Jacksonville - NY Giants (25:24)

The schedule finally favorable for the Giants, but it's probably too late now

  • Published:

Giants are on a 6-game losing run after meeting all the best teams of the league. The Jaguars are not among the best teams and the viistors should be able to win tonight

Jacksonville have came to terms with play-off being mission impossible a long time ago. They won only one out of the 11 games and remain bottom league when it comes to pretty much all stats regarding offense, including points on average (14.6) and yards (304.1). The Colts had three fumbles in their head-to-head game but Jacksonville's offense recorded only 194 yards anyway.

- Defense-wise, I think we played well. I'm happy with the effort the guys put it. Some guys are at a very high level, especially in the first half. We forced them into 3 fumbles, which is not bad, but we you don't use your chances, you can't win - coach Bradley said after fourth consecutve defeat.

The Jags' coach was particularly worried about Blake Bortles' mental state after his worst performance this season. He completed 15 out of 27 passes for only 146 yards, most of which they got in the last quarter, when everything was basically settled. The Colts intercepted him once.

- I hope fear hasn't taken over. I hope he's not thinking about his mistakes or that everything he does needs to be good. We don't want those kind of thoughts - coach Bradley said.

Bortles' 15 interceptions definitively didn't help the team that remain bottom league in most stats. They allow 388.2 yards and their opponents record 27.7, which is exactly what New York Giants need to end their 6-game winning run. They were losing to top teams (the Eagles, Dallas twice, the Colts, the Seahawks, the 49ers). It's clear that Couglin's men will not make it in the play off third consecutive season, but they want to use the remaining games to set a good foundation for the next season.

- When you spend two or three years with the same team, it makes you tougher and more relaxed. We have some new guys and I hope we'll stay together for a few years to be able to do something special. I think we can start now. It's time. I think we made progress, some things are better than before and it's still not late to get hot - Eli Manning said. He passed for 338 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception in the defeat to Cowboys home.

The Giants will be on a less tough schedule the next four games (Jags, Titans, Skins, Rams). Their combined record against those teams is 10-34 and the chance seems to be very good to improve their record those season.

In order to do so, they need to bring the defense up a notch. It hasn't been performing great so far, but it will be tough enough for the Jaguars. The team from New York have a good pass rush and are capable of putting pressure on Bortles. Jacksonville aren't too good in defense either and Manning should be able to take advantage of it. Either way, the Giants should be able to end their losing streak.

The way this game is set is a typical example of reading the context wrong. A look on the table or the results could give a hint that these are two equal teams, but this is a clash of two opposite worlds in quality. The Jaguards are a bad team who can't finish the game without losing two or three balls which often cost them lots of points, while the Giants are a decent team whose destiny was made with an amazing set of circumstances. The New York guys lost six games in a row, but all those defeats were against the best teams (Eagles, Dallas twice, Colts, Seahawks, 49ers) who will probably end up in the playoffs. No way Tom Coughlin will afford a new blunder, and in Jackonsville, against one of the worst teams of the league. To keep it short, the Giants are two tiers better than the home team, and even if I were completely wrong, Manning seems a much better choice than the QB who's been cut 15 times this season.
