Seattle - Denver (26:20)

A re-run of last year's Super Bowl

  • Published:

The Broncos claim that their fumble in the final last year is behind them, which is hard to believe judging by how severe a defeat that was. They significantly improved their defense during summer, particularly for the matches against opponents such as the Seahawks, and will have Wes Welker as well tonight

It's been a little under seven months since the Seattle Seahawks manage to shut down the best offense in the league's history at MetLife stadium, and limited Denver, led by Payton Manning, to just eight points for the most decisive Super Bowl victory in more than 20 years.

-We've stepped past that, it's behind us now, but we want to leave our mark on the league. Right now this is just another match, and won't change the outcome of the last season- sait the away team's safety David Bruton.

The Denver Broncos found some solace from a victory in preseason, but that can hardly satisfy their appetite for revenge after the disgrace in last year's final.

- I'm sure this match is as important to them as it is to us. I think something happened in the preseason as well. I think it was an important game for them, and I don't blame them for it- said the home team's coach, Pete Carroll.

His Seahawks opened the season with an impressive home win against the Packers, only to fumble in San Diego last week, with the final score 30-21. Pete Carroll's guys were completely outplayed by the Chargers, led by Philip Rivers, whose passer rating of 124,2 was the best they've allowed since 2010.

- The guys are quiet and serious. They don't take things lightly. We have to live with the high expectations and are all aware of that. The main thing is that we try to make adjustments and change in order to carry on- commented coach Carroll.

The Chargers definitely gave a guide on how to face the brilliant Seahawks for the rest of the league. By cleverly combining rushes and passing they managed to hold on to the ball for more than 42 minutes and achieve 26 first attempts as opposed to just 14 by the Seattle team.

-They did a great job on third attempts, keeping their offenses alive and wearing out our defense- remarked Russell Wilson, who managed to get 393 passing yards and four touchdowns with no intercepts so far, and has an incredible 18-1 score as a starter at the Century Link Field.

The defeat must hurt for the Seahawks, but they'll soon forget it when they face the Broncos tonight. The Broncos have made numerous changes in summer in order to be able to parry defensively strong teams. The first two matches showed they still need tuning up, as they held a strong lead but struggled to win in the end. Against the Colts the game was decided in the last minutes, and the same scenario happened again against the Chiefs, who even had a good shot at tying the game in the very finish, but the Broncos managed to hold on to their lead to the end.

- We've entering the third week with  a 2-0 score, undefeated, that's as good as it gets. We've got many goals and everyone expects us to win every week, starting with the fans and media, but this is the NFL. The teams playing against us every week treat it like the Super Bowl- said cornerback Chris Harris.

Part of the problem for the Broncos is their offense, who scored 686 yards in the first two matches, 228.6 less than last year. There is little one can say to Peyton Manning about it, as he has six touchdowns with no intercepts and the best passer rating in the league (126.5), and is likely happy to have Wes Welker on the team tonight, who is returning after his suspension. Welker caught 73 passes for 778 yards in 13 games last year, which speaks volumes on how important he is for the team, especially with Eric Decker gone to the Jets now.

- There are not many matches that end 58-0 in this league. There are reasons for concern, but looking at the first quarter of the season, all the teams we're facing won ten games last year. Now we're facing the defending champions. I don't think any NFL team plays their best football in their second week, including us. Everyone is trying to improve, and I hope we do best when it's most important, in the playoff- say coach John Fox.

The Broncos spent a lot of money on defense during the summer, adding some power and speed to it so that they don't depend solely on Manning's inspiration. Today's duel will show if they're on the right track, although a loss would not mean the end of the world. For the Broncos the crucial ting will be to stop Marshawn Lynch, who has minor back issues but should be on the field.

If the away team manage to neutralize him their chances of winning improve drastically, but they also have to pressure the Seahawks defense, as they allow just 13.3 on average in matches where Wilson starts, and allowed more than 20 on just two occasions.

Player total rushing yards: Montee Ball 70,5 tip: under   Spužva
Odds Stake Min. odds Bookmaker
1.85 5/10 1.70 Bwin
I have no idea how the bookmakers got this margin. Montee Ball isn't near being the elite running back, nor is he playing in the system that depends on rushing yards, nor did he go over this margin in the first two matches, and he'll also face the best defense of the league. In the first two matches, Ball got 67 and 60 yards in 23 and 12 assists, and the Seahawks defense is definitely much better than the one in the Colts or the Chiefs. Besides, the Broncos lead by far in those matches and could afford to be more conservative, a luxury they won't have tonight. Compared to the last year, the Broncos fixed their offensive line, but I don't think that'll show in Seattle, where the most difficult away games are played. Last year in the finals, the Seahawks limited the Denver team to only 27 rushing yards (in 14 assists), and even though both teams had a few minor "cosmetic" changes, I don't think tonight will be much different. All in all, in the pass-happy system against the best defense of the league, I can't not bet on Ball with this margin.
