Left-handed players suit Verdasco. His record against them is 55-25. Half of those 25 defeats were to Nadal, which makes the record even more impressive. These conditions agree with him and I believe him to be well prepared. His cooperation with Enqvisto should result in improvements. Young finally managed to win a few consecutive matches on clay. I was not surprised by his win against Monaco since the Argentinian didn't do a proper match in a while now. That passive game was what helped the American, but he won't be the one controlling the rallies here. The Spaniard's shots have a lot more spin, he can change his game accordingly, and his serving is better. Of course, ups and downs are a possibility, but I expect him to be able to cover for this handicap in three sets if necessary. When motivated, and he is motivated now, he's far better than Young on clay surface. Details

First rounds and Isner - so typical. Even this season, despite starting it off well since the beginning, the story repeats itself. He did six tournaments this season. He forfeited in Melbourne, but only his match against Davydenko wasn't over. Most of those first matches were against weaker opponents, so Lacko, Young, and Russell managed to win a set. Brown did very well the first round, he can win a set against anyone. Literally anyone. Isner will probably not risk anything, as he usually does before relaxing after a few wins. Given everything, this is a logical option, and I believe that the German will win a set. Details

Haase is one of the rare bigger names that didn't have Davis Cup obligations. The Dutch player certainly could use the break as he had problems with his back but he claims to have found the right exercises and that he's ready. Nedovyesov is a challenger player and these tournaments have put him in Top 100. Until he proves his worth on this level, I will bet against him. He still doesn't have an ATP win and he might have additional problems here as he played in the Davis Cup. In Switzerland, he helped Kazakhstan with a win in the doubles match but he and Nedovyesov got four games here against a much weaker pair. Haase reached the quarter-finals here last year and he should be able to settle this matter in two sets. Clay is his favorite surface, as he admits himself, while this will be the first ATP match on clay for the Kazakh player. Details

Even though Peliwo is a talented player with a bright future, he's a huge outsider here. The Canadian has passed the qualifications quite unexpectedly as clay is not his favorite surface. He beat Volandri but he just made use of his chance against a player struggling with age, form and injuries. Delbonis beat Simon yesterday without losing his serve. The Frenchman had three qualification rounds to prepare and was still powerless. Regardless of what we think of Simon, he rarely loses without getting a break. That says a lot about the confidence and the consistence of the Argentine who won his last tournament on clay. That power, confidence and quality should be enough to beat the talented but still inexperienced Canadian. Details

Carreno improved significantly by playing on clay. He started proving himself at this tournament precisely when he managed to get through qualifying matches to beat Andujar, who was then defending the title. True, his record is 1-8 this season, but the change is about to happen now. He had plenty of time to prepare, these are his conditions, and Kamke has been in an entirely different place. The German played every single out of the three Davis Cup days in France. He managed to surprise Benneteau, then lost the doubles match, and finally met Tosnga on Sunday and couldn't do anything. He seemed pretty drained mentally, because playing three matches in three days in best of five sets format is not easy. He now has to switch to clay from hard court, and he's meeting an opponent who will not let go. The Spaniard is a patient player, he's not giving anything away, and I think he's ideal for this situation. He should be able to use this opportunity. Details

I pushed Goffin in the parlay section, and he won decisively every time, losing only 11 games in three matches. Yesterday he limited Cecchinato to just four games, while that same Italian covered this handicap against the Spaniard twice last month. Truth be told, Carballes went through the qualifications contrary to expectations, but as I wrote, Goffin is Top 50 material, if not even better. Carballes played just one ATP match in his career and Davydenko limited him to five games in that match last year. If the Russian player, who managed to make thing s complicated in most such matches, won that one decisively, I have no doubt Goffirn will continue with the performances he gave over the last three days. Houston no longer have green clay and the bounce is a bit lower and the conditions are faster than on the classic red clay. Karlović won the title here seven years ago but that was a different time. Even though Ivo is in good form, I am surprised by such low margins. It's probably the surface. He has played against sock twice and the match went into the third set on both occasions. Two months ago in Memphis, they played two tie-breaks without a break and Ivo broke the young American in the third set. Sock played five extended sets in two matches against Isner, last year he played a three-set match. Against Raonic, he has 2 three-set matches and one defeat from a few weeks ago. It's obvious he doesn't fear great big servers, which is crucial for matches against Karlović. This can go through in two sets, although I wouldn't be surprised if the third set occurs considering the time both of them will need to adjust. And that is the reason why I expect a somewhat weaker performance on the return. Details

