A match worth "double" points

These are two direct competitors for a place in the second round. Vardar comes full of confidence after 29-29 draw against Barcelona who they limited to only 10 goals in the second half, while Dinamo played good against PSG on the road, although they lost that match

Belorussian Dinamo has much to regret after their return from the French capitol. PSG were surely a favorite in that match, at least on the paper, but their plays at the start of the season gave Dinamo hope they can achieve positive result in a very difficult road match.

For a long time during the match it seemed that Dinamo might have a chance. The first half was a duel between the two equal teams and PSG took one goal lead at the half. In the second half we saw a bit more open match and Dinamo offense functioned great and they took the lead at the start of the second half after a series of goals. At the middle of the half Dinamo had 22-19, but then they started to struggle and PSG used the chance and took the lead and ended the match relatively easily.

- Maybe our players showed too much respect for them. The team played well but in the last 10 minutes PSG changed the rhythm and their defense from 6-0 into 5-1 and we did not respond well to those changes. We lost a few balls and a team such as PSG always uses opponent's mistakes - said disappointed Denic after the match.

- We should have stayed tough and win. But we missed clean chances and when you play against players such as Narcisse and Abalo, you will surely be punished - Ivan Nincevic had a similar comment on the match.

Dinamo failed to use their chance to win unexpected and valuable points. Since PSG and Barcelona will almost surely qualify into the next round, home matches against Vardar and Metalurg are the matches they simply have to win. Although it is only the second round, Vardar already took a point against Barcelona and a new defeat would remove Dinamo from quarter-final race.

- We only think about Vardar - Denic denied his team still thinks about the match in Paris.

Kastratovic is famous for preferring offensive defense formations such as 5-1 and 3-2-1. He used those formations when he coached Montenegro national team and now he uses them in Vardar. It was obvious in Paris that Dinamo struggled against those formations and it will be interesting to see how will they adapt to them today.

- Vardar brought several good players during the summer. They are definitely more experienced team than we are. They play 5-1, 3-2-1 and 6-0 defense and my job is to prepare my team for all of those options - said Denic and added his players are ready to take on the challenge, all but Babicev who will not play for another month.

Both teams mostly showed their offensive potential in the first round, but since this is a very important match, it is doubtful we will see the same scenario. Both teams changed their style of play but it is important to note that Vardar limited Barcelona to under 30 goals. Dinamo will have trouble matching that. After the first round in which Vardar had a draw and Metalurg won, the pressure is on Dinamo and they can not make a mistake in this match.

Vardar coach Zoran Kastratovic talked about defense prior to the match against Barcelona and his desire to limit Barcelona under 30 goals. After the match he repeated:

- Against powerful Barcelona we have shown what we had announced. If we limit them to under 30 goals we can play with them. Sometimes David defeats Goliath, this match we were the David.

They did not win (29-29), but they felt like winners. Although nobody gave them chance at the start of the second half. Raul Entrerior scored for 21-15 and everything went into Barcelona's favor. A few goals by Brumen after a cut from the wing to back positions, a few goals by young Dujshebaev, a few goals by Igor Karacic and a series of saves by Malumbres and Vardar came back. The arena exploded when they took 25-24 lead and they had 29-28 and an attack for the win at 29-29, but the match ended with a draw.

That point is a huge one, but they need points from matches against Dinamo, Metalurg and Wacker Thun. These teams will determine which team goes into the next round.

- According to what we saw from the match between Dinamo and PSG, Minsk is a very homogenous team. They play well in the defense and in the offense. Their goalkeeper Pejanovic was especially good in that match and he is the reason why those teams were equally matched for the better part of the match - said Vardar coach about today's match.

- Dinamo have almost identical situation as Vardar. A new coach and many new players. I think we have equal chances to win today.

Kastratovic emphasized that his team was exhausted after the match with Barcelona, "but that will not be a problem today."

Barcelona scored only 10 goals in the second half, Timur Dibirov scored 8, Karacic 7, Dujshebaev 5. Coach Kastratovic can count on all his players today.

- They do not have extra team like PSG or Barcelona, they play tough defense and the biggest offensive threat is their offensive trio Shelmenko, Nikulenkau and Nincevic - added Vardar coach who can count on his goalkeeper Petar Angelov in today's match.

Karacic played with a fever against Barcelona and coach is a bit worried about his health condition, but everything should be OK.

This margin is partly the result of the first round matches. Still, I think we will see something different today. The match is incredibly important, one of the key ones in a group like this and I don't think we will watch a very offensive game. Dinamo conceded 34 goals in Paris, 22 of which in the second half. They played defense really well in the first part and conceded only 12 goals thanks to the goalkeeper Pejanovic. They won against AEK 25-21 and Tatran 29-27 in the qualification tournament in Presov. Those matches were similar in importance to this one. They went over this margin only against Barcelona (28-30) in the six home matches last year. It was the last round match in the group stage, which made no difference. That Dinamo is a bit different that this one, but I don't think Denic can count on winning any points here is he concedes close to 30 goals. Vardar went through even bigger changes, but their back line is not as strong and that could cause problems. This margin is quite high I think, and I doubt the match will be decided on more than 55 goals.
