Sabine Lisicki - Carla Suarez Navarro (3:6 6:3 6:7)

Lisicki will be with her shield - or on it once again

  • Published:

It's obvious Lisicki won't give up on tennis, whatever happened. She was eliminated in the first round of Brisbane, after leaving her opponent without a game in the first set. She washed the bitter taste off in the doubles, while Suarez was in a dangerous spot against Lučić last week, and lost her chances against Sharapova

The German Lisicki was always a player you wouldn't want to see across the net on her good day. She's one of the strongest players on the Tour, and a player who decides the match outcome in most cases. Many would say, with her shield, or on it. Her ups and downs during the matches are sometimes really hard to describe, and inconsistency and Lisicki often come in the same sentence.

Many tried to tame that inconsistency, tried to reduce a number of errors, but many times we saw that changes require efforts Lisicki was never ready to make. Between the built up point, so two or three well measured hits by the corners, or winners, Lisicki will always pick the latter. She almost got to Top 10 two years ago, and then ended that same season barely in the Top 40, which tells you all you need to know about her oscillations.

She started the season in Brisbane, faced Shvedova right at the beginning. Shvedova played the qualifiers, which is always a bit of advantage. But, Lisicki started strongly, won the first set without losing a game, but ended up losing that match. Her return was bad, obviously still a weakness of hers. Shvedova used her chances, got only one break chance in the third set, but that one proved to be crucial in a difficult, open match.

Lisicki washed out the bitter taste of elimination partially thanks to the title in the doubles. Hingis and she didn't lose one set on their way to the title, and Lisicki said thrilled afterwards:

- A great team and a great beginning of the year.

Suarez showed how important a consistency of the game and results is last year. She had over 50 wins, for the second time in her career, and never got eliminated in the first round. You can hardly find a player more consistent on the Tour, especially when Suarez faces players weaker than herself, that is, lower ranked players. She was like that last year, too. She had no problems with Top players, and she always loses against those, but keeps her ranking and works hard to collect wins against everyone else.

Judging by the start of the new season, Suarez won't show anything new. She defeated Pironkova when Pironkova lost strength, Lučić had 4-2 in the third set but lost all with her typical move for all or nothing. A match against Sharapova really showed the Spaniard's powerlessness.

- Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. A great beginning of the season in Brisbane - Suarez pointed out after being eliminated in the quarterfinal.

Suarez made Sharapova struggle last year, defeated her once, resisted well in the Beijing second round. But Sharapova is a player who remembers, doesn't forget, and she's especially focused against players who defeated her in the past. She showed it in Brisbane, she's been on fire the whole tournament, and Suarez ended that match with only five winners, compared to 32 by Sharapova.

Last week, Suarez could feel what she would face today. She won the match against Lučić, even though we should point out that moment in the third set when she was behind, when Sharapova blew her off the court. Lisicki is on the same level of aggressiveness as these two, and is more similar to Lučić. Both Lisicki and Lučić always had problems with the consistency, but if the German has a good day, Suarez will be at sixes and sevens.

The whole match is set to 50-50, so drama is expected. This is actually a default bet, both on Lisicki and Suarez. Lisicki played three sets at the beginning of the season, Suarez faced Pironkova and Lučić. The latter match is a sign of what we can expect today. On one hand an aggressive game, a strong serve (Lisicki), and on the other firm Suarez who can serve at awkward angles and confuse the German. The only match these two played against each other went to three sets, I don't think either one is able to easily win this one. I'm actually more convinced that this match will be full of ups and downs, where each of the players will have good phases on the court.