The bet is for Puig to win with 3+ games of a lead. I won't say Pennetta tanked in Monterrey, but she seemed very relaxed after the loss, when she said she can't wait to get home and rest after a tough USA tour. Date took advantage of what was offered there as the Italian made a lot of mistakes. After that she beat Babos, a one-trick player who could not win through sheer power. Puig did not have a tough draw, but impressed. In the first round she won 11 straight games, and in the second did not allow a break point. She was the most impressive player up to the quarterfinal. The conditions suit her, she was in the Top 50 last year, and despite being only 20 years old, she has Top 20 potential. The Japanese is phenomenal, no doubt about it, and has experience on her side here, but that's an empty statement. She hasn't played a WTA quarterfinal in almost 4 years. Vekić beat her in Miami, Shvedova left her without a game won in the third set a month ago. She complains of the heat and humidity, and a full week in play isn't easy at her age. Puig has the firepower to impose herself, and I believe the Japanese will struggle to find the strength as the match draws longer. That's why I'm taking the handicap, as Puig can cover it even if there is a third set. Details

Wawrinka is ranked 3rd in the world and has just won the Australian Open, but he is the most nervous Top 10 players in home court. There are many examples, and after losing in Basel of Gstaad he says the same thing - really want to play well at home, and the pressure gets to me. Last year he lost to Roger-Vasselin in Basel, and in Gstaad forfeited while two games away from a loss. The year before he dropped out of both tournaments as a favorite, in the first round, both in two tie breaks. The Davis Cup is the same: Emilio Gomez took 10 games from him last year, and we're talking about a player out of Top 250 who usually doesn't play on concrete. He lost a lot of important matches, also spoke of being nervous and three years ago Gil, another pure clay player, went over this margin in the same conditions. Unlike him, Golubev is a Davis Cup player, meaning he played best in this competition, often much better than his ranking, and is fine with being an outsider. He was not defeated at home, has beaten the likes of Berdych and Melzer, and even remembers a win against Wawrinka in one match, while taking at least 4 games per set in the other two although he forfeited in the second set of the Australian Open this year. Mentally, this is the toughest possible situation for Wawrinka, as everyone sees him winning, it's a full court and he is the top billed player of the team. If he was nervous before, this will be much worse. This margin can go with three sets, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Swiss ended up in trouble. He is also having some minor issues with his shoulder, but that's an added bonus, not a reason for choosing this bet. Details

Morita played the first match of the Australian Open. She injured her hip and a problem with her wrist so she didn't train too much. She said herself that she has no expectations from this week. She beat Niculescu after saving two match points. The Romanian suits her and this was her third win in three H2H's. The Japanese is technically strong and knows how to play against her. Now she's facing Rybarikova who will not try to outwit her. Her powerful game can impose the rhythm that Morita cannot match at the moment. The Japanese has been out of action for too long while the Slovakian showed the conditions suit her. That's why this handicap seems very well, especially as it can be covered in three sets, should something like that even happen. Details

Pavic and Groth are looking to reach their first challenger title ever. This is the first final for the Croatian player, while the Austrian lost all three he played. In two of those the opponents won the third set 7-6. Groth is a great server, but serving is Pavic's great weapon as well. He surprised with his game against the service here, only Nishioka managed to win a set against him. I think this match can go either way and none of the opponents is the favorite. Due to the fact they are both looking to win their first challenger title, I believe that the nerves will play the crucial role. But, most importantly, this will not be a one-sided match. Even in the worst case scenario, the two of them can win their service games with ease. So, the margin can be good in two sets, but I expect a great battle in three sets anyway. Details

Sock already has three wins in Miami, which will boost his self-confidence before this match. He only had one break ball in the last two matches, and he has no reason to be afraid of Raonic. He already defeated him once, and gave him a hard time the second time. Both matches ended in the third set, both were played last year. The Canadian started the last tournament with a win without a break ball in three sets. He was never a good starter, something like Isner, so he relies on his service in the beginning and slowly builds his game through the tournament. This is an ideal scenario for Sock to surprise us again, but I decided for over games because I believe nuances will decide. Details

So, a win for Čilić by five or more games. Marin ended up losing against Đoković with some conviction at Indian Wells, but he was quite impressive during the first 30 minutes. I believe him when he says that he's very confident ahead of this tournament. He covered this handicap against Robredo with an average performance. He learned to win routinely and his serve stops him from having so many fluctuations in his performances. Vasselin started the season better than expected, but his limitations are clear. In last four defeats, he failed to cover this spread and I doubt he will do so today. Čilić is the player with the most wins so far this season and matches like this are a routine for him now and he could go through this with one break in each set. In last 11 wins, he failed to cover this handicap on only 3 occasions and that was against great servers and far better players (Anderson, Tsonga, Isner). Details

