SAMPO are one of Finland's legendary clubs, but their results haven't been that good in the last few years. This season they want to come back to Top 5 and they managed to gather a solid team with Estonians Raadik and national team setter Keelo. Then they have Mutka and Katraasalo, the experienced Sivonen and Heiskanen... They had a great pre-season period, they beat two strong Top 5 Baltic League clubs (Selver Tallin 3-1, Flamigno 3-1) at a strong tournament in Estonia and with hosts and the winners of the last season's Baltic League Parnuo they were at 2-2 and won the tournament. They also won one tournament in Finland by beating none other than LEKA in the finals with 25-17, 25-18, 25-14 which were at the time without the important Helenius. Their last check-up was against Riento and they won another one at home with 3-1. LEKA lost all of their last season's foreigners (Petty, Johnson, Austin) who had key roles, and they found their replacement in young Finnish players. They had a lot of problems in the pre-season period, but they had two matches against Riento for the start of the championship. They won at home with 3-1, but they were beaten with 3-0 in an away game (15-25, 21-25, 24-26). The new shock came in the first round of the Cup three days ago. They barely beat second-league Maaningen Mahti with 3-2 with their strongest line-up. SAMPO covered this handicap twice last season (+6 away, +16 home) in three matches, and LEKA were a lot stronger at that time. The bookies obviously look at last season's teams while today the situation is different. With it we have a head-to-head result in the pre-season period. SAMPO won with 26 points of difference at neutral grounds, and the fact that LEKA were without Helenius doesn't change the situation that much. Details

Last season Salzburg were the worst team in the league with a 1-17 record in the regular part, and they lost matches with the average 24 points of difference, even when they would take a set. In the playout they have two wins (Klagenfurt, Weiz) when the opponents secured their stay, and that says enough about their quality. This season the story won't be any different. The team are the same, a mix of casual players and students, and they mostly lost through the pre-season period. They were hosts of the Toros Cup and they were sixth in a competition of eight clubs out of which one were from the Czech second league, one a mediocre Swiss first league, one Austrian second league club, and two first league clubs. Hypo's story is different. They gathered their strongest team in Innsbruck. The Turkish national team player, technician Yenipazar, Masilev with Champions League and Superleague experience are huge new additions for them, and out of important players they basically didn't lose anyone. Today they'll be without opposite Teppan who is with Estonia's national team, but that's not going to be important against Salzburg. They had great results in the pre-season (ZAKSA 2-3, Jastrzebski 2-3, Herrsching 3-2, Effector Kielce 3-1), and without Teppan. The expert, coach Gavan, said he expect the players to be fully involved today, and that they want to open up the championship with a good edition. Their head-to-heads last season remained at 120 (in Salzburg) and 118 points. Salzburg's matches against Posojilnica, Austria's second strongest club, was at 112 (Salzburg, first round) and 126 points, against Waldviertel (third last year) at 120 and 129 (Salzburg), and Hypo crushed those teams (Posojilnice in the finals, Waldviertel in the semi-finals). Hypo also opened the last season by an away match against the stronger Weiz, and the match ended at 126 points. Today it should go under considering the difference in quality. Details

This match seems to be most important since it's for a direct qualification to EC. The Dutch saved themselves from defeat against Belarus yesterday by making a comeback int he fifth set. That means they are exhausted while the Turks had it easy with Austria. All of that is not important here because both teams will try their absolute best. They met three times this season, twice in World League and last week in Turkey. Turkey won the World League game in straight set but that one was not as important as the following two meetings. The game for spot three of World League FF Division 2 was won by the Dutch 3-1. It finished at 200 points. The Dutch won again last week (203 points, 3-2 in sets). Out of 12 sets that were played, 5 were extremely close (23-25, 30-28, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23). This margin is set based on the average number of points in there head-to-head matches (180,66) but the two more important games the average was over 200. The Dutch are the favorites because they play home which is not right. Both teams will go full throttle and even though I really like the option that Turkey take two sets, I decided to go with points over because this bet can be successful even with 4 sets and an average number of points. I'll start with Portugal's win in straight sets over Finland last week. They won the first two in rather lucky manner but beating Finland in straight sets cannot be a coincidence. That is why I was surprised that the bookies see Finland as the favorites here. I have to admit the Portuguese surprised me in qualifiers, especially in offense where a few of their players often goes over 10 points. Only Finland had that so far. Portugal won only one of the 4 games in straight sets. Finals also one and their matches against Denmark and Sweden finished well over. Portugal have 190 and 188 points with Denmark, 210 with Sweden, while Finland have 167 in 4 sets with Denmark and 180 and 145 points with Sweden. This is the key match for the top spot and stakes are high which, as a rule, means a battle for each point. They have a match in 5 sets this season (214 points) from World League which was also played in Finland. Going a bit further back in the past, only two out of 8 h2h matches were settled in straight sets. They went over this margin 6 times (179, 209, 193, 183, 207, 219). That combined with how important this game is, the h2h record and the quality of these teams, 174,5 seems really low. I don't think we'll see just three sets. That seems realistic only in a crazy game by Finland, which they have not displayed so far. A realistic margin is at least 5-6 points higher. Details

