Panathinaikos - Zalgiris (91:56)

A top-quality game of chess in Athens

  • Published:

Diamantidis, Calathes, Kalnietis, Seibutis and others guarantee a smart, well-organized, typical European basketball and a game that could be settled in a very close end

Panathinaikos opened the season bursting with optimism, which got even bigger when they recorded two wins over Olympiacos. However, Euroleague has so far not given Panathinaikos any reason to be happy as they lost all three away games to get on a 1-3 record, which means there is no room for any more slips. The home games against Zalgiris and Lokomotiv are up next and the Athens-based team is definitely under pressure.

Panathinaikos are still displaying problems they were dealing with last season. Their performances away are not as good as those home and not only in Euroleague. PAO struggle in the Greek championship as well. They faced Rethymno away and struggled to win even though Djordjevic wanted a good performance ahead of the game at Patras on Monday. They opened that game well to take a double-digit lead but Apollon even had a narrow lead in the final quarter before Panathinaikos settled the game.

- I'm glad the players showed character. These kind of wins are very important for confidence - Djordjevic said.

That kind of a game was good enough for Apollon but if it was an Euroleague game, PAO would have most likely lost again. Luckily, they are returning to the OAKA Arena today where they always do better. Things will not be easy regardless of that since they have to win given the situation in the table (they're in spot 4 with Karsiyaka and Stelmet) and Zalgiris are a tough and well-experienced team capable of playing for the final score.

- Following two consecutive defeats, our goal is to get back to winning and I'm sure our fans will help us with that. We are playing a tough team that we respect a lot - Djordjevic said.

Panathinaikos will be without Pappas and Bochoridish, who have been injured for a while. Gist got back to practicing but he's still questionable. Kalathes broke a finger but he should be on the team for this game.

Talking about Zalgiris' games in the domestic championship makes no sense because they win them so easy that their training sessions are normally tougher than the games. That is definitely their upper hand since they can focus on the European games entirely. That is why they opened Euroleague that well this season, which cannot be said about Panthinaikos.

- Our opponents clearly cannot be happy with this result and this game will be very important for them. They're a great team but they're still adjusting to the new coach and the new players. But we can't let that fool us, they are still a top-quality team.

Zalgiris have a lot of quality as well, especially because the team is complete this week and Krapkis finally has 12 healthy players at his disposal. That will be especially important in the paint where they now have a player capable of stopping Raduljica and Kuzmic. The plan will stay the same - to focus on defense and try and record another away win.

- We can't let them take an early lead. We have to control the pace and try to stay close until the very end - Krapikas said.

This will be an European classic because these teams have brilliant history. They were very ambitious at the start of this season and a lot will depend on this game today. Zalgiris know they have to focus on tough defense and slowing the game down, while the Greek team won't rush into anything either. With Diamantidis and Kalnietis at point guard position, this could be like a game of chess that could be decided in the very end.

I warned about Zalgiris a few times this season. They are an extremely well-experienced and good-quality team that acquired players like Motum, Vougioukas, and Hanland, which gave them extra dimension. They are playing great basketball this season, which especially goes for defense. The defensive end never allowed more than 70 points this season and only Barcelona hit over 76 against them. A well-experienced team like then won't rush into anything today and will most definitely put good pressure on PAO, who are still looking for the top game. I don't think this will be a blow-out. On the contrary, I think Zalgiris have more chance of winning. The under at home team seems like the best option because I would not be surprised if PAO got limited to under 70 points.
