Chomutov - Slavia Prague (6:7)

Slavia stick to the winning formula: defence and nothing but defence

  • Published:

Away team coach Ruzicka is satisfied, and how could he not be when his defensive part of the team is working well. But he can't be satisfied with the overall play and he claims he doesn't know why his team gets scared when they take the lead

Pirat Chomutov's agony continues. The victory over Slavia Prague in the second round obviously brought them more bad things than good. They haven't won ever since that match. They won a single point in their last three matches, and that was against Litvinov, which they lost after penalty shootout. The peak of poor play happened on Trinec ice on Tuesday. The defence which conceded a fair 10 goals in 4 matches (2.5 per match) had to take the puck out of their net six times.

No-one could predict after the first period, which ended 0-0, that we would witness such a match. Just like no-one could anticipate that the Pirates would lose after leading 2-0 after 25 minutes of play. But then, in the period of 7 minutes and 14 seconds, they conceded four goals and things suddenly took a wrong turn for them.

- We came to Trinec with the intention of winning some points because they showed poor form in the opening rounds. We took the 2-0 lead, but soon conceded after our powerplay. Our mistake leading to that goal was grave and the hosts turned the result around to 4-2 after putting much pressure on us. We showed good morale in the rest of the match, but it wasn't enough - said coach Jiri Celansky.

They will have to fix things against probably the hardest opponent at this moment. They are hosting Slavia Prague, the league leaders who haven't lost yet in the five matches this season, and who also haven't lost a single of their four head-to-head matches last season. But the home team see that as extra motivation. The attacker Kubincek is returning to the squad, whereas the defending duo Trefny and Mrazek are out of action.

- I doubt Slavia will change something in their play when it brings them results. It's all the same to us, we aim for the win in every match, regardless who is on the other side - said coach Celansky.

To give a preview of Slavia's each next match, we could simply copy and paste the previous preview. Of course, we don't do that, but there are no news in Slavia before this round. They are still the only undefeated team this season, their defence still looks fearsome, their goalie Furch is still saving shots in a phenomenal manner, their attack still doesn't look good, but they make up for it with excellent defending, etc, etc.

In the last round, Slavia hosted an offensively awkward team of Vitkovice and showed they do not have problems with such teams. They managed to constrain a team that scored 13 goals in the last four matches (more than 3 goals per match) to only 27 shots and 1 goal. Should we even say that the league's best goalie Furch was on top of his game once again, he saved 26 of 27 shots (96.29%). The Prague team managed to kill the penalty on all three occasions, whereas they used one of six powerplays.

So there were no major exceptions to previous matches. Other than the fact this was the first time they managed to beat an opponent at home in regulation time. The last two matches went to penalty shootout (Pardubice) and extra time (Mountfield), but both were resolved in Slavia's favour.

- The Vitkovice match was quite level. We managed to score two goals in the first period, and after that it was a level match. We did have some opportunities, but so did they. I don't know why, but every time we take the lead, we stop playing from reasons unknown to me. As if we are afraid of the result. I can't explain that to myself. I am happy about the three points, but unhappy about the play. It's a good thing we conceded only four goals in five matches - said coach Ruzicka who is satisfied with his defence, but not with his team in total.

The Vitkovice match was the last one of three home matches for Slavija. Now they are going away again. In their two away matches so far they won the maximum six points and conceded only one goal.

There are no signs of absences at the league leaders.

There is no need to introduce Slavia with too many words as this is a team that showed a simply fantastic defensive play in the first five games, while the fact they have conceded only four goals so far can largely be attributed to their amazing goaltender Furch who is at 97.24%. Chomutov, with the exception of four goals against defensively poor Trinec, went over this margin only once, against Sparta at home, but they only managed to score that third goal two minutes before the end, after Sparta opened up completely. Nothing similar should happen today, since I don't expect for the Prague team to find themselves chasing Chomutov's lead. Besides, an indicator that Slavia's defensive play doesn't suit the Pirates is the last season, in which Ruzicka's team won all four games against Chomutov with a 17-2 goal difference!
