Indiana - Miami (83:87)

James: We have to be better

  • Published:

Home team won 13 out of the last 15 duels, including eight consecutive matches, and the Pacers would do a huge step towards their final goal by winning tonight

Indiana Pacers sacrificed a lot, including their form, to conclude the regular part as the best team in the East, and get the advantage of the home court in a match against the current champions. Looking at a wider picture might have payed off immensely because they played one of their best matches on Sunday, especially in the offense, and defeated the Heat with final 107-96, which helped them lead 1-0 in the series that will give one finalist in the end.

- It's a good start, but just a start. We have to expect an even tougher job in the next match. We have to be aware of who we're playing against - coach Frank Vogel warned.

The guests decided to start the series with the short lineup where Chris Bosh is on the position five, and Shane Battier and LeBron James on wing positions, which resulted with a decent offensive effect, but at the same time, the Pacers were in a good mood and played what could be their best period of the playoffs, winning it with 30-24, and having 61% field goal. By the halftime, they had +10, and they decided the match in the third period when they scored eight consecutive points and reached 69-52. Not long after, they went to +19, but the Heat managed to reduce it to 83-70 by the last period. The guests came closer, to being 10 points behind, but the Pacers had too many players in a great mood to gamble an advantage this big away.

- We played with a lot of energy. It was something where we sometimes failed in this year's playoffs. Sometimes we lacked consistency and energy at the beginning of the matches. I think we were focused and aggressive on both sides of the court this time. When we did something bad, we worked hard to fix it. We were occasionally reckless in the past, but we can't allow ourselves to do that now. We have to stay humble and play the next match with the same approach. We're aware we're playing against the back-to-back champions. We know they'll make some changes. Everything we did on Sunday will have to be even better on Tuesday if we want to continue this - Paul George commented. He ended the match with 24 (7/13) points and seven assists.

The Pacers ended the duel with 51.5% field goal, including 8/19 three pointers. They had 38 points from paint, and added 37 free throws that got them 29 points. For comparison, the Heat only had 15 free throws (scored 10 points), and they failed with the tree pointers, only 6/23, so the fact that they scored 54 points from paint fell to the background.

- They did their job in the first match, but we're going to be better in the second. Everything's still fresh. We have to be better for sure. We'll try to reduce the number of mistakes from the first match. We simply have to go out with the right approach on Tuesday, and do our job - LeBron James stated. He had 25 (11/18) points, ten jumps and five assists.

- My approach is the same before every match, I always try to place pressure on the defense, get free throws and help the team to win. I managed to get to the hoop, score some shots, but I have to be even better.

Besides James, the only Heat player in a good mood was Dwayne Wade with 27 (12/18) points, but the rest of the team didn't back them up, especially Chris Bosh who was left with 8 (4/12) points, two jumps and four assists. On the other side, each one of the Pacers' five were great. David West (8/11) and Roy Hibbert (5/13) scored 19 points each, with 16 (7+9) jumps total, and Lance Stephenson was great with 17 (8/12) points and eight assists, while George Hill and C.J.Watson helped with 15 and 11 points.

The Heat will have to make some changes for the second match, most of all in the defense that didn't look good at all. LeBron James will have to take most of the burden, he wasn't impressive while guarding West. It's not often that the best player in the world doesn't have an advantage over someone in the physical part, like in the matchup with West who drained the strength from James with experience, without forcing anything. It's clear that the Heat have a lot of substitutes and variants to stand up against the Pacers who can hardly play the complete series like they did the first duel. At the same time, they can base their optimism on the fact that the home team won 13 out of the last 15 matches, including eight in a row, and the Pacers would do a huge step forward their final goal by winning tonight.

- We don't have too many reasons to celebrate. We didn't win the title yet. We only won one match. Yes, that's good, but if we don't win on Tuesday, this match won't mean too much - George Hill pointed out.

Roy Hibbert was often bad in the last few months, sometimes even disastrous, but it seems he finally got his form. In four of the last six matches, he scored at least 14 points, and South Beach company still motivates him in a special way. Many people can probably still remember how the Pacers' center caused problems for the Heat in the last year's East finals, scoring 22.1 points per match. He didn't score less than 18 points in none of those seven matches (19,29,20,23,22,24,18), and he continued that trend on Sunday when he scored 19 points in 39 minutes, with 5/13 field goal and 9/13 from the free throws line. We should point out that Hibbo didn't play a brilliant match nor dominated like he sometimes did against the Heat in the past, but he reached those statistics anyway. It's obvious his athleticism can help him easily get good positions where it's easy for him to score of get free throws, and since Greg Oden is still not ready, I believe Hibbert will cause headaches to the physically inferior Bosh.
