Volleyball » Montreux Masters (W), 1. round

China - Russia (3:2)

China with almost their strongest setup, Russia with quite a few absences

  • Published:

China arrived to Switzerland with almost their strongest setup, Russia brought seven new players. With that balance of power in mind, the Chinese are clearly the favorites, but Russia are not looking bad at all

CEV

The Russians have a great year behind them, winning the European title with a rejuvenated team. They started that one in Switzerland too, winning second place at the Montreaux Masters, with Brazil beating them in the final. Same as this year, back then selector Marichev also gave a chance to the younger players, and some of them took full advantage of it.

- We've had eight days of practice, the players arrived to the preparations with different levels of form. For some the championships ended earlier, for some only recently. The challenge for us is to get them all in pretty much the same shape- commented the Russian selector on the beginning of the preparations.

He brought seven debutantes to Switzerland, of the team that won the European Championship last autumn he has four players: setter Kosianenko, corrector Malykh, blockers Zaryazhko and Shlyakhovaya, and libero Malova. Some of the players are absent due to injuries, but most will join the team later on. Despite the absences, Russia will present a very good team in Switzerland. This is a great chance for the young players to impress, and Marichev is aware of that:

- The positive thing is that the debutantes will be looking to leave an impression. They have a great desire to prove themselves and work, and with such a situation it is easy to train them. Apart from the Montreux Masters they will also have a chance to prove their value at the Yeltsin Cup.

Russian selector Marichev also spoke of his expectations at the Swiss tournament:

- We'd like to try out all the players, but also to win the tournament as well. Me saying that we'd like to give everyone a chance does not mean we want to lose games. We will play to win, in every match. We don't care about the roster our opponents brought here, we have to look to ourselves, solve our issues and play our game.

Last year China ended up sixth of the eight teams playing at this tournament. Back then they also opened against Russia and lost 3-1. However, back then China sent the junior selection here, the seniors stayed at home, preparing for what was to come later in the season. Overall, the season was not much of a success, as the second place in the Grand Prix overshadowed only their fourth in the Asian Championship, where China was the top favorite.

China have brought a much stronger team to Switzerland this year. There are absences, but selector Lang Ping has almost the strongest possible roster at her disposal. They'll be led by captain Hui Ruoqi, receiver, who will be backed on reception by young Zhu Ting, who impressed here last year with the junior team, winning a spot on the A selection with her performances.

We can expect Zheng Chunlei as the corrector, the blockers will be led by Xu Yunli and Yang Junjing, with Chen Zhan at the libero position. Ding Xia will be the setter, and should be a worthy substitute for Shen
Jingsi. Overall, there are no significant absences, and this Chinese team should be on par with the one that won second place at the Grand Prix last year. They later fumbled, winning only fourth place at the Asia Championship, but this season and the appearance at the World Championship are their chance to make up for the last one.

It's clear that China are the favorites but Russia will not be completely harmless either. The Russian should be able to get a set, and in that case this over should go through. It's through that China have their best squad here and Russia have brought 7 new players. Despite that, Russia can put together a very solid starting line-up. After all, three players that they did bring (Kosienko, Malova and Shlyakhovaya) were in the starting line-up at the EC finals. They are here with Malykh, their reserve opposite from the EC, and Zaryazhko, the player who missed the EC due to injury. This is a chance for some of them to impose themselves. An additional bonus is that the season has just begun and no team will be too brilliant as it's still early on. There will be ups and downs and this should work in favor of an over.
