Kerber's head-to-head record is better, but their last two meetings were very close

Venus recorded two wins in Stanford last week, both in straight sets. She did a very strange match with Petkovic, but Petkovic said that when playing the Williams sisters, you don't have control anyway since their shots are so powerful, always keeping you on your toes. Venus lost a set against Pavlyuchenkova in the first match here after she failed to use her chances early in the second set. The second round match was an easier task, but Venus didn't open it well.

She had to win back her service games twice, allowing the opponent a total of seven break points. She lost 20 of her service points, but she was lucky that opponent's shots weren't strong enough, which was crucial for the outcome of the match. Venus managed to win the first set in the end, and did the second one better. Her service started working right, allowing her to record a win in the end. 

Kerber played Serena in the Stanford final last week. She had two set points in the first set, but couldn't use them. She was happy with her result at that tournament regardless. But, she opened her first match here (against Garcia) horribly. Having made four double faults in her first service game, she allowed Garcia to get into a 3-0 lead. Kerber didn't have the right pace, she was constantly late to take the shots, and she missed on all kinds of chances. But, as soon as her pace improved, Garcia didn't stand a chance.

Kerber was much more consistent following the struggle in the beginning, which decided the match. As the match advanced, Kerber's game improved, her service started working and in the end, and she recorded a well-deserved win.

Kerber is currently more successful when it comes to their head to head matches. Venus and she met four times, and Kerber won three matches. Venus won their only meeting seven years ago. But, the last to matches were particularly tough. The last one took place at US Open two years ago. Kerber is tough and consistent, but Venus had the kind of power that can put a lot of pressure of Kerber. We are in for another very close match between these two players
