First Vienna 1894 - Mattersburg (3:1)

Tatar again looking for luck in Vienna

  • Published:

Alfred Tatar led First Vienna for three years, and then this summer moved to Mattersburg, where things are not going according to his plans for now. He clearly has to win against his former club

The ninth placed First Vienna did not expect too much from the last round and the game against the leading Altach, where it was smoothly defeated 1-4, and today in Vienna it will host the biggest disappointment in the league, Mattersburg, who can not seem to connect two or more good results in a row.

The Viennese are aware that the last season's first-league team, despite its inconsistencies, still have serious ambitions, and are expecting a challenging game, but at home they do not even think to surrender in advance. An additional motive for most home players will also be the coach Alfred Tatar, who led them until this summer when, after three years in Vienna, he moved to Mattersburg and so far has not won there.

- We've countered Altach in the first half, and managed to tie the score, but the host's pressure in the second half was too strong and we could not resist. It is not strange, though Altach is a better team and we have nothing to complain about. All our focus is immediately transferred to the match with Mattersburg - explains strategist of First Vienna Kurt Garger, who will have an additional four players that he didn't have in the previous game, all of them important standard first-team players.

There recovered an experienced defender Staniša Nikolic, midfielder Paul Bichelhuber and striker Florian Zellhofer (two goals in 10 appearances), and the midfielder Vasil Kuleski finished a suspension due to the yellow cards. The striker Dominik Rotter has been injured, and in eight appearances he has not scored, and the standard stopper Andrei Lebedev has yellow cards.

- Mattersburg have not given up the thought of returning to the highest rank and its poor performances on tour can not fool us. This is a very good team led by a former coach of our club and we will have to provide the maximum for a positive result. I expect from my players a great fighting spirit and the race that we will not allow the guests to lead the game in Vienna - said the helmsman of First Vienna Kurt Garger, who took over the team after the third round defeat in Mattersburg 0-3, and in the next eight games he won excellent 13 points. With the penalties, Vienna has 10 points and is located in a place that ultimately brings the qualifications to stay in the league.

Mattersburg have not received three goals at the last game as before, but has once left the stadium defeated in Sankt Pölten. For a long time, it was a tough and equal match that went towards the final 0-0. But then in the 89th minute flashed a terrible blow by Dober with an external kick from almost 30 meters and the ball like a bullet hit the Mattersburg's right fork. It doesn't have to be mentioned how sad they were in Mattersburg because of the way they lost the game, and coach Alfred Tatar blames everything to the insufficient aggressiveness of his attackers.

- In our matches away we look confused and do not believe in our own strength. First, we received too many goals in the previous away games, and then in St. Pölten we were not dangerous enough. So in a game that was supposed to finish 0-0, in the final we received a rarely seen goal. We have in that game still made a small step in the right direction, but in the future our game should be similar to that on our stadium, when we start offensively and create good actions. If we want to move towards the top, we have to start to win points away - says Mattersburg's coach Alfred Tatar, who will today for the first time be a guest at the stadium where in the last years he was a hero, managing with small funds and modest personnel to maintain First Vienna in the second league.

- Of course I know some of the players in Vienna, but we can't rely on it because many things can not be predicted, such as goal by Dober in St. Pölten. I hope we can play defense as well as in St. Pölten, and as I have already said about the attack, we have to give more, be brave and take the risk because I believe that we have better players than the host. However, everything has to be proven on the field and we have to score points - concluded coach Tatar. In his combinations for the line-up, there is no left back Lukas Rath.

The duel of former teacher and student is always very interesting and motivational on both sides, and the coach of Mattersburg Alfred Tatar will be in the focus today. He came from First Vienna to Mattersburg this summer with the task of returning the last season first league team back to the elite rank. At Mattersburg they expected that task to be much easier than it has showed to be so far but the championship is long and even the 10 points behind the leading Altach can be made up for if Mattersburg would start playing according to the quality of players they possess.
But their waking up needs to arrive urgently, already today in Vienna because the amount of fails has been too much so far. Mattersburg can say goodbye to the race for the first place if they continue losing away against weaker rivals. The coach Tatar is quite aware of that and there is no better chance for him to go back to winning than against the club he knows perfectly because he was leading them three years and made the most out of the limited squad. Nothing changed to better in the financially challenged First Vienna since his departure. On the contrary, he took away their best player and scorer Marcus Pink in the last days of the transfer window and today he will lead the offense of Mattersburg.
Tatar has clearly stated in the preview that his team has to play more aggressively in away match, they need to attack and seek not a point but all three. There is no reason not to believe in the plans of the away team and it is doubtful that the home team has the quality to defend themselves. Their main center back Lebedev is out because of accumulated cards, three players are back after being injured and their readiness is questionable and the first striker Rotter is also missing. The hardworking team which has no individuals to decide the match will rely on running and fighting and that is often not enough against the better and maximally motivated opponent.
Mattersburg is definitely a better team on all positions and they proved that by winning 3-0 in their first head-to-head match and the only thing to worry about are the bad moments of the defense and easily conceded goals. But Mattersburg knows how to play for a goal more and they won their only away victory in Horn by turning the 0-3 result to 4-3. Vienna won three times in five home matches but they lost against the leading Altcah and Kapfenberg which are serious teams as Mattersburg should be as well.
We don't think the away team will win this one easily but the coach Tatar is in a do-or-die situation as he has basically the strongest possible lineup at this moment. If he doesn't win he should consider resigning.
