Atlanta - Indiana (98:85)

West: We know they'll play better at home

  • Published:

In the second game, the Pacers' defense showed they do have at least some response to the Hawks game, as the Hawks can pull out all five players to the perimeter, practically removing the main strength of Frank Vogel's team - defending the paint

The Atlanta Hawks entered the playoffs as the only team with a negative score, but they soon made it clear that they will not keel over and die, by shocking the top seed team in game one, which bought them a "break", their topmost goal before the series moves to Phillips Arena. On Saturday night, Mike Budenholzer's team stormed through Indianapolis, and they also had a solid start two days later, before the Indiana Pacers reminded everyone of the team from the start of the season and took off to a 101-85 victory, tying the series.

- We've shown we can play against them. Now we just have to keep it up- said coach Frank Vogel before he boarded the 90 minute long flight towards Atlanta, with his team.

Once again the Pacers started the match late, as they had a chilling -11 points lag during the second quarter, but managed to cut it down to an acceptable -4 (52-48) by halftime. The second half was a completely different story. The home team defended their perimeter fiercely, while the Hawks kept missing three-pointers, which soon turned the score around. The end of the third and start of fourth quarter brought a 25-5 series by the Pacers and their take off to +26 (93-67) after which there was no way for the guys from Atlanta, who were limited to just 33 points in the second half.

-I think there were some chances and shots that were a part of our system throughout the season, and we want our guys to shoot and play with confidence. This is an important segment of our game. Had we made some of those shots perhaps the third quarter could have turned out differently- commented coach Mike Budenholzer, adding:

- Our execution was not at the required level, on both sides of the court. We have to give them credit, they were aggressive, they played a good match. As far as we're concerned, we have to execute much better, we cannot allow ourselves such a third quarter. We'll work on that.

The Pacers defense finally showed they have at least some response to the Hawks game, as the Hawks can pull out all five players to the perimeter, practically removing the main strength of Frank Vogel's team, which is protection of the paint.

- In the third quarter we played the game we had in November, December and January. We went back to that. I think we crunched down well on defense, especially in the second half, and focused on what we needed to do- said Paul George, who ended the game with 27 points  (9/16, 5/7 three pointers), ten rebounds, six assists, four steals and one block. Aside from becoming the first player in 859 playoff games, since Jason Kidd 2003, to fill up his stats with such numbers, George also played excellent defense on Hawks' point guard Jeff Teague, who was limited to 14 points (6/13), five rebounds and four assists, as opposed to the first game where he demolished the Pacers with 28 points (9/19) and five assists.

-That's the reason he was among the MVP contenders early in the season. He always does things like that, covering the opponent's best man on the perimeter, helping on rebounds and creating pressure. When he plays the way he did in this game, he is definitely one of the most rounded up players today- said coach Vogel, praising his top star after his team scored 52.9% of their shots, including 8/17 three pointers.

Just to keep things clear, the Pacers struggled with offense in the second game as well, especially in the first half, while they were trying to wake up Roy Hibbert (6 points, 1/7 shooting), but as they saw that was going nowhere they put their faith in other players. George Hill had a particularly good reaction, scoring all 15 of his points (5/8) in the second half, mostly penetrating to the heart of the Hawks' defense, while Luis Scola gave a great contribution from the bench, scoring 20 points (9/14) and seven rebounds in the 19 minutes he spent on court.

The Pacers got some of their confidence back with this victory, but the next two shall be played in the arena in which they won only two games since 2006, and at one point had a 13 game losing streak.

- We want to build on what we've started here, and try to stay aggressive. We know they play better at home, but we're going there to reclaim control of the series.

Roy Hibbert Player total rebounds 8,5 tip: Under   Spužva
Odds Stake Min. odds Bookmaker

Roy Hibbert was expected to dominate this series, especially after his performances in the playoff last year when he had All-Star figures (20+10), but that did not happen now. In fact, he's as weak as he's been for the past few months. To explain the reason for this bet, I will start with his terrible attacking efficiency. The Pacers tried to solve that by resting him but that didn't yield the effect they wanted. His poor form continued in the playoffs and he only got 8 points and 8 rebounds in 30 minutes of the first game (4/9), while he scored six points and got 4 rebounds after 6 minutes less in the second game an. Since Antić kept him out of the pain in the first game, Vogel tried to hide Hibb next to Millsap but that didn't give the desired effect and he spent the best part of the game on the bench. Since I don't think much has changed in two days, I don't expect to see him inspired today, especially not in terms of rebounds. Apart from the match-up, the stats also speak in favor of this bet as he has gone over this margin in only 4 games since January 1st (38 games), and not once in last 11 games.