The Czech Republic came back from Romania with three wins and a comfortable situation they can get knocked out of only with a miracle. Macedonia are in an opposite situation, with no wins and chances to reach the second place which are non-existent. The Czech Republic won last week with 3-1 (15 small points of difference), but the difference could have easily gone to 20+ points had there been no relaxing in the fourth set finals. Technician Despotovski is responsible for Macedonia's better game in the second set. He won't be playing today. Next to his absence, former selector Ristoski publicly attacked the Macedonian Volleyball Federation due to conditions the national team have to work, in, middle blocker Josifov announced he will leave the national team if something doesn't change, and definitely the focus is not on volleyball. The Czech have +15 against Macedonia, +24 against Romania and +22 against Estonia and this margin seems too low. Details

Both teams opened the tournament in Rovinj with a win but there was a big difference between them given their game. While the Israelis beat Croatia with a lot of luck, Latvia outplayed Slovakia 3-1. That is what they wanted from the first game because they and the Slovaks had the same number of wins and points. Wins are the first criterion. But they had worse set and point difference which could decide on the top spot and a direct qualification to EC. Israel's win over Croatia should not impress anyone because Croatia are without form and rhythm at the moment. Latvia won a head-to-head from last week 3-1, by 13 total points. Coach Vilde said they didn't have too much info on Israel. The win over Slovakia will give them a lot of confidence but more importantly, they need to try and win as convincingly as possible. If they won by 13 last week, I don't see why the same wouldn't happen today, especially given the motivation at Latvia and the obvious difference in quality. Details

Estonia are a serious team and rarely lose 0-3 and that proves that the Czechs are very well prepared. They have done a great job yesterday with a win and took a big step towards the top spot. There is no room for holding back, given how qualifiers are organized. Macedonia are a limited team when it comes to every segment. Yesterday was a proof that they struggle with well-organized team. For comparison's sake, Estonia beat Macedonia by 20 points in European League final. The Czechs beat that same Estonia by 22. The -14,5 looks very good given all that. Details

It is obvious that Gazprom Ugra Surgut will have a tough time doing as good as they did in the last seasons. Top player and the most efficient player in the league from last season Bakun left, as well as top middle blocker Apalikov, top libero Kabeshov, very important Iereshchenko, Astashekov, Getman. Thius team is no 50 percent weaker compared to the last season. Top setter Brdjovic isn't at coach's disposal today, just like receiver Semyshev. It seems like middle blocker Krsmanovic won't be there either. The other setter Panchenko won't play with an injury which means Kupryzahkin will be organizing the game. Also, they came here directly from Sichi, where the team's been preparing. They mostly played on sand there and don't have any matches on this surface. Yenisej trashed Univezitet Barnaul in straight sets yesterday. This will be their 5th match of the season and we can say they have rhythm, compared to their opponents, who don't. Gazprom lost in Krasnoyarsk in straight sets last season with Bakun, Iereshchenko, Apalikov and Brđović. They probably won't do much better today. I even think we should have -2,5 at Yenisey here. The Polish crushed the Germans in the last round, and I think Slovenia will get just the same treatment. Poland need to win in straight sets to get to the semifinal, and would be more relaxed in the last round against Bulgaria. Slovenia hoped to pass the group, but with three defeats in three rounds, they know their adventure is over. Of course, that won't make them less motivated, but their limitations were obvious so far. They had luck in winning a set against Germany, and Bulgaria and Ukraine crushed them in straight sets. Now the important part - Slovenia played 126 against Bulgaria, 123 points against Ukraine, and 185 against Germany. That's because of the first set Slovenia won 27-25, even though Germany had 17-21, but looking at the set the Germans won, the match would've ended at 133 points. The Polish went far over against France, then 134 against Ukraine and 128 against Germany. Also, Poland are getting better with each game, their serve started working against Germany, they crush their opponent when they smell blood, and since they had a day to rest, I don't think they'll be relying on math. Besides, their captain Kochanowski said they definitely won't underestimate Slovenia because a straight sets win would secure the first place. That might not be true completely, but at least the second place and the semifinal. It's interesting that Poland were in the same situation in the last year's cadet European Championship, after three rounds. They had two wins in straight and one in five sets, and then a day after a rest, they crushed France 25-9, 25-16 and 25-17. The Polish should win this under 129 points even with only 70-80% of their strength invested. Details

