Lemgo - Goppingen (32:34)

Goppingen snatched a point against Lowen after losing 12-19

  • Published:

Lemgo played much better away than home so far. At their court they have a convincing defeat to Melsungen and a win over Gummersbach, despite losing 90% of the time

Young coach Niels Pfanneschmidt is keeping to a successful path in his first season as the head coach of a Bundesliga team, after being in charge of Lemgo youth teams in the past. Even though the financial crisis cost them Lichtlein, Strobel Preiss, Dietrich, Johansson and Sorrentino, Lemgo lost only one match so far, and that was the last one at home against Melsungen (38-33).

During the pre-season training Pfanneschmidt announced fast play, with quick centre and lots of running, which wasn't surprising as he has a very young team. Such play has been producing results so far. Last weekend at Minden, who has had solid defence in the first rounds, they played in accordance to their philosophy, drew 31-31 even though they were, in total, a better team.

- It was a hot derby match with a lot of ups and downs on both sides. The draw is a fair result in the end. Minden put up a real fight - said Pfanneschmidt after the match.

The right back Rolf Hermann was Lemgo's best player once again and their key attacking figure. Lemgo took a 31-30 lead through his 6th goal. And Dresrusse was good at the goal in the last moments of the match.

Lemgo has been conceding a lot of goals. But they certainly mustn't repeat their defending performance from their last home match tonight if they want to win point against a team who is very similar to Melsungen. Besides, the visitors will be arriving with a great amount of encouragement after getting a 23-23 draw against the league leaders Rhein Neckar Lowen.

Especially when we consider the way Goppingen got the draw, their first one in five rounds. They were losing 19-12, by getting a 9-2 run they got to 21-21 after 55 minutes of play, and Momir Rnic scored his last 3 of a total 5 goals in the last 6 minutes.

- We managed to come back with fan support, we fought heavily - said the left winger Marcel Schiller.

- One could see what can be done with such an audience. The fans were a decisive factor in getting the point - added the right winger Dragos Oprea, who scored the 23-23 equalizer with 30 seconds to go.

- Now we want to keep up the good work at Lemgo, but we have to reduce the number of technical mistakes - said middle back Miim Kraus to the local Neue Wurttembergische Zeitung.

They recently had a 20-14 lead at Flensburg, but eventually lost by one goal in the last second thanks to refereeing injustice. This was payback for them and maybe that was the incentive coach Petkovic's team needed. Their schedule at the start of the season was extremely hard and the small number of points is not tragic as they are worth much more than 1 point in 5 matches. Perhaps the draw last weekend is the detail that was needed to keep the team going. They are definitely not weaker than Lemgo and can charge for new points today. Besides, Lemgo played much better away than home so far, where they lost to Melsungen and beat Gummersbach, despite losing for 55 minutes in that match.

In their last three rounds, Lemgo played against relegation candidates Minden and Eisenach and againt Melsungen at home. They got two draws and were crushed by Melsungen. Göppingen are on a par with these three teams and are coming highly motivated after 23-23 against Löwen, in a game in which they were down 19-12. They were quite unlucky before that. They lost against Flensburg in the last moments, they lost very close games to Hannover and Magdeburg. I think that point is bound to lift their spirits, they don't have many injured players, and they can match Lemgo in all positions. Their middle back is better (Kraus - Herth), their left bak is better (Rnic - Lönn), their goalkeepers are much better (Prost and Marinovic - Dressrüse), their pivots and wings are at least as good as Lemgo's. The only advantage the home team has is the right back position where Hermann reigns supreme, while Göppingen are somewhat short there, despite having Thiede and Lobedank.
