Levante - Real Sociedad (0:0)

Regardless of the Champions League, the visitors arrive with their strongest line-up

  • Published:

Levante took the three points at Rayo with a great amount of luck, but today they are severely tempted as they are hosting a Champions League team

After suffering a disaster at the feet of Barcelona (0-7) in the first round, Levante returned to their familiar defensive and rough play, which produced some results. First they managed to keep a clean sheet and take a point against the attacking Sevilla side. After that, they took the full catch at an awkward visit to Rayo Vallecano. Despite having an extra player, Levante were completely outplayed, but great goalkeeping by Keylor Navas kept them in the match. The visitors had a turn of fortune after four minutes of injury time when Andreas Ivanschitz managed to score for 2-1 while Rayo were constantly attacking.

Today Levante will be missing the defender Chris Lell who cannot manage to recover from his injury and will have to be operated soon. The standard centre back David Navarro has minor injury problems; some sources claim he will start today, other say he won't. So we will put a question mark over David Navarro's appearance today. Good news is the return of Nabil El Zhar to the squad, whereas Loukas Vyntra and Andreas Ivnaschitz returned healthy from international duty.

Home team goalkeeper Keylor Navas explained what is Levante's biggest fear today:
- We need to be extremely careful in defence. Real is a very talented team that have both individual and collective quality. They are especially dangerous from the midfield forward, and they are capable of using their opponents' every mistake an turn it into a goal.

Real Sociedad suffered their first loss of the season against Atletico, but the game they demonstrated was not at all bad. In fact, the San Sebastian team started the match roughly and were a better side, but their opponent had the brilliant Thibaut Courtois in the goal. When David Villa took advantage of one mistake, there was no room for a comeback and Atletico easily finished the match.

Prior to the Champions League qualifying match against Lyon, Real coach rested a couple of his first-team players, but this time Jagoba Arrasate said:
- I am not resting anybody for the Campions League, we are taking our best 11 to Levante, and we will consider Shakhtar when the time comes.

Most players who had minor injury problems will be at disposal today. The only exception is the wing back Carlos m
Martinez who has been lightly injured since the season start. For the first time this season Real's first attacker Imanol Agirretxe joined the training session and he could be a candidate for the first squad, but we should not expect his appearance. Haris Seferovic showed amazing plays at the start of the season and he will be in the starting line-up today as well.

To me, Levante showed nothing special this season. I watched them in their last league match against Rayo and realistically they should have suffered a decisive defeat. Their goalkeeper Navar had a great game and Rayo's strikers kept on missing their chances and only in injury time they managed to score a winning goal with a man advantage. Even with a man advantage they were mostly concerned about defending their own goal and would occasionally threaten from counter-attacks.

On the other hand, Real suffered a defeat in their home match last week against strong Atletico, but managed to play well and players have nothing to blame themselves for that loss. I am aware that Real plays Champions League match this week, which is important to them, but as Arrasate said - no one will be spared today. It would be bad for them to fall behind at the start of the season and I believe they will play for the win today. If we compare the quality of these two teams and their current form, everything is in the favor of the visiting team.

For safety reasons I will pick Asian handicap on Real +0 which will return my stake in the case of a draw.
