Spartak coach Vetra: Our results will come through a good defense

Although Donetsk game revealed Spartak's weaknesses away win against Besiktas restored the confidence

Turow demonstrated from the beginning of the Polish championship they are the title contenders. They presented themselves as a very good team at Koszalin on Thursday. They were dominant against tough opponent and by the half time break they had 13 points lead which was almost doubled during the second period when they left their opponents on only 24 scored points before eventually winning the game with +25.

They had a few good looking players like point guard Tony Taylor who had 8 rebounds and 9 assists and small forward J.P. Prince who recorded double-double(10 points and 10 rebounds). Their performances are important because both of them are new players in the team and they both play at vulnerable positions. 

The man of the match was again power forward Damian Kulig ,who regullary comes in from the bench, but he played great just like he did during the preseason. He scored 21 points. Turow managed to completely stop shot attempts from Koszalin players and they looked pretty dominant throughout the game.

But regardless of their dominance in Polish league they are still too weak to compete with the VTB league teams. In the first round they didn't have a chance in Kazan but it looks like they are optimistic prior to the Spartak clash:

-Polish championship and VTB league are two different worlds. We fought against Unics, we tried everything but it wasn't enough. We recorded four wins last year in the VTB and we want to increase the number this year. We will give our best in every match - said Kulig.

Problems mentioned several times before made Spartak significantly weaker team than they were last year. A trip to Donetsk revealed all the weaknesses but away win against Besiktas was just the thing they needed. Spartak didn't have a brilliant offensive night but have played great in defensive segment and have exploited host's weaker performance. 

I am happy with the game my players had. They have learned a lesson from Donetsk. This time we played significantly better defense both individually and as a collective. Defense must be a foundation on which we can build our success. We have a certain offensive potential but I expect our results will come through a strong defense - said Vetra after the match.

It was a pretty slow game with only 105 field goal attempts in which Spartak have managed to control the rhythm. Spartak once again depended on offensive skills of the American players and Yakovenko. McGrath scored 16 and Yakovenko scored 15 points. 

- McGrath is a key player in our team, we need him and that is the reason why he plays so much. Of course that fatigue comes from spending so much time on the pitch so we have to use him smartly - commented Vetra and added:

-Yakovenko collected two personal fouls early in the game so he was able to help us only after the half-time break. Ilya Popov worked hard during the training sessions so he deserved his chance to play. He presented himself well in his first match. It is obvious he must keep working hard like every other young player.

The game in Poland will be of huge importance for Spartak so Vetra said:

-Backroom staff already started the preparations for the game. I can only say that we must play like we did in last two games. This game against them won't be easy for us.

During the week, Spartak defeated Besiktas which resulted in decreased odds in favor of their win. However, that match only confirmed Spartak's limitations in the offense. They managed to achieve that win only tanks to their great defense and a bad evening for Besiktas' offense. Last season, Turow achieved all of their wins on their home court, that's what they're good at, and they have every right to hope for they first win today. In the first round, in an away match against the offensively stronger team UNICS, Turow received only 72 points, while scoring 62 points themselves. On the other hand, Spartak stayed at 65 points in Donetsk. I don't believe we'll see a pileup of points today either. In the national championship, Turow showed that defense was their biggest asset, while Spartak's coach Vetra said that his team had to base their success on the defense. Spartak won in this away match last year 63-59, but they had a pretty stronger line-up then, including Beverley. Maybe a slightly better option would be a team under for Spartak, but I decided for this option, due to greater availability.
