Almeria - Levante (2:2)

Almeria won't give up their offense game

  • Published:

Although the host score two goals per game an average, Levante have shown that they can stop even offensively stronger teams

Almeria continued their nice tradition against Atletico in Madrid. In each of the first four rounds they scored two goals. They have no trouble in the offense, but to their fans' disappointment, Almeria has no wins either. Their defense let through 11 goals in four rounds.

The best example of Almeria's defense is given to us by one of their irreplaceable members, Sebastian Dubarbier. The Argentinian managed to score an auto-goal in first three games, give the opposing team a penalty kick, and earn a sending off. The list might have kept going on, but due to the suspension he didn't play last weekend in Madrid, but today he should be back in the line up.

- I don't know what the problem is, maybe it's inexperience. Almost all of Almeria's players are debuts in the highest rank of Spanish football. We certainly don't lack want, but because of that we burn out and then we make stupid mistakes which cost us points - explained the Argentinian defender the reason of Almeria's problems.

No matter the number of received goals, Almeria don't see a reason to give up their way of playing, which is explained by center back Hernan Pellerano:

- Why shouldn't we keep our game going? Now everyone's acting smart, and we have people waving some statistics at us, like they know everything. But we don't intend to give up our game, we'll keep on playing just as we did before, because that's what we do, "de puta madre" (author's note: the last part requires no translation).

With the return of Dubarbier in the competition, coach Francisco Javier Rodriguez has his whole team on stand by.

Levante have, at the opening of the season, suffered seven goals in Barcelona and then turned their game around in the way which best suits them. In the next three rounds Levante didn't abandon their defensive approach and playing on free balls, which brought them a total of five points. They left with a null offensively stronger teams such as Sevilla or Real Sociedad.

After a long time, the recuperated German defender Christian Lell is back to Levante's team. But standard midfielder Papa Diop's participation in the match is questionable. Final medical checks-ups will give the final answer to the question whether the Senegalese will play today.

The quotas for today's match surprised me. The betting houses estimated that Almeria is a big favorite compared to Levante. We practically have 50% chance that Almeria will win and 50% chance that Levante will remain unbeaten which is for me quite unacceptable. I don't see why Almeria would be this much of a favorite. It is a team that hasn't won against anybody this season yet and they showed many weaknesses in the defense.
Levante is still estimated by the betting houses according to the defeat in Barcelona in the first round, but in the next three rounds that team showed how tough they can be and managed to tame much better offenses than Almeria's. Levante is not a team which plays attractive football but it brings results. They play firmly and defensively, waiting for counterattack opportunities which so far proved itself to be effective. They will not give up that logic today and I am convinced they can earn at least one point in the away match today. The quotas are in my opinion wrong and it would be good to make a bet for a medium stake that the away team remains undefeated.
