Borna Coric - Andy Murray (3:6 0:6 3:6)

A Classic Duel between David and Goliath, in which a Sling Is not Going to Suffice

  • Published:

Murray does not like clay and that is no secret. However, despite Coric's great talent, as well as the streak of 17 consecutive wins, it is hard to expect that he can do something against the third best player in the world

It is not a great secret that Andy Murray does not like clay. Even less so is the fact that the Briton trained on it for a period in his youth. However, it is clear that it is the surface that suits him the least, and he has never truly adapted to it. There are many things which speak in favor of that. Since the seasons of previous years up to the complete ignoring of this year's Roland Garros.

Due to that, there has actually been word from the start that the Croatian national team could choose Umag for hosting. After all, other British players are in any case tennis players who prefer a faster surface, so such thinking was logical. Especially since the clay in Umag is considered to be one of the slowest.

- I  think that this is the best surface we could have chosen, but how much of an advantage it is going to be and what kind of a difference it will make is hard to say - said Zeljko Krajan, Davis Cup captain

However, it is completely clear that the third best player in the World is a strong link in Great Britain's chain. A great weight has been lifted from Andy Murray's shoulders when he triumphed at Wimbledon, and the result of his earlier defeat at US Open was early arrival in Umag and better preparations for the conditions, surface and everything that comes with it. The Briton arrived in Croatia on Sunday afternoon and already after an hour he was on a court.

- I did not play much, nor have I been successful on clay, but I already feel good here. No one from the team favors clay, but the atmosphere is great and we are  really looking forward to matches - admitted Murray and added:

- It's been a while since I last  played in the Davis Cup and I'm glad that I'm back with the boys. I played a lot more when I was younger. We all came early to Umag, some of us on Saturday, and some, I among them, on Sunday so that we can adapt to the conditions.

During his career, Andy played three Davis Cup matches on clay. The year before the last, he was successful against Ukrainians and, interestingly, the only defeat  he experienced on that surface during that competition was against Stan Wawrinka - the player who beat him at this year's U.S. Open. His playing in New York is one big mystery and the display of everything he has done wrong in the past.

The Briton was too defensive and got trapped in Wawrinka's playing style, who played well. However, the frustrated Andy did not do anything that would end the domination of the Swiss. It is unlikely that something like that will repeat itself in today's match.

Due to Cilic's exhibitions with banned substances, apart from himself, he also let down Croatia. Everything landed on the shoulders of Ivan Dodig... and Borna Coric, at least on the first day. The young Croatian returned to his homeland with a fresh title of junior US Open conqueror. However, he was also surprised by the invitation to the Davis Cup team.

- I did not expect that, and was overjoyed when the coach invited me. If he tells me to play, I'll play. If he tells me to carry the water, I'll carry it - said Coric.

Many considered that a suicidal move. However, it is clear that anyone on the other side of the net against Murray would be a genuine underdog. That is clear to Krajan as well. This could be a chance that is given and an investment in future, and also a way to provide Veic with rest because he could play the key role against Evans. That is what Krajan thought also.

- I think Borna earned his chance to play. The results he achieved recently are the reason why I chose this. I think Antonio Veic could be in for the last day. We will see how things turn out - said the coach

This will be a classic fight between David and Goliath.  Despite the fact that Murray does not like clay, it is delusional to expect that a 16 year-old could give him a lot of trouble. Yes, Borna played a good match this year in Umag against Horacio Zeballos. However, this is a completely new dimension of play, and in this story the sling will not do David any good; only a rifle might, and Coric is aware of that.

- Of course I'm excited. This is a good chance for me to present myself at my best and play a good match. I have never trained with him; not even in London, where I train often. I like his playing style; I've watched his matches - said Borna and concluded:

- I expect to win in three sets

What can motivate the Croatian at least a little is his winning streak that started in early August. Namely, since then he has won two futures and triumphed in New York. It is a steak of 17 wins.

- I will give my all not to end that winning streak. If i did not believe in winning at least one bit, I would not even go out on the court - said Borna and admitted:

- I think that the only way I can win is if he gets injured. I have never played a 3-set match before.  However, it is a great honor to be a part of the national team, which was my dream since I was eight years old and watched the Davis Cup in 2005.

However, as Dodig himself said during the lot: Croatia's chance is not in the duels against the two-time Grand Slam winner. The key match is likely to be played as doubles, and the majority agrees with that. Murray himself is not actually familiar with the qualities of his opponent, what he did not fail to point out after the lot.

- I've never watched him, I know he trains in London. I know nothing about him - said Murray.

With all credit to young Borna, this is a level of tennis he hasn't experienced yet in his career. Regardless of Murray's aversion to clay, the Briton has arrived to Umag already on Sunday to prepare for this tie. This means we have a motivated world number 3 against a 16-year-old boy. Coric has undoubtedly a nice career ahead of him, but the difference between juniors' and men's tennis is enormous, even more so when we have a player of Murray's quality. In my opinion, winning two games per set would be a success for the Croatian player. Simply put, I don't think he's ready for this level yet, and Murray will win as convincingly as possible. Noone is keen on staying on the court longer than necessary. Intensity, stroke power, physique - these are at much higher level in men, especially with a player like Murray, so taking the under here seems a good bet.
