Panionios defense should dictate the rhythm of the game

Panionios acquired good and experienced foreigners, while in Kolosses they turned to younger Americans due to lack of funds and their adaptation to European basketball will have an important role. At the start of the season Panionios seems to be in great advantage

Kolossos failed last year if we speak about their results and someone had to pay for 10th place on the league table at the end of the season. Surprisingly, the management did not fire coach Fragias but opted for almost complete roster change during the summer so main players left the team and only Osby, Georgalis and Kapelan stayed for this season.

Since they announced they will have to make financial cuts, this season their team is much cheaper and that is seen in the Americans that came to their team during the summer. These are young players that came from American colleagues and this will be their first encounter with European basketball which will be a huge problem for Kolloses at the start of the season.

- At the start of the season we will have especially hard time to fit our rookies Simpson, Taylor and Smith together since this is their first European season and they will need some time to adapt - said Fragias at the start of the season.

It is important for Kolosses they have already played two rounds in the Cup and that surely helped the team to get to known each other and to increase their confidence since their last season was not good and they start this season with that result hanging over their heads. Their beginning is everything but easy because they are visiting great Panionios.

- We have a difficult game ahead and we have to find our rhythm and win although we are facing traditionally strong Panionios. They always play good in their arena and we have to adapt to it.

Panionios made significant changes this summer and the overall feel is that this team is equally good, if not even better, than the one they had last season. The key thing is that their coach Sferopoulos is with the team since the start of the season and is not coming in the middle of it to salvage what he can. When he came last year he needed time to settle everything in the team and enforce his defensive strategy on his team. When he succeeded, Panionios had the best defense in the league after Panathinaikos and this year they expect to be equally good on the defensive end.

Judging from the preseason when they allowed only 60 points to their opponents we can say that coach Sferopoulos did everything he had planned and that he team will play according to his vision.

- Players reacted very well to my ideas and I am already pleased with our play. But, we have many new players and naturally we will play better in every game.

That is why Panionios had so many preseason games and is is to be expected they will continue to play like they did last season when they were the best team of the "rest of the league". This game is very important and coach Sferopoulos is aware of that:

- The first game of each season is always difficult, but we have to do our best and win. We will need the support of our fans and I am sure they will fill the stands in the arena and we need such support against tough opponents such as Kolosses.

Last season Panionios were neck in neck with Panathinaikos and Olympiacos and this season the situation is not much different. During the summer Panionios acquired the best players from teams that were bellow them on the league table and now they have a great team again. Their biggest advantage is the fact their coach Sferopoulos has been with them for a year and half and that is seen in their great defense that coach demands. During the preseason they allowed approximately 60 points to all opponents and the situation will be the same against Kolosses. The visiting team lost their key players from last season and they substituted them with Americans that just finished universities and they will need time to adapt to European basketball. That will be a huge problem at the start of the season, especially when they meet strong defense such as Panionios have. I expect them to have a lot of turnovers and for Panionios to score many easy points in their arena where they were untouchable last season, apart from the "big duo" of the Greek league. It should be added that Kolosses play much worse as soon as they leave their arena and since I expect a full stands today and great support of Panionios fans, the difference in quality between these two teams should be seen.
