Vive Kielce - Porto Vitalis (35:23)

The home team players announce a serious approach to the match

  • Published:

Kielce have been rising in form and their wide roster enables them to rest their players in the domestic competition. If Porto don't put in a spectacular performance, they could find themselves in trouble

Following their victory over Dunkerque, Kilece hosted Lubin, who didn't have the best of times in that match. The reigning champions put in another brilliant performance, outplaying the visitors, who couldn't find an answer to the home side's offense. This is the fifth consecutive match that Kielce have scored over 30 goals and the offensive firepower is tipped to keep improving in every next match.

Against Lubin, even Chrapkowski finally made his mark, scoring 8 goals and showing he will definitely be one of Wanta's quality solutions. Jachlewski was also brilliant as he contributed with his 11 goals, only one of those being a 7-meter throw. The fact that the question of winner was solved soon enabled the home team coach to give his main stars rest so they will be completely ready for the match against Porto.

With their performance in Kopenhagen, Porto showed they mean business. They understand handball and they can play it well. Despite their defeat, they are not to be underestimated. Even Dunkerque created us a lot of problems, despite the fact that in the end our victory seemed convincing. They should not  be taken easily - warned coach Wenta.

But Wenta can be pleased with the fact that his team rarely underestimate their opponents, regardless who they may be. The home arena and the fans who support their team until the very end definitely contribute to that. In addition, week in week out the players demonstrate willingness and desire to give their 100% in the domestic league, even though the teams they play against are often way below their level.

The Champions League is a competition in which you shouldn't underestimate anybody. We are in a tough group and we must play every match with full throttle, regardless of our opponents. We will be completely focused and motivated - said captain Tkaczyk.

Porto played their derby in this elite competition in Denmark. They showed a decent resistance against Kolding but they never posed any real threat to the home side. By half-time Kolding had a five-goal advantage (15-10) and they kept it until the end. Despite the defeat, the media reported Porto's good performance, emphasizing the word pride as the one that best describes the feelings after the match. The lack of players in the rotation was certainly a problem. Kolding had 10 or 11 players in their squad able to maintain a high tempo during the entire course of the match and thereby to keep Porto at bay. Tiago Rocha was the team's top scorer with 5 goals.

Porto have not had the best of introductions for today's match. Having defeated their fierce rivals Benfica in the domestic league, Porto made a big step backwards by losing to Aquas Santos at home. Porto had defeated them on regular basis but it seems that they have paid the price of playing in an exerting rhythm in the last seven days so their battle for the top of the table suffered a blow. The fact that it is their first home defeat in four years, after 60 matches, says enough.

Following their away games at Benfica and in Denmark, they have an away game in Poland, against one of the best teams in Europe. Before the start of the season it had been assumed that the tight schedule would be a big bite for the Portuguese team. Maybe they have bit more than they can chew, especially considering their lack of experience. Kielce have a huge ambition, they want to make it once again to the Final Four and it is truly difficult to expect Porto to win their first Champions League points here. So far, Porto defense proved to be the better part of the team (Benfica 24, Kolding 25, Aquas Santos 25 goals conceded). The aggressive 6-0 defense will be put to trial today, considering that Kielce have hammered the French runners-up and even though the result might not suggest it, they have sent a clear message to everybody in the group.

We play against a very strong team, who were at the Final Four last season and who have a budget of several million euros. It will be a difficult match but Porto will remain faithful to their style. We are  aware of the difficulty of this mission but Porto is used to playing only to win - assistant coach Ricardo Costa declared.

We dreamed about playing this competition and now we have to prove we belong here. We come here in the wake of two negative results but we have the experience and the quality necessary to return to our winning ways. Porto always go for the victory, no matter where we play or against who we play - Wilson Davyes believes in a positive result.

Porto will once again try to stay in the match as long as possible. However, this is already their fourth match in just nine days so the players must be tired and Kielce will be there to capitalize on their every mistake. The Polish champions displayed a great defensive performance against Dunkerque so the offensively unconvincing Porto could have serious problems in that segment.

Updates

  • 29.09.2013. 11:39h Chrapkowski out today yet

Chrapkowski will not be available for the game today, as it turns out. That shouldn't be a major issue for the home team, however, considering their roster's depth.

I must admit I was surprised to see the odds for this match, as many things don't sound realistic. Kielce are a team that played the Champions league Final Four last year. They have won the national championship more than decisively. They have only grown stronger since last year, and their goals stayed the same to say the least. In their last 5 games they scored less than 33 goals in only one game, at season's opening. With all due respect to Porto, I don't believe they can leave a team such as Kielce under this margin today, regardless of their defense. The Polish team are not Benfica or KIF after all, and I see them playing a devastating match today. If they were playing an away game, this kind of a margin might seem too much, but as it is, I have to take it. Marathon so far also has a solid handicap of -9.5, which is also not a bad option in my opinion.
