defense as well in order to get as man free points as possibly through transition

Four teams they displayed the best game so far in the season reached the Euroleague Final Four in Madrid. Barcelona are the only team that is also very close quality-wise but Olympiacos beat them in a brilliant quarterfinal series and Catalans didn't make it into the Final Four. This will be the 3rd head-to-head game between CSKA and Olympiacos in the season. The met in Top 16 and each team won home. This meeting is taking place on neutral grounds and both opponents will try and get a shot at joining the battle for the trophy on Sunday.

CSKA have been doing best all season long and even though the Final Four is taking place in Madrid, many see the Russian team as the greatest favorite for the title. Previous seasons were not very different and CSKA never managed to handle the pressure of high expectations. Still, this team lead by Itoudis seems much better. They are complete at each and every position and will be very difficult to defeat. This will be the 12th Final Four in the last 13 seasons for CSKA, which is simply an impressive achievement.

- This semifinal is the final for us - Itoudis said and added:

- In spite of the injury-struggles, we managed to follow our game philosophy, we were winning and gained confidence. Kiriljenko joined and gave the team a new dimension.

CSKA beat Astana in the last games to advance through to VTB league semifinals. That was only a preparation for what follows this weekend. Olympiacos will be a tough opponent and CSKA will be very motivated by the fact Olympiacos prevented them from claiming the title in 2012 and 2013.

- If we're going to play like we have all season long, we will hope for the trophy - Teodosic said. He knows his team will not have it easy today:

- Olympiacos are a great team and it won't be easy to play them.

Both head-to-head games of the season were about tough defensive ends. Even though CSKA are mostly regarded as a great offense, they proved over the course of the season that they are more than capable of playing very good defense.

- They are very tough and play a very physical game. We cannot allow them to do that, we need to respond to their intensity - Hines said.

Voroncevic thinks defense will be an important factor as well as it would create opportunities for free points from transition.

- We need to play very good defense and stop their key players like Spanoulis and Printezis, even though they have other great shooters as well. We need to play a team defense and run when an opportunity presents itself.

CSKA will be complete today as Kiriljenko recovered from an injury. His comeback makes the team much more diverse.

- It's very different to play with Kiriljenko and without him. He gives a lot especially in defense and rebounding - Weems said.

- We can do different things when he's on the floor. We can play with a taller starting five but also with a very fast five. We have a possibility to change and adapt to what the opponents are doing - Kaun said.

Ever since they won in the great Greek derby to secure top spot ahead of the playoffs, Olympiacos are completely focused on this Final Four. The Greek team was the only one without the home court advantage in the quarterfinals and Barcelona played the role of the favorite. Oly are a bit of an underdog here as well but that is the role they are most comfortable in and the one in which they won two straight titles.

It is very clear Olympiaocs's success will rely on Spanoulis to a great extent. Spanoulis's been in great form, as he himself confirmed in an interview a few days ago. Interestingly, his wife and him are expecting a new baby and in the last three Final Fours when his wife was also pregnant (2009 with Panathinaikos, 2012 and 2013 with Oly), Spanoulis had been elected Euroleague MVP and won the titles...

- I am playing the best game of my carrier, which is why I can say this is my best season - Spanoulis said. He has not been not injury free this season either but he is fully fit ahead of the Final Four.

Olympiacos have some top-level players, there is no doubt about it but their greatest strength is team spirit.

- We have a great chemistry. Every players knows his roles and know what to do on the floor - Spanoulis said.

CSKA have the most powerful offensive end in Europe and Olympaicos obvious need to make this a less productive game in order to increase their chances. They limited CSKA to 76 points in each of the previous head-to-head games of the season and stayed very close until the very end even in that defeat in Moscow, despite having to do without Spanoulis. The most important thing for Olympiacos is that they are complete.

- Tactically, it is crucial that we enforce the kind of game style that suits us - Sferopoulos said and Lafayette agreed:

- We'll stand a great chance if we manage to make this a less productive game, while CSKA stand a better chance in a more efficient game.

A few players will play the key roles here, but De Cole and Tedosic on the one hand and Spanoulis on the other one will be in the spotlight (or their efficiency). Both teams have a few great defense players who will also play an important role. The gretest battles will take place on the perimeter and in the paint. CSKA gave a lot of different solutions and the upper hand in height, but Olympiacos' centers make up for that through assertions and great rebounding, which is exactly what saw them neutralize that advantage for CSKA in the previous games. Control of CSKA's rebound and transition will be very important aspects in Olympiacos' bid to win.

A low margin, but in my opinion, it has value. There probably isn't another team in Europe that has the width in the power forward position like CSKA. Itoudis can rotate Vorontsevich, Kirilenko, Khryapa, Nichols and Hines in that position. If we look at Hines' average per game, he is on 6.4 in the VTB League, 6.9 in the Euroleague, but these numbers would be smaller if CSKA had this much width from the start of the season. Khryapa missed a number of games because of an injury, Kirilenko joined the team in the second part, he also missed some of the last games, but they are both ready now and I think they will have a very important role in this game. With Vorontsevich and Kaun, I don't see a lot of room for Hines. Hines played 15 minutes on average throughout the season, and I expect to see him in an even more subordinate role today. Olympiacos know him well, they will try to impose their slow pace, which also goes in favor of this bet. Hines scored 12 points in their first head-to-head game, but CSKA played without Kirilenko and Khryapa then, and Kaun played for only 10 minutes. The second match is more relevant for me, in it Kirilenko, Vorontsevich and Kaun played for 20-25 minutes, Khryapa was just coming back from an injury (three minutes), and Hines played nine minutes in these circumstances and hadn't scored from the floor. I expect a similar situation today as well, Hines should have a smaller role and contribute more in the rebounds than in the efficiency. Even when he does play, CSKA have a lot of great shooters in the outside positions (Teodosic, de Colo, Weems...) and I doubt that this will be a game in which a lot of actions will be created for him.