    - We don't need any special motivation for the matches against Germany because no matter where we face them, these games against them are 'different'. We have faced them in the qualifications and we didn't allow them much. I hope we will demolish Germany - said Polish opposite Ziobowski. This statement shows that the Poles will give their max today, and they will probably be motivated more than ever. The rivalry between Germany and Poland is well known, but the Poles are holding the 'keys' to the game in their hands. They already faced each other this year, in Frankfurt, and it was 25-17, 25-17 and 25-12 for Poland, who were at their max the entire time and they did not hold back, so I think it will be the same today, they might try even harder. So they will be motivated both because of the rivalry and because of the battle for the semi-final. Germany played an exhausting game yesterday, they won and that will lift their confidence, but quality-wise they are not as good as their opponents. Everything here will depend solely on Poland, and the way they approach the game. The lineups are the same as in the qualifications, the only exception are the German libero and Polish setter Droszynski, so that result can be taken into account here. We should add that in that game Polish setter was Kozub instead of Droszynski. Germany are not known as a team with good reception and Poland will have superiority there, and when we add to that the fact that they have enough reserve when it comes to serving, I expect them to gain an advantage there. Kwolek, Fornal and Zlobrowski are players for whom Germany won't have any solutions and I believe that Pawlik's team will win in straight sets. Details

New season of the Russian CUp is starting in Ufa, and Ural, Dynamo Moscow, Neftyanik and two second division sides, MGTU and Gazprom Stavropol, are in Group B. Ural are starting this season with great ambitions, they are financially stable, they acquired great players and Bashkoristan's governor expects them to reach the Top and a good performance in the Cup. Acquired players worth mentioning are opposite Moroz, Kritskiy, Getman, receiver Shipotko, and they have kept their best players, receivers Kutsmus, Feoktistov, setter Kovalev. In the pre-season, coach Grebennikov only couldn't count on Volkov who was in Rio, and the most important thing is that Kovalev went through the entire pre-season and that he is not 'spent' from national team obligations. The situation at Stavropol is different. They lost all key players from last season (Kobilev, Aksyutin, Zhos, Pyatirkin, Susanin, Svidlov, Klyapnev...). The reason for that are finances, and they haven't even completed the roster. They came to Ufa with only nine players, only two setters and one libero Vishnevetskiy, who is, with Atanashenkov, the only one who 'survived' the sell out. Looking at the results in the Russian second division last season, Stavropol were horrible away with a 7-15 record, and most of those wins came while Kobilev, Aksyutin and Zhos were on the team. With that, Ufa have a rather young team, only setter Ivanov is over 24 years of age. Their championship will start in a month, while Ural's will start a week earlier, so there is difference in fitness. On one side we have ambitious home team with several world class players and based on their statements they will give their max at this tournament, and on the other side we have a second division side who lost all key players from last season and haven't completed their roster. It is important to mention that two tournaments are being played, and that three teams advance from each group, so every point will be important. The difference in quality, experience and current form is on Ural's side and I cannot see how Stavropol can do anything here. Details

Poland managed to pull themselves through a tough situation yesterday and they took that as a warning. They are a 'machine' which was very visible against France yesterday. They made 22 mistakes, 15 on serve, in the fist two sets and only 8 after that. They limited France to 15 points and to 22 in the fourth set bu they had a 21-15 lead and saved power for the fifth set. Ukraine won the war with Bulgaria but even losing wouldn't be undeserved. It was obvious that they struggle with consistency but Bulgaria were even worse. I've chosen the first set under because I expect Poland to start fiercely and in that case, Ukraine won't have much say. Poland won all the sets under this margin (44,5) at EC last year, except in the first match with Italy. They played a set at 40 points (25-15 in the final), at 41 against Russia (2-16). They allowed Turkey to get 19. Those teams are better than Ukraine. They limited the French to 9 points, Serbia and Denmark to 15, while they limited Slovakia and Belarus in EC qualifiers to 19. In qualifiers for this championship, they have an over with Denmark and then unders with Hungary (25-18) and Germany (25-17). They limited Germany in the playoff to 17 points. Ukraine have more overs than unders at this margin but none of the opponents were close to Poland in quality. Poland have 11 unders and 3 ovres at this margin when it comes to EC or WC qualifiers. Looking at their record at WC last season, they are 14-6. They went into overs with powerful Iran and Australia, in the semis and final. Ukraine spent 154 minutes on the floor yesterday and used up a lot of energy. Their two important players didn't show up for preparation period and I don't see them going 20+ here. Details

The Czech Republic and Sweden will play as part of the pre-season for the September qualifications for the EC. Both teams mentioned fatigue, and that all of the players will get a chance. Even though the match is led as official, this is not the first head-to-head between these two countries. They already played four times, but all of the matches were closed for public. The results, however, are known.