This is the third time in a row that Mathieu got through the qualifiers, and each time he won a match in the main draw. I expect him to repeat that. He lost to Federer at Indian Wells, but was angered by his poor performance. Even so, he took a match serve from Federer, not a common occurrence for the Swiss. He no longer mentions private issues, instead he talks of how hard he is working to get back to his old position. His last three losses were against Top 10 players, so we've got nothing to hold against him. Karlović is in good shape, but we've seen him in better playing here, and he had no success. Miami never suited him, or any other player that likes to go forward for that matter. The Frenchman had some problems in the qualifiers, but he was best when it was most needed. Yesterday he did not lose his nerve after a big fumble, and that's a good forecast for this match. In other words, many factors point towards the Frenchman being the favorite for this match. These odds are to be 'blamed' on the ranking disparity and the good results by Karlović, but the reality is very different. The Croatian server did not do much here even against significantly weaker opponents. Details

I don't think Jaziri is a favorite. This surface favors players who stick to the base line. The Tunisian has a good forehand, but it's not easy to score a winner here. Gonzalez is a fighter. He did not have an ATP victory in his career up to Indian Wells, but in the three losses prior to that tournament he went over this game margin. The performance at Indian Wells must have boosted his confidence. He won two matches in comebacks, took a set from Đoković and had only one break point. The stakes are high for both of them, this is not their classic environment and I don't expect a one way match. Three sets are the most realistic option, but this margin can be crossed in two as well. Details

Yes, Nadal struggled in his first match and came close to losing the match but that's why we have -4.5 on him. He served poorly, he struggled against Stepanek's intelligent performance and Rafa didn't like it. Dolgopolov is a completely different story. These top spins don't suit him and the balls bounce really high here. The Ukrainian covered the spread only once in five matches, two weeks ago. Nadal lost his match serve then despite the fact that he won the serve games without a problem until then. So, it is more of an exception than a rule. They played here two years ago and they were 7 games apart. Stepanek had the game to handle Nadal. He was patient, he had the tactics and he used his volley very well. The Ukrainian will go for his usual game and it doesn't do well against Rafa. That's why I don't have any doubts this handicap will go through and I will go for it with a stronger stake. Form does not have an important role here as does style and Dolgopolov emphasized oce more that he can't play his attacking tennis with balls going so high. I don't know if there is a tournament with a higher bounce, if we disregard the high altitude ones. Details

There's not much to say here. Raonic played the first match for two and a half hours without a single break chance. Vasselin is no great server and he didn't have impressive stats but the Canadian did nothing on his return, as he admitted himself. He has returned to tennis only recently, he has no rhythm and he will focus on his serve. He will need more time to get into the rhythm, while Fall beat Janowicz, another great server. He cam back at 2-5 in the third set, he showed he plays better against huge favorites. I expect Raonic to struggle and probably win, but certainly not in a one-sided match. Details

Overrating Monfils or underrating Fognini, that's my comment on these odds. The Frenchman says he doesn't see himself as the favorite and I don't remember when he complimented someone out of Top 10 like that. Both are struggling on this tournament. Monfils hasn't had a win on IW since 2006 and this is Fognini's first time in the third round. Honestly, going for the winner here would be risky but I believe this won't be a one-sided match. Fognini falls asleep in a couple of games and then plays three fantastic ones. There is no impossible situation for him and no set that can't be made complicated. They played such a weird match in Umag last year when they tied the scored after 5-0. They had five sets at Roland Garros. Both play in surges, these are not ideal conditions for them but it's a huge match for both of them. Since we can expect the third set and both can squander a huge lead, the margin is really good for me so I will go for more games. Details

Thiem is gradually becoming a player who will soon be fighting for one of the Top 50 positions. He is smart about his carrier, he did a lot of challengers last year, used the invitations to play in ATP tournaments wisely, and he's not lacking confidence. He won three convincing matches here, dominated the serving, and played aggressively both ways. Truth be told, I really don't care what Simon says. If he said his two ribs were broken, I wouldn't play against him. He's a drama queen, but he will not have it easy here. He can win, but struggles a lot. Lorenzi had 5-1 in the third set last year, Paire and him played a 'million breaks' match, but he won both of them. His experience will probably prevail today, but I'm counting on some drama again. The Austrian has 'cojones', he won a set against Tsonga and Murray, and he's now Bursting with confidence. He reached the second round, thus ensure the position in Roland Garros and doesn't need to stress about anything. Best of all, even if Thiem doesn't played his best game, Simon can complicate things anyway. It often happened in this tournament, just like in his carrier on the whole. The more games option is therefore the best one, no matter which point of view you assume. Details

This is Raonic's first game after Australia. He canceled last three tournaments as he injured his ankle in Davis Cup and recovery took more time than expected. According to latest information, he has only recently started training with full intensity and that has to be felt here. Especially as his movement is still in doubt. The Canadian is a slow starter and Vasselin should be able to take advantage of that. Unfortunately, the odds for the Frenchman winning this one have dropped but I think this match will be feisty. Ranoic needs some time to get in the rhythm and Vasselin is not the type of player that would crush someone like him. I expect both players to focus on their serve and the Frenchman starting the match better, but I definitely don't see this as a one-way street. Details