    Wednesday

    The Czech Republic - Sweden 3-1 (25-20, 26-24, 22-25, 31-29)
    The Czech Republic - Sweden 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 22-25)

    Thursday

    The Czech Republic - Sweden 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23)
The Czech Republic - Sweden 2-2 (23-5, 29-31, 25-23, 25-22) - the match ended due to lack of time

So, in four matches we've seen 202, 235 (188 in four sets), 235 (187 in four sets) and 203 points. There were a lot of rotations in both teams because both of them are still up for a lot of matches, and today's one should be no exception. The experienced Marcus Nilsson is now available for Sweden, their best player and leader, and that was noticeable in game. The Czech Republic is undergoing the process of making their team younger, and a lot of young players are fighting for the positions in the qualifications. On the other hand, the Swedish selector Isacsson pointed out that he wants to see the results of the work he's made in the past period. Both teams are quite young, and because of that prone to oscillating, and since it's the early phase of preparations, everything points out to an uncertain fifth head-to-head. They went over the offered margin in all matches, even in four sets, so this is ripe for the taking. Details

Brazil and France have used the potential of their players since 2013 (at the time France was taken over by Laurent Tillie), they played six head-to-heads out of which one was friendly, and the numbers are terrifying. The points were: 189, 13, 206 (in four sets), 213, 195 and 209. The average of points on this six matches is 204.1, and even if we disregard the friendly (213), we're on an average of 202 points which is far more than today's margin. For comparison's sake, we can take matches with the same teams in World League, so Brazil have a big over with Belgium, as well as France; under with Poland (I'm not counting the French over on Final Six because Poland finally played as a whole team), and interestingly enough that in the two out of three matches in which Brazil were the favorites, they lost. Brazil left a better impression in Krakow, but France definitely have a team who can deal with their game. Besides, N'Gapeth and company are masters for tour matches. Six uncertain matches of these teams are no coincidence, today details should decide the winners, and I see this match at 188+ points, just like the last one two weeks ago. The offered margin is tied to the odds on Brazil which are unrealistic. Details

We have a similar story to the one with Spain and Taiwan from this morning. Turkey have never played a team from the Far East in their history, which is a big problem. That kind of a fanatic defense is not something you can learn to deal with just by watching a video. The Turks finished the first tournament with three wins but B/C Slovakia team, the unmotivated Portuguese and the Dutch who are rebuilding the team aren't the kind of opponents that could impress me. Japan went to Cairo with an identical team which played the first tournament, with Shimizu, Yoneyam, Yanagid and I don't think they're the underdogs against the average Turkey. Granted, Turkey are physically more powerful but the Japanese have more experince against these kind of teams. Turkey have never been faced with this kind of a game style. The odds we have at 1,5 handicap here should be the odds at Japan's win. Details

I've seen all the matches these two teams played in the last tournament and I don't see why the Spaniards are so favored. They've lost a set in each game, Mexico almost beat them, and even Germany C lineup found a way to get them to the fourth set. Taiwan made one mistake in Kozaniy (0-3 against Kazakhstan), but have beaten Puerto Rico routinely and were evened out to Greece with Đurić for almost three sets. The Spaniards traveled almost 40 hours to Almaty, and the Taiwanse came from Greece, so they spent less time for the trip. So, tactically, I'd say that Taiwan have the advantage because they played team similar to the Spaniards in Kozaniy, and the Spaniards will face the Asian fast game for the first time in he last two years. Taiwan are similar to China who have beaten Spain two times in the World League two years ago, and the Spaniards were stronger then. Long trip, changing a few time zones and the opponent's game style - all of this tells me that this game is going to be more intense and evened out than the bookmakers think, and the odds for the Taiwanse set should be a lot lower. The stats say that Serbia and Brazil played 15 matches until 2008 and that only one finished with 3-0 result. Last year they played four matches, three of which were decided in the fifth set, and over 200 points, and one finished at 179 points. But let's move on, out of the 15 matches in the last 8 years, 10 of them finished with the 3-2 result and over 200 points, and of the last 5 official matches, 4 went over today's margin. And if we add to that the friendly match, we have 5/6 overs in their latest matches. Both teams are in great form, Serbia haven't lost a set, Brazil lost one against the USA, but sold out Pionir Arena will be a strong asset for the home team. There isn't much philosophy here, the scenario of at least 4 sets is very likely, and that should be enough to go over the set margin. Details

I saw both games in Varna yesterday. While the Macedonians took a long time to break Albania, the Danes displayed 'atomic' basketball compared to the first game against Bulgaria. They lost by literally one point, having squandered the 2-0 lead away. The Macedonians didn't get even close to dropping a set against Albania. Who knows how the game would have gone had they not been able to make up for the 8-14 deficit in the first set. Their straight sets win did nothing to impress me. Gjorgiev played alone and that worked against Albania but it will not work against Denmark today. The Macedonian's lack of offensive power is evident. Ljaftov had just 37 percent efficient against a very bad Albanian block. Mihalov got just 4 balls in the whole game because he's the libero, not the receiver. The second setter (!?!) and the younger Gjorgjev brother had to play the receiver position at moments, which says it all about their struggle with that position.

    2015
    MCD – DEN 2-3 (27-29, 25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 16-18)
    MCD – DEN 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 26-24)

    2014
    MCD – DEN 3:2 (25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-8)
    MCD – DEN 3:0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-22)

Those are the results from previous h2h matches. All 4 were played Macedonia before packed stands. Macedonia has been doing their best the last two years, especially in 2015. They reached the Final Four both times but Denmark always caused them problems. Compared with 2015, they are without Simovski, Milev, Gjorgjevskog and Karanovic. Looking back to matches from 2014, we need to add Nikolovski to the list of absent players. Denmark, on the other hand, play with an almost identical team. The Danish coach said the key matches for them are those with Macedonia and Albania in Varna. The point they got yesterday was just a bonus. I'd say this is the key match for Denmark because if they go 1-2, getting back to Varna early July will be tough. Yesterday's win over Macedonia cannot convince me they can be favorites against Denmark. This is the clash between Gjorgiev and Denmark. The win for the Danes is a very good bet. Details

The neighbors are set to meet in Varna today. There are big difference with these teams when it comes to the preparation period. I'll start with the Macedonians who struggled a lot with players and the relations within the Federation. Coach Ristoski invited 21 players to join initially but only 10 of them actually did. The well experimented receivers Milev and Milkov decline the invitations, just like middle blocker Nikolov. Mandzukov is injured while Gjorgjevski and Karanovic retired. The greatest of all shocks was Simovski leaving the team just a few days ago with family problems. The Macedonians had to change their tactics after that. Also, even though Ristoski signed a new deal, there is inside information which says he will leave after European League. The problems don't end there. They couldn't find a sparring partner and haven't played any test games before this. Last year, they lost to Estonia 9-25, 19-25, 18-25 in the same situation. Albania are not Estonia but they're back at this scene after two years. Coach Melka got the team together in early May and a good preparation period. The two matches with Montenegro proved that. The first one was played with top players and they got a set while losing the other three 22-25, 20-25 and 20-25. They lost the other one in straight sets without Xhelati and Husaj. On the one hand, we have a team with no test games and without 6 players and on the other, there is a team which had good preparations and got a set against Montenegro. Macedonia won in straight sets two years ago but they were in top form back then while Albania didn't have Husaj and had serious problems. That game isn't relevant. The value is in all options at Albania. The counter handicap and point over are good bets. I'll go with the set for Albania given everything I talked about before. Details

Estonia were at European league Final Four last year and have just one goal this season - to win it and get into World League next year. The coach has gathered all the best player expect for receiver Jukhami, who is struggling with an injury. He's not a key player anyway. The coach has Kreek (Paris), receivers Pupart and Taht (Cuprum Lubin), opposite Venno (Ziraat) and Teppan (Hypo Tirol), setter Tooba at his disposal. All of them were there when the team reached EC Round of 16 last year and squandered a 2-0 lead against Serbia. Things are different at Belarus. Their top players failed to join the team for EC last season and the coach was without ten players who earned a spot in EC and Europaen league. Belarus did horribly, not getting a single set in three matches at that championship. Estonia have very good serve and I expect Belarus to struggle with reception, and in turn, with attacking. European league this season requires every team to play 6 matches instead of 10 this summer. That means there is no room for error. Since Estonia want to make it to Final Four badly, they cannot open this with a slip. Belarus are far from an ideal team, while Estonia have a lot of motivation. Estonia had 10-0 last season, Belarus 3-7 with a much better team. The odds at this handicap should be much lower. Details
